Brand new to this group - trying to find out if I can connect my laptop to my desktop to make it easier when I'm working from home. I'd rather use my desktop monitor and keyboard but need to access the files/applications from my laptop. I don't want to have to unplug the monitor/keyboard each time I'm home to work.

I have gone through all of the google searchs and all of the posts on this forum without any luck. I have checked that my modem has port 3389 forwarded. I have confirmed that it's listening on that port. I have checked all the firewall settings, and even turned off the firewall and still can't connect.

I read on a post from 2009 that "any version of Windows 7 can act as a Remote Desktop client, but only Ultimate and Profession can host a Remote Desktop."I'm not sure I completely understand that - I do understand what host and client mean. However,d despite lots of different setting changes, I can't connect to this Windows machine using Remote Desktop.

Its running windows 7, and I tried all the repairs that it prompted me to try, but could not resolve the issue. I know it isn't a internet problem, because the desktop is working and an xbox that connect wirelessly with no problems. At school the laptop wont' connect either. I tried diagnosing my wireless hardware and connection everything passes except the ping test. What does that signify?

i've set the workgroup to be the same on both computers when i try to enter any of the computers (from the laptop to the PC or vice versa), i get the username / password screen there are no passwords on any of the users logged in to the windows and each system has only one user.
if i remember correctly, if both are on same workgroup, nothing else should be done in order to see shared folders.
I've got a Dell work laptop. It has McAfee Safeboot and other work related security things. I don't have many "privileges" on the machine. It connects to my work wifi network just fine (automatically) but I can't get it to connect to any wifi networks outside of work. If go to network settings and look at the wireless adapter and view available wifi networks, nothing comes up. It looks like the laptop has an alternative program that controls network adapter (Dell network adapter program) but it won't open when I double click it.

However now when i switch the laptop on, it does not connect to the wireless internet anymore. My network comes up in the wireless network connections box but as soon as i click on it it pops straight up and says windows was unable to connect to xxxxx etc.I have tried turning of router etc for 10 seconds and plugging it back in but nothing. i have checked my wireless adapter card for drivers and it says i have latest drivers.Everything else in the house, ie phones, playstation etc connects to the network fine, and when i hard wire my laptop to the router again it works fine (am using laptop now to type this)

I can ping websites and get a reply, but Internet Explorer just hangs and I get Not Responding in Task Manager. I have ran Malwarebytes, AVG, and Microsoft Security Essentials. I purchased a laptop last week with Windows 7 home premium. Currently have desktop wire to router with Windows 7 home premium as well. Everything hunky dorry in regards to internet connection. 2 days later, I've lost internet connection to both computers. Both say I'm connected to my network. I have other mobile devices that can connect to the router, so I don't think that's the issue. I read about disabling Home Group, which I did and that didn't help. I've got to think that there is a setting I just need to tweek, but have yet to come across something that works. The laptop does connect at my work to the WiFi so the network card is working properly. Both computers will connect to the internet if I bypass the router and connect ethernet cable directly from modem to computer.

From my desktop, I am able to add a network location in My Computer to connect to my laptop. However, on my laptop I am unable to connect to my desktop. The desktop shows up in the list of network locations on my laptop but it always times out trying to connect to it and just says there was a problem with the connection. know the problem is not with my laptop because I am able to connect to my other PC as a network location. I really need to be able to connect to my main desktop though.

I have a network of two vista Pc's connected to a router, no problems. But I can't get my new windows 7 laptop to join the network. The laptop connects to the router and internet fine, but can't see either PC. The PC can see the laptop sometimes, but can't access it - when I click to open get a 0x80070035 error. And once I change a combination of settings the PC can't see it anymore.
I have also tried connecting just to the router, turning off firewalls but that doesn't work either. File sharing is on, on all computers.
Unsure what to try next?
I've read through these forums and tried to do everything I could to make it work but I cannot seem to get it connected. My XP network is an existing network and I am trying to add a windows 7 64 home edition machine. I can ping back and forth between all of the computers using IP and comp name. I can connect to the windows 7 machine from my XP machines but my XP machines do not show up on my windows 7 machine. They all have the same workgroup name. There is no software or firewall blocking them. I have all of the services running that I found in these forums and set them to automatic. I set my IPv4 to NetBIOS over TCP/IP. I don't know what else to do to make this work.
