View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently had a problem with Externalk HDD's. When I plug one into any of my three USB ports, it does not auto run, nor is it displayed if I click "computer" in the start menu. If I go to "my devices" however the HDD is there, I just can't access it. how to see it in "computer". This occurs regardless of which HDD I connect (I have tried three which all work on other laptops) and this has only just started happening, it was fine two weeks ago.
Incidentally I also have two pen drives which both work fine, are displayed ok and autorun works.
I would like to duel boot windows 7 and snow leopard + more in the future but I just want windows on my laptops hard drive. So What i'm asking is if I can partition my external hard drive to use around 100gb as mac and then the rest as storage? And how I would go about doing this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedThere are times when it is not being recognized by Windows 7(pro). It has three interface options (fire wire, esata, and USB). I have tried all three at one time or another, finally settling on the eSATA interface. When it IS recognized, it runs smoothly, with no hiccups. But when I try to shut down the PC, sometimes it hangs up on the shut down screen for a long time (more than 15 minutes at times) until I actually press the on/off button on the My Book. When I do this, my PC immediately shuts down, but then, if I start up my PC, Windows does not see it again. I then have to power the My Book back on, then power up the PC and hope that it is recognized again. Its not a big issue, because it is not frequently used, except for storing back-ups. Its just something that is a nuisance. Im not even sure that it is a Windows problem, because sometimes it is not detected in BIOS. why it is intermittently being detected and why it is hindering the shut-down process?

I am trying to format an external 80gb hdd in fat 32, and it keeps stopping saying "hdd too large" i have tried different ways with no joy
cannot access external HDDs connected via USB. The Device Manager shows a device. Under "Properties, Volume, polulate" it shows a zero capacity however. There is no letter (in "my computer") assigned to any drive I connect. Diskmanager does show it but as "not initialised". The attempt to initialise it returns "not ready".
PS: ALL HDDs do show in Kubuntu. So I'd exclude a hardware problem. HDDs are formatted in journalised ext3/4 as well as NTFS/FAT32. Should at least show FAT32/NTFS drives and partitions, shouldn't it?
I updated my windows last night. I get home today and try launching a program saved on my external HD. The program won't start because it says the program does not match my with my windows 7 64bit. I go into my external and notice that the program file (x64) now reads (x86). Strange, I think. So I then try to access the normal Program File, but it won't let me. Says it's corrupted and/or unreadable. Again, strange. I close the external and walk away. I come back to delete the program and reinstall, but when I go to open my external windows won't let me. It sees that it's there, but it lists it as having 0 used and 0 free space. Is there any way to gain access to the files inside? The movies, music, and programs on there I am not worried about losing. But I have a manuscript on there that I have yet to find saved somewhere else, along with some photos. I know, I know. I shouldn't have just saved the files there.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI often open content on my (Toshiba) portable hard drive from applications on the local hard drive. In WinXP, I didn't have any problems ejecting the portable drive once I was done and closed the application. ...To be clear, when I did get an "in use" error message, I would simply go into Task Manager and see what offending application processes were still running; once they were stopped, the drive ejected.
Now on Windows 7, the system will not let me properly eject the drive even though the Task Manager shows that I have no applications open on the computer. Each time I try, whether from the taskbar icon or the Devices window, it gives the message that the device cannot be ejected at this time because it's in use. As DaPiit said, this is really annoying because attaching and ejecting USB devices is something I do many times per day! The Windows 7 is not on my machine - I still run WinXP, and this more than anything else is making me REALLY consider finally switching to a Mac instead. (And I've been a Windows user for over 15 years...)
Is there some Windows process that needs to be stopped that I don't know about? I'm really reluctant to just "pull the plug" every time I need to remove the drive.
windows 7 does not recognize an external HD; I do not see it in "computers" but in "devices and printers". What should I do
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows 7 64 bit and when I connect an external HDD sometimes it shows and sometimes it doesnt. I work a lot with external HDD's plugged into one or all of my front USB ports and there doesnt seem to be any consistency to when it shows in the computer tree. Between this and autoplay not working it feels like Windows 7 has taken an enormous leap backwards.

I plug a HDD into an external USB and...nothing. Not listed in the computer "tree" when I go to administrative tools/Disk management it is not listed, and in the bottom tray there is no icon to safely eject the drive, as if it isnt even there. It is spinning though so I am afraid to unplug it lest I corrupt info on the drive.
I cannot connect any external HDDs to my PC. No ports (front or rear) works. Pen drives, Keyboard, Smart phones, Cameras etc works Not working in Windows 7, Ubuntu The Hdds are working in other PCs even ones with lower power supplies The HDD worked when I used a Y cable( 2 usb male ports). View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 100GB internal HDD. I have two external drives which are a 160GB, and a 2TB. I don't know what I'm doing to swap out the drives to give me a larger space. I don't have a screw driver, or tools either, and my PC is very small, so I would have a difficult time swapping out the drives. I don't know how to word my questions. Would it be possible to blank out my internal drive, and then use my external drive for what I would normally an internal for, but in this case it would be external? Or another way to look at is could I trick my external by thinking it's internal even though it's not? Or what are some other ways that I might be able to get that larger drive? I have to admit I'm not good at all with opening up my PC. I saw the inside when someone took off the cover, and where the drive goes it compact which is really small area to work, and tight.

(Just bought it from newegg.)
The drive letter will not show itself under my computer, so I cannot format quickly; which isn't terrible, because I plan to encrypt it with Truecrypt. But both Truecrypt and Easeus are only able to detect 2TB, not the full 3. I have even gone to cmd and ran diskscan, but that will only show 2TB. I understand that it's a whole disk size issue; but I've read that some people see two separate partitions, that equal 3, but I don't even get that.
[Update] I converted the new unallocated drive to GPT in disk management. Right click drive > convert to GPT Disk... it increased the drive from 2048GB to 2047.87GB.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have read through the forum, but I do not think that anyone has encountered the same problem that I have. I have a Yamaha RX-V2065 AV receiver that is connected wirelessly to my laptop, a Sony Vaio F series with 64 bit Windows 7 using the Intel Core I7 with 6GB RAM and 500 GB harddrive. This allows my home stereo system to play music via WMP.The problem is that the Yamaha can only read the music via WMP 12 that is stored on the internal hard drive of the laptop. The Yamaha cannot read any music stored on the external hard drive. WMP 12 has no problem accessing the music on both the internal and external hard drives - in other words, I can listen to music directly on the laptop with WMP 12 from the external hard drive. The obvious solution is to store everything on the internal drive, but this is not an option since this would use up all the storage on the laptop and would also be insufficient for all the music.Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? The network obviously works and the Yamaha can access WMP 12, but there seems to be some firewall between the Yamaha and the external hard drive.I know this setup works, because it worked about a month ago with my old computer which was an XP using WMP 11. Sadly, that computer is no more.I seem to be locked in to using WMP since that is what the Yamaha is set up for. I have not been able to find anything regarding this problem by searching via Yamaha. Also, I seem to be having the same problem as some others in that the final few seconds of songs are cut off. Has anyone found a solution yet? The laptop should have enough juice for this to not be a problem - 64 bit Windows 7, Intel Core I7, 6 GB RAM, and 500 GB hard drive. Again, as with the old XP using WMP 11, this was not a problem and that computer had less juice than this new laptop.

Elsewhere in this forum are similar complaints that tell me I must run the CHKDSK command as Administrator and get a command prompt that reads "C:Windowssystem32>" instead of "C:UsersAdministration>". Well by running the cmd.exe command as Administrator I finally got the recommended command prompt (the "elevated" command prompt some are calling it).
