I 've tried to install Windows 7 on an external HD but I've got the attached error message. I have a mobo Q8200 Intel Core 2 Quad, bios settings: USB always enabled, boot sequence : 1-usb/2-dvd/3-hd(with Vista HP 64).
I'd like know if it's impossible or I'm in a mistake.
I don't know what is my problem because is not the first time that usb external hard drive is working fine until get damage and said " it need to be formatted " and lost all the INFO because I have to format again the disk to be usefull. Also it is not the same hard disk.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an WD Elements 1023 external hard drive which I want to connect to my laptop which runs a 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium. When I connect the device, it shows up in the device manager and the driver is installed properly.
However, it doesnt show up as a drive and in the Disk Management, it shows as Disk1 unknown. When I try to Initialize the disk, I get a error that the "The Media is write protected".
Its been a real pain as I have a lot of data init and unable to access it. [URL]

When I connect an external hard drive to the computer and try to transfer some files (in this case a Windows 7 SDK DVD iso), the external hard drive self ejects and the transfer gets interrupted. The very next second the hard drive comes back on. I have made sure that it is not the external hard drive at fault as the same issue occurs with my flash drive and also my friend's external hard drive (with different files.) I usually did not care and retry it, but recently I have been loosing files when the hard drive ejects itself and it has started to get annoying. Sometimes the file just dose not transfer no matter how many times I try. All that happens is the hard drive gets disconnected and connected again till I just let it be.

My computer still acknowledges it under drivers however, and it claims all the drivers are up to date and that the device is working properly. I tried going into to Disk Management to see if I could do anything from there, but it isn't even recognized there. There is however a Disk 1 but it is unknown and not initialized. I'm assuming this is my external HDD since its the only external disk I've used on my computer. When I tried to initialize it, it failed due to an I/O device error although the error prompt didn't refer to any specific problem.

The external drive is attached via through a hub, does it need to be attached directly? Is their a generic USB Mass Storage Device driver that I can load?
I was hoping that by creating the repair disk that all necessary drivers would have been loaded to the disk, but apparently not.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently backed up about 500gb of recent work onto an external drive so I could clean my PC inside and out. I gave it a clean install of windows 7 and when it comes time to get my work of my external, the drive cannot be recognized and requires a reformat.It was working perfectly fine and I surely did not format the drive into a RAW file system. I tried plugging into my laptop running win8 and still the very same issue. I plugged it into a mac running the lastest mac os 10 and I can browse all my folders and see the files but I can't move/copy or open them. But at least I know all is not lost.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI install Windows XP to external USB HDD and Windows 7 to other USB HDD. I have been using boot from ext. USB HDD for years because internal HDD is too small at that time and I keep it that way until recently I got problem.
I change from Dell620 to HP8560 and immediately it cannot boot from WinXP on USB. The only message is "A disk read error occured. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart". I try to install again without any error during the installation process, but same error once it boot from ext USB HDD. I still can boot Windows 7 on other ext. USB HDD. I upgrade it to Win8 Release Preview and work smoothly. When Win8 RP expired, I keep using it without upgrade because I usually use it for less than 2 hours. Suddenly it cannot boot again like WinXP on other USB HDD. "A disk read error occured." I cannot find anything wrong with USB HDD. I can still access all files on USB HDD from any system. I just cannot boot from it.
How can I know if this is hardware defect or recently Windows apply patch/update that make it cannot boot from USB anymore ?
The Remote Comms External Disk Access somehow showed up on my system and everytime I uninstall it I loose access to one of my external hard drives. If I revert to the restore point I created before the uninstall my external drive is back. When I go to the PLX directory in the Program Files (x86) there are no executeables. I am running Windows 7 64 at the latest level.
