When Backed-up Files To Ext HD, WinXP Decided To Use The WORTHLESS Windows 7 LDM Format?
Mar 20, 2012
Solution Needed: OLD machine was dying, bought a NEW WD 250GB HD, partitioned it into two 125GBs, installed it into an Ext Enclosure & SAVED ALL MY STUFF ... When I backed-up my files to ext HD, WinXP decided to use the WORTHLESS Windows_LDM format, which OF COURSE the new machine cannot see - recognize - acknowledge ... My APPLE sees it as a Windows_LDM Volume, but the G4 PPC MDD 10.4.11 can't do anything with it EITHER: I am NOT PLEASED: Where is the ANSWER FOR THIS?!?!Now running Win7 Ultimate (SP1)on a Compaq, AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 2.2GHz

My laptops stuck in a startup repair loop. Start up repair is unable to fix the problem and sends me to recovery manager. However, before I move on to getting my computer back under control (wich will be on another thread on another day)Theres tons of websites and stuff on there that id never ever find again if I lost them now. I used the file backup program in recovery manager to back up stuff like music, pictures, documents, and among other things, internet settings. What I want to do now is go into my flash drive and find where all my favorites are. I went to the only other computer in the house besides my hp, a mac, and plugged in my memory stick. What's in it is nothing I understand.ow Im sitting in front of the mac, typing out my situation on the sevenforums.com and just wishing there was a simple way to get my favorites up on the screen...Or at least understand enough of whats inside the memory stick to be able to extract them once my laptop is fixed.

I had to completely restore my laptop due to a virus. I have an HP and was able to back up my photos through HP recovery mode. However my three backup discs have tons of .wim files and I cannot open these. How do I convert them back to files that I can actually open and view? I am a newbie to computers but when it comes to converting .wim files- I have NO idea where to begin.

Ok, so my laptop pooed its pants and decided to break after numurous half successful attempts to fix it, as i had established it was a harddrive problem, i backed up my files onto 3 disks and system reset my laptop.I automatically backed them up, what i mean is i let the computer do it for me it scanned them and put them onto the disk and what not. So it got reset and i booted it back up did all the hoo haa and eventually got back to the main bit. it never explained to me how to re add all my backed up data and even though it recommends using disks whenever it mentions backing up data, when you look around the help pages all it talks about is internal backing up, so it gives you no clue of how to re-add all this data, which is very frustrating. It has all saved as .wim files, don't know why.

the storage disk in my server went bad (after 3 months!) and when I got the new one I copied everything over but some of the files aren't working right now.Specifically the video files that we stream over serviio. They look right, they're still the same size, if you go to properties it still shows them as .avi files, but they won't run.Is there someway that I can repair these files? I tried an .avi repair tool but it doesn't see the files as .avi.

I am having a serious issue as I built a new computer and installed Windows7 64bit Ultimate and can no longer access my Windows XP drive.I have been able to gain access to some files on the partition through the GRANT FULL ADMIN control app: Take and Grant Full Control Permissions and Ownership in Windows 7 or Vista Right Click Menu My Digital LifeHowever, I am still unable to access files from my external backup drive. The folder is "My Pictures" and has files from 4 years ago I would like to backup. This is the only folder on the drive I cannot access and the error I receive is:You require permission from "X" to make changes to this file.X=the user, I have changed this to administrator, everyone, my user name through:"Right Click" --> Properties-->Security-->Advanced-->OwnerWhen I then go to the main security tab the user has check marks under allow but they are all greyed out.

Started using robocopy to do my backups. In my command lines, i can specify directories on a external drive to backup to.Some directories show up and i see everything. My most important directory " my documents" DOESNT SHOW UP. I have confirmed a backup is occuring, via log file and properties on the backup folder. I edited it down to a backup of only that folder. Log file shows good, external drive shows the "backup" root directory and properties ( size, number of files) match log file. Open up the backup folder, NOTHING LISTED. I have to run the script as adminstrator , my user is admin also, but if i run it as myself, it cant access the folder. I think im dealing with a rights issue, i have edited security on the external drive, even reformatted it , still nothing shows up?

On Windows 7 Home Premium, I have three external HDD drives as well as the standard internal HDD, where the OS itself is installed. One of the externals is a WD MyBook, which reserves a partition as a system recovery disk for the MyBook. I never access that system recovery partition, which is assigned drive letter F:, and it's been fine for months. Now, suddenly Windows has decided it's a CD drive. When I boot the PC, an autoplay dialog comes up for this F: drive, asking to scan for and launch media files. In software like Power DVD, this F: drive is showing up as a removeable media source for files for Power DVD to play, and there seems to be some general conflict going on that I haven't quite pinned down yet -- for instance, if I'm playing a Blu-ray from my actual optical disk drive, and doing things with files on the G: drive, which is the actual data partition of this WD external HDD, sometimes the Blu-ray disc is suddenly and spontaneously ejected from the Blu-ray drive and the faux-CD drive tries to take over Power DVD and find files for it to play.I'm certain I don't have a virus or other malware. I've been through the system with my virus buster (Avira), with Malwarebytes, and with heavy-duty malware and rootkit detectors like Hitman Pro and TDSSKiller, and found nothing.I tried removing the two partitions of the WD drive completely from my Device Manager, rebooting the PC and letting them reinstall, but Windows just put the F: drive back as a CD drive.

I notice that one of my backup programs has selected all the folders in my User folder to be backed up. Among those selected is the hidden folder AppData, containing 8800 files. Since there are files in there that seem to change daily, it slows down the daily backup. I am wondering if there is really anything in there that I need to back up. I've read that some older versions of Outlook and sometimes Windows Live Mail put data in there, but in the past I've restored computers and I've never copied anything from AppData. It does not seem to be the stored emails, perhaps it is confuguration data? So my question is, can I remove AppData from my backup job and what might I be losing?

I installed a 3TB drive in my WindowsXP64 machine last year. I was having problems seeing all 3TB. I ended up using GPT for the drive and made a 2TB and 1TB partition and things were fine. I'm moving to a Windows7-64 machine now. To my dismay, when i moved the GPT drive into the new machine, Windows7 will not read it and immediately says "This Drive Must Be Formatted". This is driving me crazy because I was trying to avoid large copy sessions across the network (old computer to new computer) so I moved all my inportant stuff to this 3TB drive with plans to just physically transfer the drive. But now Win7 can't seem to read it. From everything i've read, it seems Windows7 should have no problem with GPT. Anybody have any idea what's going on and how to get around.

Well I used clonezilla to backup my c drive before I moved from Win 7 rc 7100 x64 to Win 7 Rtm x64 7600. Back up worked fine.
When I went to restore the c drive it failed. After numerous tries at restoring my c drive and d drive where erased.
I only have a back up saved of my c drive and would like to restore it using anything but clonezilla. Something very user friendly if possible.
Any recommendations and or guides would be great. Free or paid software.
Doesn't matter.

I got a new SSD drive so in installed it into my computer and unplugged my other 2 internal drivers one with Windows and the other with Files on it, so i installed windows 8 fine so i shut down and disconnected the SSD just to be safe and unplugged my other two back in so i can copy all my data off my Win 7 to my Files drive. So i copied all my data (600gb) to my other internal drive into a folder called [backup] so when i was done i shut down and unplugged my Win 7 drive booted into my win 8 drive and was going to copy all my data back over but the folder [backup] isnt on my other drive! its gone, but it says the space is still used up on the drive it used to have 1.7ishTB free now its only showing 900ish GB free but i cannot see any of those files. Im freaking out because its everything i own and cannot loose these. How can i get access to my files? I tried searching on the drive for the files because i know some names but nothing came up, i even made it show hidden files and everything. I tried booting back to my win 7 drive to see if they show up there but they are still now showing up either. I know when i restarted it and booted it asked to do a check disk on all my drives but i skipped it to make sure it didnt mess anything up but i just retried it on that drive with my files and it started saying "deleting index xxxxxx.file" scrolling really fast so i restarted really quick.

I was installing windows 7 on a mac. Complications arose and i just formatted the hard drive and installed windows. I just realized i left a few files on the mac side that I need. I know that you can recover stuff after deleting them as long as you dont overwrite the hard drive, the problem is, i partitioned it for windows. Can i still get those files back even tho i partitioned it?

I have an SATA drive with WinXP loaded. I decided to use a spare EIDE drive to load Windows 7. I have installed Windows 7 with no problems. I never see the Windows boot manager to choose which OS I want to load, but I can load either one by changing the boot order in BIOS. I can see the EIDE drive from XP, but not the SATA drive from Windows 7. How can I get the boot manager to work and let me choose which OS to load?

I want to do some partitioning of my hard drive and ideally would like to reclaim the space used by the recovery partition. If I copy my recovery partition (20GB) to an external HD or other media and restore it later if necessary will that work? Is there some hidden something I should know about that will come bite me in the a** if I do that?

I have a SSD with Windows 7 Home Premium x64. To boot off it my bios needs to be in AHCI mode. I also have Windows XP Prof SP2 x84 on a Sata2 drive and too boot off of that I need to be in IDE mode. Also when I boot into the XP drive it rewrites the boot BCD and I need to load up the Windows 7 install disk and do a repair to get back into Windows 7. While EasyBCD will allow me to fix that issue I can't imagine it will allow me to do the whole AHCI/IDE combo will it?

I recently upgraded from Windows XP 32-bit, to Windows 7 64-bit. Everything seemed to go smoothly, but now my DVD-ROM won't work. It won't even show up in my BIOS. My two SATA hard drives work fine, but not the ROM. I upgraded all my drivers, however, under the Device Manager, I still get an alert beside my RAID Controller. Could this be the issue? If so, how do I go about fixing it. I downloaded the drivers for my chipset already.

I looked up the previous threads and followed instructions. They worked for others but not for me. I tried the Fix It patches but still my problem is not fixed. Just today I noticed the following:My Op Sys was resurrected via an image that I had saved a month ago. If I try to uninstall any of the programs that came with the Image, I get error 1606. However, If I install a new program it will uninstall just fine.

It is sometimes required to convert a video or audio file to another format - for example if you want to use it in a Power Point slideshow where you need WAV audio files or you want to play a video downloaded from the internet for which you do not have the right codec. In those cases I suggest you use Format Factory. The program is very easy to use and you can convert in three simple steps.

Computer management -> Disk management -> attach VHD The VHD attaches fine, and it is the correct file. But when it attaches I get the message: "you need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" I clicked cancel, and then tried to right click -> explore. I then got the message: "F: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."Out of all the tutorials I have read, the file should open just fine and let me explore it. Why is it asking me to format the disk? And is it safe to do so?The file system is listed as "RAW" and the status is "Healthy(primary partition)"I don't want to lose everything on the system image! Can I/should I format the disk?
