Typical PC Home Desktop Estimated Power Usage?
Dec 15, 2012
Obviously there a many, many different home desktop configurations out there. From a top of the line latest desktop setup to one that's 6 or 7 years old but is there an accepted "average" electrical power usage for the "common' home desktop PC? How would one estimate/check an individual desktop PC's energy use (ie. cost per hour or day if left on 24hrs) without having to purchase any expensive watt-o-meter type unit ?

what is the typical number of processes that should be running in task manager on a typical standard version of Win 7 Home Premium, without any added programs? (Without IE being used)My Dad has a couple of year old HP Pavilion p6680t and it has about 62- 65 processes running before any browser is used. He also has Adobe Flash, Win Live Essentials, and MSE, along with a HP printer.

I've had Win7 for a few months now (thanks to MSDN Academic Alliance) but I've just recently started having this problem. I'm running Win7 Professional on my HP HDX16 laptop. My laptop basically runs flawless when plugged into AC power. When I unplug it, however, CPU usage skyrockets to 95%-100%. I managed to look at the task manager one time at noticed that it isn't necessarily one process that is crippling my computer; It's more like 4 or 5 programs that run around 20 CPU and the rest of the processor is used by various other programs. The process hogging programs vary sometimes, but it usually includes audiodg (audio device graph), mcshield (Mcafee), and a few other svchost (usually Win Defender, Win Firewall and AudioEndpointBuilder). I have the IDT HD audio card for those wondering (and all of the latest drivers from HP).

I have a system I am working on that no matter what I do svchost.exe keeps CPU usage on a Quad core hovering around 70-80% and temps in excess of 120F with a ThermalTake BlueOrd cooler installed. It is a custom system I built, with the following specs:
Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.1
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional , 64 bit
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) 9850 Quad-Core Processor, AMD64 Family 16 Model 2 Stepping 3
Processor Count: 4
RAM: 1791 Mb
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4200, 256 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 305142 MB, Free - 265597 MB;
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC., M4A785-M, Rev X.0x, 105424870002755
Antivirus: Microsoft Security Essentials, Updated and Enabled
Usage spikes when Outlook, IE8 and SKype are running after a random time period. I had this system on my bench for 2 weeks straight running benchmark tests and stress test software which all came back "PASS." I scanned for malware, virus, rootkits, etc. to no avail (all clean). Because of the extraordinarily high usage, USB drives are not working properly (take more than 2 hours to come up) and the system is sluggish. This should not be happening on a QuadCore system with a high-performance cooler. I even went so far as to format the HDD and perform a fresh install of everything. It worked perfectly for about 30-min then the BluRay drive stopped recognizing discs, CPU usage spiked up to 70%+ (two cores are at 94-97% usage all the time), and it won't pick up USB devices.

I rarely need to send/receive a FAX, but I would like to know how before I need to. In the past, I had a dialup FAX modem, but now I'm on cable, and I never thought about FAXing until just now. My printer also has a FAX function, but the only driver available for it on Windows 7 is the one that Windows 7/Windows Update installs. In the Windows FAX/Scan program, the scanner works perfectly, but When I try to creat a new FAX, it says that I need a FAX modem. I have no idea of whether my cable modem is capable of that or not, but when I select to send a FAX, a window appears stating that I need a fax modem or server, but when I select to use a local modem, an error appears saying that I need to contact the administrator (me). From the interface, the only thing that appears to be for setting this up is the Tools>Options menu, but when I click on that, nothing happens. The first question is whether it is typical for a cable modem to be able to handle a FAX or not?

I have an ASUS K53E with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. The issues I'm experiencing CPU usage sky rockets to 100% at start up. The only programs I have installed are Google Chrome and Audacity(a free audio editor(lightweight)). I purchased the computer less than 6 months ago. It also freezes constantly. I took it into Best Buy 2 weeks ago for tech support. They stated that the memory and hard drive are in working order through their testing. I have also ran tests and found the same thing. They stated that the issue is Windows 7 and they wanted $200 bucks to fix it, but they didn't tell me the specific problem.
-I've restore the computer to a repartition twice. Still froze.
-I've ran CCleaner and othe registry fixer-uppers. No go.

Why Windows 7 Home Premium ( on my laptop ) is taking up more space than the Ultimate version on my desktop? Both systems are installed, along with the application software, in the C partition of 30 GB with W7HP taking up nearly 4GB more then Ultimate. I have more applications, taking up more space, under Ultimate. Both systems have 2GB RAM, all System Restore points have been deleted, Hibernate is on and I have run both Disk Cleanup (as Administrator) and CCleaner to clear out any junk.

I am currently building a custom desktop (Specifications in My System Specs) and I've run into a few problems along the way:
- When I first put it all together and powered it up, the edge of the motherboard literally caught on fire for a second and I immeadiately turned the power off.
- I returned the motherboard and the psu and got both brand new again.
- I just tried to reinstall the motherboard and psu and now I get no power at all to the pc.
- I checked all connectors to make sure they were plugged in tightly and correctly. Everything looked fine. The 12V atx power connector and 24-pin connector were both plugged in correctly.
- I checked the psu with a paper clip and checked the voltage of each pin that should have been outputting voltage. Everything was fine there. And the psu powered up and the fans turned as soon as I pressed the switch.
- Checked for bad heads on the motherboard. None.
- I also went through all of these steps already: PERFORM THESE STEPS before posting about POST/boot/no video problems! - New-System-Build - Homebuilt-Systems

The operating system is 64 bit OEM. The computer is about nine months old (I got it at the end of June). I have not re-installed the operating system nor made any significant changes. Attached is the output from the "BSOD dump and system file collection" executable. I added the system health report to the same folder as the rest of the stuff, under the name "performanceanalysis.html". Let me know if you need any information that is absent from those files.
The BSOD usually occurs when the computer hibernates, restarts, or turns off. The computer will take an exceptionally long amount of time on the "turning off" screen, then the fan will start running loudly and the BSOD appears.

I have a Phillips desktop machine which up to a few weeks ago was running fine. 4 weeks back I was running a virus scan and left the machine alone only to return an hour later and find the machine off and the power cord at the back completely melted at the connector. After an initial panick I replaced the cord and the machine booted up again and ran absolutely fine.4 weeks have passed now and today I noticed a burning smell whilst the computer was on and I noticed the power cord was starting to seriously melt again.

I recently have been getting blue shutdown screens on my laptop. I will give you plenty of information about my computer. I put all the information about the Blue screen dump files and my System Information file in an attachment. I hope this helps. I recently found out you could save the System Information file as a text and also as an .exe. This is how it happens, I will be using my computer and then the computer will become very slow and unresponsive. It is not completely unresponsive but it will be so slow that I cannot use it, then after about 3 minutes of this slow unresponsiveness the blue screen will show up and say driver power state failure and shutdown. I recently formatted the computer because it had been doing this before so I restored it back to factory defaults about one month ago.

Is there a way to show the Power notification icon in the system tray on a desktop?
In "Turn system icons on or off", the drop-down menu beside Power is grayed out and set to off. After a google search, I found a registry tweak wherein I'm supposed to delete some registry keys that hide notification icons, but these registry keys don't exist.
Keep in mind that I'm on a desktop, which might be why it is disabled. I don't have a UPS so there is no battery to monitor, but I'd like to be able to switch power plans quickly. I might just have to stick with a desktop shortcut.

Desktop does not respond to mouse actions as previously nor the front panel power switch.I have to disconnect the power cord, reconnect, and press the front panel power button. Then the unit starts up and returns to window without the login window as if it was sleeping. The problem started after my attempts to install a defective external drive enclosure connected with an esata cable. I have since obtained a working external enclosure connected with an esata cable. The present Sleep wakeup malfunction is now present with or without a working external drive.

I'm using Win7 Professional at home and winxp at my office. I can connect fine from home to office but can't connect from my office to home. I have gone through all of the google searchs and all of the posts on this forum without any luck. I have checked that my modem has port 3389 forwarded. I have confirmed that it's listening on that port. I have checked all the firewall settings, and even turned off the firewall and still can't connect.

1) I want to move Win 7 Home Premium from my desktop to my netbook.
2) I want to put Win 7 Professional on my desktop, hopefully without having to start from scratch.
I know if I buy Win 7 Pro, I can do an in-place upgrade on my desktop, but then my CD key for Home Premium may not work when I go to put it on my netbook? What do you think?

I don't need VPN capabilities as I just want to be able to do this from inside the house. I've read through a bunch of threads here but haven't found what I was looking for. I can share files/folders just fine but can't seem to figure out how to share programs.

is it true the only Professional and Ultimate versions of Windows 7 can accept Remote Desktop Connection requests? I read on a post from 2009 that "any version of Windows 7 can act as a Remote Desktop client, but only Ultimate and Profession can host a Remote Desktop."I'm not sure I completely understand that - I do understand what host and client mean. However,d despite lots of different setting changes, I can't connect to this Windows machine using Remote Desktop.

I have a problem with my windows 7 home premium laptop..previously I was able to change my wallpaper but how come it doesn't seem like I can now? For an ordinary person to change the wallpaper they had to right click desktop, select "personalise", then go to "desktop background" and select one. Problem now is that it doesn't do anything when I click a new wallpaper or selct one and click save.
