External Hard Drive Disappears And Reappears On Drives List?
Sep 6, 2012after searching for some answers on the forums, i've been moved to post a separate thread. i have an external hard drive that disappears for some seconds only to reappear again on my list of drives. my computer alerts as if the external drive were dismounting then remounting. i have run various checks and nothing is presenting as abnormal or of issue. has anybody else experience this, what effect is it having on my computer and what can be done about it

Jun 29, 2011I made a few months back a backup of my machine(windows 7 64bit edition). The size was like 25gb's so I saved it on my external hard-drive(I bought a case and put a hard drive(Seagate I think) in it). I know want to use this to restore my computer. So I made a system repair disk and loaded it up. However it cannot find my external hard-drive. I have "WindowsImageBackup " in my root directory of my external drive. Yet it still does not see it. I would install some drivers but I have no clue what drives I need as when I plug it into my computer and I am in windows 7 it finds my drive. What do I need to make window 7 recognize my image?

What I would like to do, if possible, is to use those Windows 7 restore discs and restore them to an external hard drive and be able to boot from it and run the original Windows 7 that came preinstalled. The reason I am wanting to do this, as there were some programs, drivers, and other things that I cannot download from Acer or retrieve from the restore discs, and can only access from the OS if it is actually running.

Aug 14, 2011I use a lot of different usb hard drives in my shop. I have two basic enclosures, a generic one that uses pata drives on a usb 2.0 cable and an Apricon USB SATA 2.0 adapter.Suddenly when I plug in a new drive device manager does see the drive and installs it in device manager. I can see the drive in Disk Management but it has no drive letter assigned, and therefore doesn't show up in Computer. I can easily just assign a letter in Disk Management and the drive immediately becomes usable. However, I would like to get Windows 7 to resume automatically assigning a drive letter.
I have tried a program called USB DriveCleanup. What it appears to have done is remove all installations of prior USB drives and when I plug in a drive that has been in the machine previously it then goes thru the install again. Yet still no drive letter. I think the program is doing what would manually be done by going into safe mode and cleaning out all the entries that build up there that don't appear in normal mode, then removes them. Basically it seems like a shortcut to manually doing it.
I also tried a registry fix that essentially asked me to delete the upper and lower filters. This seems similiar to fix for CD/DVD drives that no longer appear in Computer. This fix also didn't work.I tried removing and reinstalling the chipset drivers. Still no go.Running Windows 7 Pro SP1, H55 chipset.

May 22, 2010I have a 2nd hard drive and somewhat frequently it disappears from Windows explorer like it doesn't even exist. Then once I reboot the disk is back and perfectly fine and intact.I ran the Seagate tools against it and both the short test and long test passed just fine and it says that SMART has NOT been tripped.I did a lot of googling and found similar reports from others. But the things they suggest do not apply. For instance some reports are related to the driver disappearing after waking from sleep. In my case I can be actively using the drive and then it disappears. Also someone suggested disabling power management on the drive, but when I checked the drive is already set to Never power down.I am thinking that perhaps the SATA cable is buggy or not connected solidly. I'm going to open it up and try changing the cable. I really do think the drive is perfectly fine.

Nov 19, 2009I have Windows 7 Professional 64Bit installed on a 250GB internal hard drive. I also have a 750 GB secondary drive installed in the system. When I connect an external hard drive to the computer and try to transfer some files (in this case a Windows 7 SDK DVD iso), the external hard drive self ejects and the transfer gets interrupted. The very next second the hard drive comes back on. I have made sure that it is not the external hard drive at fault as the same issue occurs with my flash drive and also my friend's external hard drive (with different files.) I usually did not care and retry it, but recently I have been loosing files when the hard drive ejects itself and it has started to get annoying. Sometimes the file just dose not transfer no matter how many times I try. All that happens is the hard drive gets disconnected and connected again till I just let it be.
