Untill yesterday my homegroup was working just fine. Two laptops / home premium / windows 7.Now when I try to access it I am prompted for a Network user name and password, the same promt giving details of my domain. This is not my homegroup password, I know where and how to find / use it. I have renamed pc's tried setting up homegroup again etc etc. Incidently I cant change the share options on any of my folders now, they are all locked to 'Nobody'.Can anyone help as it appears to have support from Microsoft for their product I'll have to pay pardon my igronance but if I sold a product with constant updates I wont charge for the support.
I've always thought of networking as one of the black arts.
4 PCs - One Vista, 2 Windows 7 Home Premium, 1 Windows 7 Ultimate. All see each other. All have appropriate folders shared.
Try accessing A from B and I get "Enter Network Password (to connect to B)". I never set one up to start with, so why is it asking me for it. How do I access/change something I never set?
Try accessing B from A - I see the PC, and the folders I want but trying to access them results in "You do not have permissionto access folder names Contact your network administrator - who he? Obviously me but I don't know what the answer is!
Trying similar things with the other two PCs in the mix results in various permutations of the same problem.
I have tried all the various links suggested through Networking and Help, but most of the actions seem to be boxes to click to make the PCs try to sort themselves out. When it fails I can't find a manual way of trying to sort it out.
Any suitable tutorials that may help? Couldn't see any.
i have an USB External HDD and i wanted to protect it with a password, like everytime i plug it into a computer it asks me a password to see it's content. Do any of you know how to do this? I've been searching lots of software (like truecrypt etc) but those ones need to be installed on the machine, i don't want that.. i want a system like those USB PENS with U3. However, it doesnt show up as a drive and in the Disk Management, it shows as Disk1 unknown. When I try to Initialize the disk, I get a error that the "The Media is write protected".

Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 byte. Have a 1 tb external Seagate drive connected with USB 2. Disk capacity is showing 925GB. Have lost 75 GB. Is there a way to recover the the lost 75 GB?
I have been using a USB2 external drive for months now. Today when I plugged in the cable(into the same port as I always use), Windows 7 popped a "Installing drivers" notification. Why would this happen? - nothing has changed on the system. And how can I check that all is OK, with the disk still performing as a USB2 device?
I recently installed a program to allow my PC to read Mac formatted hard disks. However, it did not work and from then forward, my PC is unable to detect all other external hard disks, I've tried a few. The drives are not even showing on disk management. The lights on the hard disk do light up with I plug them in but nothing happens.
I have Windows 7 Professional 64Bit installed on a 250GB internal hard drive. I also have a 750 GB secondary drive installed in the system. When I connect an external hard drive to the computer and try to transfer some files (in this case a Windows 7 SDK DVD iso), the external hard drive self ejects and the transfer gets interrupted. The very next second the hard drive comes back on. I have made sure that it is not the external hard drive at fault as the same issue occurs with my flash drive and also my friend's external hard drive (with different files.) I usually did not care and retry it, but recently I have been loosing files when the hard drive ejects itself and it has started to get annoying. Sometimes the file just dose not transfer no matter how many times I try. All that happens is the hard drive gets disconnected and connected again till I just let it be.
Am unable to read or write in my hard disk.. every time it shows msg saying not accessible. i tried to format but even that is not happening. i tried using cmd prompt. but no use.
My external HDD (A WD 2TB My Book) just up and quit on me while I was using it today. My computer was no longer recognizing it, and I could no longer access my files. My computer still acknowledges it under drivers however, and it claims all the drivers are up to date and that the device is working properly. I tried going into to Disk Management to see if I could do anything from there, but it isn't even recognized there. There is however a Disk 1 but it is unknown and not initialized. I'm assuming this is my external HDD since its the only external disk I've used on my computer. When I tried to initialize it, it failed due to an I/O device error although the error prompt didn't refer to any specific problem.
I recently created a password and have regretfully forgotten it. I have no windows 7 disk and no other users on my laptop. I have not setup any password reset options i.e. system restore disk etc.
How can I restore my computer or just change my password?
