Turning Off Monitor Disables USB Wifi?
Feb 26, 2011
I have a desktop PC running W7x64 for which I rely on my Alfa AWUS036H wireless USB adapter for an internet connection.
Windows 7 has a feature that seems to detect whether I turn off my monitor or not (for one reason, I know this because it makes a noise when I turn it on or off). When I turn my monitor off, my internet is disabled for some reason. I would like it to stay enabled so that I can download files and keep other active connections while the monitor is switched off.
I can verify that the indicator light on the USB adapter turns off when the monitor turns off and that the wireless utility that controls the device senses no device is present (i can see this using my secondary monitor, behavior only occurs when primary monitor is turned off).
Does anyone know how to disable this from happening? I have tried both turning off "Selective USB Suspend" and unchecking the "Allow computer to turn this device off" in the properties of the wireless adapter in device manager.

Just installed 7100 and was setting up. I have a Toshiba HDTV on DVI (display numbered 1) and an Acer lcd on VGA (labeled 2). The acer is set as the primary display and all appears fine but when I'm not using the hdtv I'd like to turn it off and just use the lcd. When I turn off the hdtv I hear the sound for disconnecting hardware and the signal is cut off from the lcd putting it to sleep.
I tried the latest nvidia drivers (oh yeah, 8600GT) and it made the system super crashy with bsod's and everything. Can I disable plug and play, which I suspect is the problem, on just that monitor?

Starting last night my Dlink DWA-130 is causing all of my rear usb ports to not work. If I plug it into the front the computer doesn't even recognize it. I have tried using different ports on the back with the same result. I have even reinstalled Windows and the problem is still there.
Not Sure if this helps but...

I'm running Windows 7 on a Compaq Presario CQ56.I've been having trouble with the multiple display settings changing on their own on my laptop. I've never had an external monitor hooked into my laptop, but for the past week or so my laptop will give me a notification that an external monitor has been plugged in, then it will disable though nothing has been change. I havan't downloaded anything recently besides windows updates.

I've been having this problem ever since I installed Windows 7. I was previously and XP user and had no probs with it until I installed Windows 7.
Basically when I turn my monitor off and turn it on again, my PC restarts itself. It doesn't matter how long I turn the monitor off for - As long as I hit the off button on my monitor while my PC is still running, the moment I turn on the monitor, the PC makes a beep and restarts.

My screen saver will not come on and the monitor is not turning off, even though I've set it using the advanced power settings. Also, when I put the computer into Hibernate mode, it always turns itself back on, usually in the middle of the night.

my monitor won't turn on after it turns off automactially (I set this to 5 minutes in windows). I've disabled sleep mode and all that jazz. I suspect it might be an ssd problem because when it won't turn on there is minimal activity with the hard disc LED light.I've also disabled sleep, hybrid sleep and the page file thingie. I just want it to turn off my monitor, not put my computer to sleep[CODE]

Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) keeps turning the monitor off after 15 Mins of in-activity.However - before it does that at 14 Mins and 30 Seconds it sorta does a quick flash - then at exactlly 15 mins does the turning off.All the power options are set to Never. (I have even created my own power plan for this)I have never had this problem on this PC before - this is a new install - and since then it has been doing this.

I am going to preface this by saying that this has *nothing* to do with restoring from sleep or hibernate modes. In searching for an answer to this issue, I found way too much related to that.
My problem is simple. Occasionally (~50% of the time) when I turn the monitor back on after shutting it off, it will stay blank and not really turn back on. It makes no difference how long the monitor has been off. After turning it back on, the power light is green, indicating there is a signal, but the screen is black.
Again, the computer has not slept or hibernated. I simply shut off the monitor and later come back to turn it on. The same thing will happen occasionally if Windows shuts the monitor off after the configured time. (I did that last part as a test; I typically do not automatically shut it off.)
Specs:
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i7 860
MB: Asus P7P55D
Memory: 8GB - Corsair CMX6GX3M2A1600C9 (2 x 2 x 2GB)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
Monitor: Chimei CMV 221D
NVIDIA Drivers: 8.17.11.9562 (11/20/2009)
I originally thought it was the OS that was hung. However, I was able to go into the start menu and restart ("Start" -> "Right" -> "Right" -> "R"), so I know the OS was there responding to my commands.
Attempts to fix:
- Restart the computer. This worked.
- Shut off the power to the monitor and turn it back on. This works most of the time.
- Lock and unlock Windows. This works after a few tries.
- Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL followed by ESC. This works after a few tries.
So, I have a fairly simple work around now. So this is only a minor annoyance. Hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL then ESC does seem to work. I don't think it is a placebo because I waited 5 minutes and it did not come back, but after 2 cycles of that, it came back. I think that fixes it because it causes full screen refreshes.
Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone seen this before? The drivers are recent, but I noticed this with the clean-install Windows 7 drivers for this card as well. This is a very clean and very recent install (3 days). I never had this problem with Vista 32-bit, the same graphics card, recent drivers, but different CPU/motherboard/memory.

when my computer goes to sleep after it's on for a while when I move the mouse to get the screen back up it shows the backround no icons or anything to click. Same if I turn it off and turn it back on. I have to turn it off and on many times then go to safe mode and shut down then turn it on again for it to work. Just now I had to turn it on/off 4 times for it to show the icons and task bar. Usually it is left blank with nothing to click having no choice but to turn it off. Norton says no viruses. My computer is HP with windows 7. I bought it in 2011.

I have a bit of a weird problem; here's the whole story. For the sake of an easier explanation, let us call the PC's I have mentioned PC-A, PC-B and PC-C. So, I first had PC-A and PC-B installed (this was years ago), and the problem first started appearing right away; whenever I tried to transfer a file between the two PC's, that's size exceeded roughly 1 MB, PC-B shut down all connections (which means it lost LAN connectivity, and could therefore not connect to the internet (as the broadband is connected via LAN to the switch)). At first, I didn't think much of this, as the problem is easily avoidable by transferring files using a USB stick instead (Note that smaller files can still be sent without any problem, and the PC's even perform well in Games, when playing LAN). However, I decided to get a third PC (PC-C) up and running recently, and have correctly (as far as I can tell) installed the PC upstairs on a different switch, connected to the LAN and internet as well. However, now the problem has became a bit of a greater nuisance, as whenever I try to send files from PC-A to PC-C, PC-B locks itself down again (my guess is that this happens because the traffic is still being applied to the PC-A-to-PC-B switch, which then leads me to conclude that the problem is in the switch).
I have so far tried changing switches, changing the jack that PC-B is connected to in the switch, changing various options in the Network Adapter settings of PC-B and disconnecting and reconnecting PC-B to the network(both physically, by plugging the cable out and back in, and via the software, by enabling the LAN connection that PC-B is usually connected to as it disables itself after a while (it gets stuck on Enabling... when I try and do this)), and so far the only way to get PC-B's networking working again, is by rebooting the PC itself. Please also note, that I am able to ping between all PC's before the file transfer, that the other two PC's do NOT need to reboot in order for their network to still function properly, that only files of a filesize of over ~1 MB cause this malfunction, that sometimes (I have yet to see a pattern of this occurring) PC-B CAN ping the other PC's but has a 50% packet loss average, and takes about 3k ms to get a single response, while the regular ping speed is <1 ms, and that transferring files over wireless networks (from PC-A to a laptop connected to the switch or broadband) does not seem to trigger this problem

[code] Lately my DirectX 11 disables itself. I have to reboot to fix it. The last time it happened Aero was still working. I turned off Aero and turned it on again and it doesn't work. In dxdiag, DirectDraw, Direct3D, and Texture all are disabled. DDI Version also shows as Unknown. I restarted and all is fine. I have had Windows 7 for about a month now and this has only happened the past 1-2 weeks. My ATI drivers are from Asus and are 8.703.Is there any other information I should look for and post?

SPDIF used to work flawlessly with WMC7 and Intel G620 integrated graphics. I only needed to set the SPDIF as default in the Via HD panel.Since installing an HD 6450 video card I have to re-select this option everyday, or more if the HTPC stays in sleep mode for a long time. In fact the HTPC is always on & just goes to sleep when not used. The other day I found an SPDIF setting in Control Panel > Sound and made it the default, but that made no difference.

I use a screen magnifier/reader,it doesn't allw aero to function because it uses the graphics card,a known mirrored driver issue, not fixable at this time.So I would like to either disable aero altogether so I can use a black theme,or use the built in windows7 basic theme but with black instead of the default colour.
I know I can shut off aero peak and aero shake but how do I shut all of aero off, other than using the Windows 7 basic theme, and that is why I asked about changing the colour in the basic theme.I hope that makes sense.

I have been running happily with an All in One Medion desk top, which I have modified slightly. It is really a notebook chip based system, only two sata outputs, but it does have a touchscreen and digital tuner. It is a 2.3Ghz Pentium dual core. 4 GB mem and 1.5 TB over two drives.
I pulled the DVD drive out of sata 2 port and fitted it in an external housing on a USB port. Then I wired the sata 2 port out via an eSata socket to a sata HDD docking station.
I have been running six months with two versions of Win 7 Home premium 64bit in dual boot mode with no probs. Last week I decided to replace the 64 bit with a 32 bit version so as to run some older programs.
So I formatted the external 1TB drive and loaded win 7 32x from the original disks. Took while with all the updates and SP1.
While doing this, I had no problem with the DVD drive but, as soon as I was up and running, the DVD drive stopped reading disks. Swap boot back into Windows 7 64 bit and it is fine, boot from Windows 7 32 bit and it is a dodo. It recognises the drive ID but will not open a file or boot from a bootable disk. I have checked for out of date or missing drivers but nothing shows.
I suspect I have a protocol problem, Not sure. It appears to be using a new Windows 7 sp1 driver. Or maybe something wrong in Global settings.

So I've had sudden trouble with my webcam in the last two days, which is kind of irritating because I rely on it a lot. Specifically, when I try to activate my webcam, Windows disables the USB controller its connected to, reporting "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43.)" I've tried the webcam on another computer and had no problems. Disabling/reenabling doesn't do anything, neither does using a different USB port. I've tried the other solutions I've found online, including running the Hardware troubshooter, taking the battery out of my laptop, and unplugging the power for a couple of hours. I've removed the USB controllers, and restarted my computer.

I'm having a bit of a conundrum. My Toshiba touchpad has developed a bad habit of disabling itself at random. The device is listed as a Synaptics Touchpad V7.2.I'll be typing along, or moving the mouse, or just doing nothing at all (waiting for a download to finish, for instance) and the mouse will become suddenly disabled. The only way to get it back is by pressing FN+F9 or sometimes to press the enable/disable button immediately above the mouse. I know I'm not pressing either of these by accident when the mouse turns off. When this happened, I took it as a sign that it was time to reformat the hard drive and start fresh. Even during the Windows installation, the mouse continually disabled itself. After installing the Toshiba Value Added Package and the Synaptics driver, the only change is that now I can see a big icon in the center of the screen alert me when the state of the mouse switches from enabled to disabled.
I'm noticing now too that it's not just disabling itself. If I don't re-enable the mouse right away, it will renable itself after a few moments. This can happen as much as once every few seconds and makes getting any real work done impossible.

I just got a new laptop (Lenovo G770) and am busy configuring Windows on it. I am running into an annoying issue with my input devices. Whenever I type or do anything with my keyboard, it disables my touchpad for about half a second. Since I am an avid user of keyboard shortcuts, this is highly annoying and is messing with my productivity. I can't figure out how to turn it off--when I search for answers I just see lots of threads from people having the opposite problem, who want to disable their touch pad while typing. I currently have the Synaptic driver installed controlling my touch pad, and I can't see any options in its settings to disable this "feature".

I have a my HTPC plugged into a 5-port switch along with my Xbox 360, PS3, and U-Verse TV box. Naturally, all 5 ports are being used with line 1 going into my router. There are 3 other computers in my house plugged directly into my router. My problem is that my network ceases to work whenever I plug in the switch. I am neither able to access the internet or view any other computer on my network for file/printer sharing. Running ipconfig shows that I have no LAN/internet connection. If I unplug the switch and plug in the components individually, then everything works normally.I have tried 3 different switches but I am getting the same result. It is very inconvenient to have to manually unplug and plug in my various game consoles and TV box in order to enable them to access the internet.

When running Kubuntu in Sun VirtualBox it disables Windows audio devices. Only way to re-enable audio seems to be reboot. When running Ubuntu, it's OK. No problems with Windows devices. Both Kubuntu and Ubuntu v. 9.04.
I like KDE more than Gnome, that's the reason for Kubuntu.
Any ideas?

I will preface all this with I am not particularly knowledgeable regarding computer stuff, but am willing to learn!OK I've been having a problem, similar to some other posts, where Windows Explorer (not internet explorer) seems to spontaneously stop responding. When it does, I can restart windows explorer and it always says "windows is checking for a solution" but never finds anything. Whenever this happens, which can be as often as every 5 minutes, it inexplicably disables my wireless adapter (belkin wireless g usb) which occasionally decides to not respond and not turn back on

I have recently been granted admin rights on my work computer. While the computer was locked down, the Aero visual effects were set to "adjust for best performance".I can change it to "adjust for best appearance" and the Aero effects appear - until I reboot the computer. After the reboot, the checkbox is still set to "adjust for best appearance" however, the effects are disabled. I have to change the setting, change it back to best appearance and hit OK. Then everything works again. The friend in IT who granted the admin rights told me that this is due to the group policy our company has set up - and that there is nothing he can do about it.I have checked gpedit and regedit but could not find any relevant entries.Do you have any idea how I could automagically adjust the settings back to best appearance after every reboot? I was thinking that if I cannot turn of the group policy myself, then maybe I could write some sort of script that changes to appearance settings for me (instead of me having to do it manually every time).

I have an Echo MiaMIDI sound card for recordings, when i first installed it i had to disable my motherboards onboard sound through my bios before windows would use it. This has been fine for 2+ years.
Windows 7 (64 bit home premium) has suddenly started installing the "HD Audio Device Drivers". I dont understand this since I have all windows updates turned off. But when it installs these audio drivers it disables my Echo MiaMIDI card.
So i go to device manager and it shows the Echo card but says there is not enough resources to use it due to other drivers being used, and it lists the HD Audio Device being in use. So i uninstall it but moments after this Windows starts installing it again. It still says disabled in my bios. its driving me crazy because i cant use my sound card!
