Can Dual Boot With Windows 7 On An AHCI SSD And WinXP On An IDE SATA2
May 29, 2012
I have a SSD with Windows 7 Home Premium x64. To boot off it my bios needs to be in AHCI mode. I also have Windows XP Prof SP2 x84 on a Sata2 drive and too boot off of that I need to be in IDE mode. Also when I boot into the XP drive it rewrites the boot BCD and I need to load up the Windows 7 install disk and do a repair to get back into Windows 7. While EasyBCD will allow me to fix that issue I can't imagine it will allow me to do the whole AHCI/IDE combo will it?

I have an SATA drive with WinXP loaded. I decided to use a spare EIDE drive to load Windows 7. I have installed Windows 7 with no problems. I never see the Windows boot manager to choose which OS I want to load, but I can load either one by changing the boot order in BIOS. I can see the EIDE drive from XP, but not the SATA drive from Windows 7. How can I get the boot manager to work and let me choose which OS to load?

The motherboard died on my 3-year-old Compaq, so I just ordered a new computer that comes preloaded with Win7Home Prem x64. It was from Dell Outlet so I couldn't choose the OS. I've been using MCE (XP pro 32-bit) for several years and love it.I'm worried about program and hardware compatibility with Windows 7 x64. I don't use very graphics-heavy apps like CADD, Photoshop, etc. I only plan to do a little video editing with my .avi clips. I also have an older version of Replay AV that I use to record live streaming radio. I don't want to buy a new scanner (Canoscan LiDE 20 - no x64 drivers!) so here are my options:
A-Partition the new 1TB drive for dual boot setup with Windows 7 Home x64 / WinXP Pro (32-bit). I would buy the XP Pro OEM Branded DVD.
B-Install my old 200GB SATA Seagate Barracuda 7200 as a second drive and run XP programs and scanner from that.
C-Buy Win 7 Pro 32-bit OEM Branded discs, remove Windows 7 home x64, and do a complete new install with the new discs, and hope that my XP programs work with XP Mode. (new i5 processor supports virtualization)

I am running Windows 7 64bit. My printer only has 32 bit drivers. Is there any way I can get a windows 64 bit 32bit printer emulator? If not then I have to install 32bit Windows XP on my computer as well. Now after I partition my hard drive, will I be able to get that space back? For ex. I make a partition 50GB for windows XP, Will I be able to put that 50GB back into my windows 7 partition if I delete Windows XP?
Will the 2 partitions be able to communicate with each other? Like will I be able to take files from the partition that Windows XP is on if i'm logged on my Windows 7 and vice versa. Will I also need to install antivirus and things for Windows XP? One last question... I have 9MB unallocated(lol) How do i get that back into my hard drive?

I am running Windows 7 Version 7260 on a dual boot with Windows XP3. I can get internet/network access when operating under Windows xp3, yet if I shut down completely then re-start into Windows 7 I have no internet access.
However, if I start up in Windows XP then reboot into Windows 7, internet access is retained and available in Windows 7. All very curious.
Troubleshooters does not help claiming I have a missing cable connection.

I'm doing this because XP mode doesn't work in this computer. And i don't want to partition.

anyways, my main drive is a RAID 0 with Vista x64, but I have a second HD that is a SATA 250GB, which I installed Windows 7 on. The only way I could get install to work was to switch my BIOS to IDE mode rather than RAID. I would of course though, like to be able to access my Vista drive from Windows 7 (and more importantly, not have to switch between IDE/RAID mode at all in the BIOS, it's a pain).
Now, the one odd this about this all is that the drivers I have for Vista (x86/x64 drivers) for this mobo's RAID controller WORK when loaded on installation to identify and install to the drive, but seem to not load or not work in any way once the first reboot on install occurs. Maybe this is because I installed from within Vista x64, though.
(Incedentally, my motherboard is an M3A Asus, using ATI's SB600 for a RAID controller)
I've tried loading the drivers from within Windows 7 while in IDE mode, but the install program won't let me. At first it didn't allow because of version restrictions, but then I altered the ini file to get around that, but it encounters some sort of error when installing and quits.
Any help that can be offered, would be grateful. I realise it's a beta and not a real release, so I can get past the BSOD from my odd setup, and I really am enjoying playing around with it so far. Very very impressed.
Edit: Just in case anyone thinks of suggesting me to right-click the inf file and install that way, already tried, won't allow for it.

So I just bought myself a Crucial M4 SSD. And the guy at the store told me to make it run even faster to go into the BIOS and turn the HDDs to AHCI. So after installing Windows and playing around a bit I decided to go to the BIOS and do it. But then when the Windows sunburst comes up it crashes. What gives? I was reading somewhere else that there needs to be a registry change somewhere too?

i secure erased my SSD which was set to IDE, and re-installed windows 7 on the new AHCI setting instead. Now windows takes x2 (twice) as long to BOOT up, with the circle going round and round and round for about 30 seconds (instead of the previous 8-10 seconds in IDE.

I have 2 hard drives which are SATA2. There isn't any Slave or Master to configure. I have 2 partitions on each drive. So if I take the C drive and Image it and restore it to the 2nd hard drive 1st partition and re boot will I still boot into my 1st hard drive. If I take the 1st hard drive out will it boot into the 2nd hard drive 1st partition which will be the only hard drive on the system at this time and nothing has been configured with the hard drives? This is being done for a backup test.

Win 7 x64 Home Premium w/Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P, v.1.1 (P45), works great in IDE mode. (N.B.: eSATA port is just regular SATA port w/cable as provided by Gigabyte.) Trying to install external eSATA HDD. First I enabled AHCI drivers via registry. Then I turned on AHCI in BIOS. When I save BIOS and reboot, boot hangs when DVD writer performs sniffer boot, i.e., HDDs aren't found.

dual booting windows 7 home premium x64 with linux fedora 14 on dual independantly dedicated drives. i am a college student with moderate computer (windows) knowledge but am doing software development and would like to play around with some linux for a class. i have no prior experience with linux and have minimal knowledge of operation. i am currently running windows 7 and would like to keep it as my primary os. i do not wish to share media files across drives or os's, windows does that just fine as is and i dont want to get into a third drive. my current drive is a 1tb wd black caviar hdd. it is also currently 2/3rds full and the desktop is about 6 months old so i would rather not partition the drive for a dual boot. i would think that there are some other advantages for the os's operating independantly off their own drives other than if one hdd dies i should still have the other with its os still ok. i have read some topics about RAID configs with dual boot setups with dual drives like this but am not very familiar with RAID. is there a RAID config that would be beneficial in this situation? i currently do not have a RAID card. my tower internals are not very accessible and i dont like the idea of disconnecting drives depending on which os i want to operate.

I'm trying to do a startup repair of Windows 7 x64 on an SSD but can't boot from the CD-ROM while in AHCI mode. I have set CD-ROM at the top of the boot order in BIOS but this is just ignored and the computer boots from the SSD with the knackered version of W7x64. I read somewhere that when in AHCI mode, the BIOS boot order may include "CD-ROM" but it's not the real device anymore. I tried looking for the CD-ROM by its manufacturer name in the list under Hard Drives but it's not there either. So just how do I go about booting from the CD-ROM in AHCI mode? No problems booting if I set the BIOS back to IDE mode, install Windows 7 and then do the registry hack to install the AHCI drivers, but I'd like to be able to boot from the CD-ROM in AHCI mode.
P.S. I have a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H motherboard and am using the latest BIOS version (F9D)

My motherboard is a Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 Revision 1.3, my OS is Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, my HDD is a Seagate 1.5tb, and my SSD is an OCZ Agility 3 60gb.
So i was using Intel Smart Response technology with my SSD for SSD caching, everything was pretty much working fine. The other day i flashed my bios using @BIOS without properly disabling my smart response configuration, which i probably shouldn't have done and i won't do again. When i rebooted, Intel Rapid Storage technology was acting up and when i tried to open it, it said "IAStorUI.exe has stopped working". After that, i uninstalled the program and tried to re-install it, but during the install it said "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software." After a little research, i found out that it meant that my bios was set in IDE mode instead of ACHI mode. I am not sure what the mode was before i flashed my bios, but it was probably some sort of raid that it used for SSD caching. When i went into the bios and switched from IDE to AHCI, windows would blue screen after performing a few seconds of the boot logo. I switched back to IDE, and did some research to find out about the "Start" registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetservicesmsahci. I switched that from 3 to 0, and windows was able to boot into AHCI mode and automatically got drivers. Then, i tried re-installing Intel Rapid Storage technology. It was able to install, and i rebooted my computer. It blue screened again on the same part of the boot logo as before. I had to switch back to IDE mode to get it working again. Then, i got new chipset drivers from Intel's website, which didn't help. The registry that i changed is still set to zero, but it just won't successfully boot with AHCI like it did the first time i changed the registry. I am very stumped and i dont know what i could do to make it work like it did before i flashed my bios. My friend recommended that i should reinstall windows, but then i would have to go through the trouble of getting everything back and i think there should be some way of doing this without reinstalling the os.
The bottom line is that windows blue screens when the bios is in AHCI mode, even though i have the registry that should fix that and that did fix it on one boot set to zero.

my computer crashed last night and when I have tried to switch it on since it gives me the above message.I have tried entering setup by pressing F2 and changing the hard disk to be the primary boot device, but the same thing occurs.I have created a Windows 7 32-Bit recovery disk by downloading the iso file on my dad's pc and burning that to a dvd. I am able to load this, but when it first starts up it has a table supposed to list operating systems but it is blank and I cannor select anything. It says if my operating system isn't listed, "click load drivers and install drivers for your hard disks" but I don't know where on earth these are located and neither does google seem to.then working through the option on the menu:
-if I click start-up repair it tells me "startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically"
-if I click system restore I get an error message saying I must specify which windows installation to restore
-if I click system image recover it gives me an error message saying "windows cannot find a system image on this computer" and if I try to select one none appear.

A strange problem, nothing critical, but I found it annoying that my optical sata drives will not boot from a bootable disk when in AHCI mode in Bios. If I switch the drive mode to native IDE then I can boot just fine from either of the Opitcal Sata drives.I have done some searching and found this has been a problem out for some builds/MB in the past but you would think with a new MB and Sata controller and such this would no longer be a problem. If you look at my specs you will see the Gigabyte MB. The documentation is fuzzy on the sata ports. There is a setting to put SATA port 4/5 into some kind of IDE support mode. I currently have the slots 0 - 3, used for all the drives. 0 & 1 for HDD, and 2 & 3 for the optical drives, wondering if I use the 4/5 slots for the SATA and set the bios to the 4/5 ide support if this might solve my little problem.

As currently configured, XP is on drive C:, Win 7 was added to drive E:, and the system is currently run as a dual boot. Attempting to boot without the XP drive present will yield a "NTLDR is missing" error very early in the boot process.
I have already tried the following:
(1) I moved the hidden Windows Boot Manager files (bootmgr as well as the associated Boot folder) from the XP drive root to the Win 7 drive root.
(2) After physically removing the XP drive, I rebooted to the Win 7 installation DVD, and used the "Repair Your Computer" option to pull up the "Recovery Tools". Then, using the command prompt utility, ...
(3) I attempted to write a new boot sector to the Windows 7 disk using the command: Bootrec /fixboot, - that yields an error though. The Bootrec /fixmbr claimed success, but ultimately did not make Win 7 drive bootable.
I had to reconnect drive C: just to boot into Win 7 again to write this. I do have files backed up, but to format and reinstall files would take many hours beyond just the time to transfer 400 GB of data, since I have dozens of purchased applications that need to be freshly reinstalled and validated as well. Basically I want my E: drive now to be my boot drive while the C: drive is reformatted and used for general storage.
Any idea how to make my Win 7 drive bootable? Do I need a partition program that is more adept at creating a viable boot sector, or is that even the problem?

I installed opensuse 12.1 on dual boot along with my other windows 7 installation. Installation of opensuse is successful and i can use it. But when I tried to use windows 7 on grub, it says bootmgr is missing. I've already encountered this problem a long time ago so i tried to use bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /rebuildbcd and bootrec /fixboot in the recovery console in the windows 7 DVD. Rebuildbcd and fixboot did not work and it said something like it cannot find my windows installation. I also tried bootrec /scanos, it returned a windows installation on D:\Windows but my windows is in drive C. I think this has something to do with me messing up the active partition in disk management a month ago but i already fixed it by setting the active partition to the system reserved partition. Only fixmbr is successful, but now i can't boot on any OS because it says: Missing operating system.I also tried bcdboot C:\Windows but it failed with a message that goes like: Failure when attempting to copy boot information..

I can't get Win 7 to boot after setting up dual boot (Ubuntu 10.10) on my GF's laptop. I'll describe the problem and everything that has been tried so far. REALLY hoping somebody has an idea, I'm getting desperate.I installed Ubuntu last night via the Live CD. Used the Live version to install alongside Windows and partition the drive, install Grub, etc. At reboot, after POST it would just go to a black screen with a flashing cursor. I could only run off the live CD. A forum member determined the Grub was trying to load from the wrong partition. We changed that and voila! Grub now loads properly. I can boot into Ubunto via Grub with zero problems. HOWEVER: when I try to boot into Win 7 from Grub, it just locks at the same flashing cursor of death screen. The 7 partition is till intact, I can see and access all the files on the 7 partition from within Ubuntu, however 7 will not boot. I have tried downloading and burning the Win 7 repair disk and doing all of the following,Running the automatic Start Up Repair - several times. All it does is remove Grub, but booting still goes to the flashing cursor and I have to reinstall Grub again to be able to do anything after POST.I have used the command prompt to run "bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr". Has the same effect as above.I have used all the bootsec.exe /fixmbr, /fixboot, and /rebuildBCD commands. Again, all have the same effect and I have to reinstall Grub to get anywhere.I don't have an installation disk to try and just do a repair install because Asus apparently doesn't feel that I would need one of these. All I have is the recovery disks from the Asus AIRecovery application that want to just re-format the entire drive and start over. This isn't an option. It's my GF's laptop (mine gave up the ghost last week) and we both have WAY too much highly important data on here. Not to mention she would castrate me . Now from all my research the only other thing I've come across that sounds possible is that the boot flag needs to be set to a different partition. Somebody had a somewhat similar problem and it turned out the way Dell set up the system the boot flag had to be moved to a recovery partition and it worked fine. I'm wondering if Asus has something similar going on, but I can't figure out how to move the boot flag. I'm going on 12 straight hours of working on this now

I have a laptop I bought a year ago on which a created a dual boot Win 7 (32bit)/Win XP SP3 install, each on a separate partition. It was my first Win 7/XP dual boot install, and my first personal system that I allowed to have a Win 7 install on it at all, so although I have plenty of experience working on pretty much every previous version of Windows, I have very little experience with Win 7 and dual boot configs.
Today about 2 hours ago my audio spontaneously stopped worked for no good reason, so after shutting down each program to see if that cured it (which it didn't), I restarted the system. Out of the blue, for the first time I've ever experienced it, I received the msg "MBR Error 1" - Press any key to boot from floppy. I don't have a floppy of course on my laptop, and if I press any key I simply get the same msg. I turned the system off for a few minutes to make sure it was a good cold boot, but every time I still get the same msg. I tried switching the BIOS setting from IDE to AHCI (IDE is required for XP to boot, AHCI required for Win 7), but I still get the same error msg before I'm even prompted with the OS boot selection, so it made no difference of course.
I looked up this issue and found various suggestions, but none of the ones I found took into consideration a dual boot config., they were all Win 7 specific solutions. I don't what to try and repair the MBR only to have it screw up my dual boot config and be unable to access XP, which is what I use almost exclusively, nor do i want to lose access to Win 7 if at all possible.
I had a backup HD of my complete system that I saved several months ago when I upgraded my HD, and I periodically refresh the most important files on it, so I'm currently running on the laptop in question using my old HD, and it's working just fine. Worst case I can just clone my old HD to my newer HD that's screwed up, but I'll still lose a lot of changes I've made to the OS since I upgraded the HD and have to reinstall and config a number of programs, so that's my last option. I'll also have to back up about 200GB of data from the newer HD which is much larger than my old HD, and then restore it back after the clone, something that will take a lot of time and unncessary effort if I can just fix the MBR.

I had Win XP on 1 HDD & installed Win 7 on a different HDD. I think I accidentally did a dual boot install because Win 7 won't boot without the the XP disk connected to the motherboard.
That was fine until my XP drive died yesterday. Now Win 7 won't boot. The first time I tried to repair, Win 7 was not even seen. so I booted into diskpart and made the partition active. Now it could be seen as an OS.
Then I did a startup repair. It did whatever it does & when it was finished I restarted the pc but it didn't boot I went back to diskpart and confirmed the partition was active. I went back startup repair and tried again.
This time it said it could not detect a problem, but it still will not boot. What else can I do? My pc is homebuilt. Right now I have the 1 sata drive, 2.53 ghz cpu, 4gb ram, onboard video & sound
