Show The Power Notification Icon In The System Tray On A Desktop?
Aug 14, 2010
Is there a way to show the Power notification icon in the system tray on a desktop?
In "Turn system icons on or off", the drop-down menu beside Power is grayed out and set to off. After a google search, I found a registry tweak wherein I'm supposed to delete some registry keys that hide notification icons, but these registry keys don't exist.
Keep in mind that I'm on a desktop, which might be why it is disabled. I don't have a UPS so there is no battery to monitor, but I'd like to be able to switch power plans quickly. I might just have to stick with a desktop shortcut.

In this tutorial, we'll take a look at the much improved Notification Area (or System Tray as it is commonly referred to). The Notification Area has become increasingly cluttered on many systems as more and more programs place their notification icons at the bottom of the screen. Windows 7 streamlines the Notification Area and significantly reduces clutter, as you'll see in this video.

I've been using Comodo for years, all throughout my XP years until I switched to Windows 7 a couple months ago, but have been getting frustrated with its frequent 100% cpu usage with Windows 7. I currently have the next-to-useless network icon in my tray at the moment, but is there some way to enable an icon for the firewall itself, and maybe shows up/down traffic (like Comodo would do)? I'm basically just looking to have some indicator that the firewall is running for peace of mind, maybe with a bit of functionality as well.

I have been noticing a strange problem with my Win 7 64bit. It does not happen every day, maybe once a week or so.
When I boot up the system and the desktop loads, I noticed that all (6 ) of my security (AVG, ZA, SpyBot etc.) program icons in the system tray notification area (next to the clock) don't load. (Program tray .exe files are not being loaded on start-up) I get the network, power, volume icons but nothing else. I should see 6 icons for my security and other start up programs I have loaded, but they don't show. I have to reboot the system three or four times before the tray icons will show. I also have to do a defrag to fix the problem as well. The system works fine otherwise. The security programs run fine when they are loaded, so they are not the problem.
Like I said, the problem of "missing system tray icons" only happens once a week or so. YES I DO have tray notification set to ON. (That is the first place I looked) So that is not the problem. I tried logging off and back on as administrator. Did not work.
Here is a copy of the event log when it last happened:
Log Name: Application
Source: Desktop Window Manager
Date: 8/16/2012 6:50:11 PM

I just bought a Dell notebook with Windows 7 installed. I had Vista installed in my other computer and so learning Windows 7 is a bit of a challenge. My current problem is, the desktop icon is missing from the (I think it is called) the systems tray. It's the "tray" at the bottom of the Window's screen. It was there when I first started Windows but soon after I noticed that it is missing. Is there any way to get the desktop icon back? It made it much easier to get to the desktop from another program.

I'm connected wirelessly with no connection issues, but the system tray icon is the one for a LAN connection with a red x on it and not the wireless icon. I noticed if I flip the switch to turn of the networking adapter it reverts to a wireless icon but of course with no connection.

I found this process in my system tray and I have no clue what it is. I didn't put it there, and I can't identify it in Task Manager's process list. It showed up as far as I know yesterday. I was told by my friend who is a computer person (works at a place) to run combofix, as well as MBAM, and I did.

Is there a way to hide a program that is running in the system tray, or possibly change the icon of the program in the system tray? I've tried changing the icon of the exe it self, and that did not work. Any other options/programs that allow this? I've tried a few programs to hide programs in system try, but none seem to work correctly on how I want. I want the program to still be running, but I dont want the icon showing up in the tray. I know that you can hide notification area through customizing the task bar, but thats not exactly what I want, unless I can change the icon of the program.

I can click on an icon in the system tray, and the pop-up appears correctly (for example, clicking on the volume icon, the volume control appears). However, as soon as I move the mouse pointer towards the pop-up, the pop-up vanishes.

I have a Netgear WN111 USB wireless adaptor on my PC (802.11n NIC). It works fine with my WiFi network, but it always displays the wrong icon in the System Tray when connected. It shows the signal bars greyed out, with a yellow star on top. I have tried a Windows update on the driver, but Windows (7 ultimate) says it's using the latest driver.
Netgear only have a Vista driver for this NIC, tried this to no avail, same problem. I have no other NICs enabled on the box (wired Ethernet port disabled in BIOS and nothing in Device Manager). I have googled this issue and I'm not alone (and it's not just Netgear NICs affected). However all the solutions say remove & re-install the device. Done this, and it's made no difference.

I have an HP Desktop computer and I cannot connect to the internet. The problem started with my mouse not working well then my keyboard so we replaced them (that was a month ago). Then strange thing started to happen, a ticking sound started to sound every few minutes. Apart from that, the computer seems well and functions properly. Then one day when I tried to turn it on, the screen looks different. I am referring to what I usually see on my screen whenever I turn it on. My pc is running on windows 7 but right now it looks like its on XP. Plus I cannot connect to the internet. The icon is no longer on the systems tray and when I tried to do the following:
System restore
Network troubleshooting
It wont allow me, when I do system restore it will say A volume shadow copy service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the application event log for more information (0x80042302).

Move Live Messenger Icon to the System Tray in Windows 7. If you've made the switch to Windows 7 and use Windows Live Messenger, you might have noticed the icon stays in the new Taskbar. If you are annoyed by this and would rather see it in the System Tray (notification area), just follow this simple process. Show Messenger Icon in Notification Area. When you close out or minimize Messenger it will reside in the new Taskbar. [URL]. To make it act like it did in previous versions of Windows, right-click on the Windows Live Messenger icon and go to Properties.
In the example above I created an icon on the desktop but you can also do the same thing with the icon in the start menu. Then go to the Compatibility tab and run it in Windows Vista compatibility mode. The icon might be hidden in the notification area though. You just need to customize the Notification Area Icons and have it Show icon and notifications. [URL]. Thats it! Now you have your Messenger icon back where it used to be. [URL].

If i click on look in folder containing it is there. If I delete it and restore it will then show up on my desktop. I can drag things out on to the desktop and they will show up. It seems that only things I download to the desktop do not show up.

I created the "showdesktop.scf" file on the desktop, but I can't seem to get it to pin to the taskbar it will pin to everything else: the start menu, windows explorer, my grandpa's beard but how can I get it to just sit there on the taskbar?

I've already added a Show desktop button in Quick Launch toolbar near the Start button, I don't wanna keep both of Show desktop buttons in left and right, thus wanna remove the right one newly introduced in Windows 7.
Is there any methods to do or workaround?
I know change the theme to other than Classic will not show you the button, However I like Classic theme so that won't change theme to others.

My friend had an issue where he recently installed a program, and then went on to uninstall it. He cleaned out all the registry issues and leftover files. However, in his notification tray (Windows 7 Professional), the app icon remains. Not in the actual notification tray, given that the app never does anything. When he goes to the little arrow, and then hits "Customize", the app shows up. Is there any way to get rid of it manually? He's already reinstalled/re-uninstalled the program. Didn't work.

I don't remember the exact date, but before, whenever I startup my laptop, I always have the Dolby notification icon in the bottom right. But now, I don't know what I did, the notification icon never appears for Dolby. The settings for that icon is set to "Show" but whenever I click on it again, it says "This notification is currently not active" Eventhough, I'm pretty sure it's on.I tried reinstalling, but I keep getting error messages once it's reinstalled. So I have to use System Restore, and this has been driving me nuts...and this keeps going in circles.I think there is something wrong with the registry of this program. When I go to the program location, I have a Dolby Profile Selector, Dolby Profile Editor, and Dolby Profile Launcher...I am so confused now, as I always had the Notification Icon available.I can add Dolby to the Startup Folder, but when turning on the laptop, the entire Dolby profile pops up when Windows 7 boots, and that was not what happened before?
