Oct 28, 2010

When I set the power management to turn off the monitor after x minutes, the monitor is off for 1 second and it turned on automatically. I am using msi ex600 laptop.

I have tried the following:
* Unplugged the mouse
* Exit from all application's running
* Disable the network card

My bios and graphic card are updated. The hibernate option is working fine. Is there a way to find what turns on the monitor?

Power Setting Keeps Resetting Monitor Off To 20 Minutes After Restart?

Apr 13, 2011

I have made sure that the power settings in control panel have been set to "never" under advanced settings. About 4 months ago, windows decided to set my monitor shut off time to 20 minutes. The first time it happened, I figured it was a one-off thing, and set the monitor off setting back to "never". Fast forward 4 months, and I have to turn the setting to "never" every time I start my computer. I've even made custom power profiles, and every time I restart, the monitor off setting keeps going back to 20 minutes.

Turning USB Socket Power Off And On?

Nov 25, 2012

In theory powered USB sockets (maybe USB2 and later) can control the power if the hardware supports it.

I don't know if my H/W supports this function, but that's a mute point as I've never found any S/W that implements such control. Has Windows7 made any advance over XP in this arena?

This issue comes up once a year, at about this time, as I have USB powered desk Christmas Tree. OK, it has a switch on the bottom, but I'd really like to be able to control it with an application if possible. The tree sits on my windowsill, and it's not easy to reach over my monitors. And yes, if this is the worst of my problems, I'm obviously doing OK.

Basically when I turn my monitor off and turn it on again, my PC restarts itself. It doesn't matter how long I turn the monitor off for - As long as I hit the off button on my monitor while my PC is still running, the moment I turn on the monitor, the PC makes a beep and restarts.

Turning Off Monitor Disables USB Wifi?

Feb 26, 2011

I have a desktop PC running W7x64 for which I rely on my Alfa AWUS036H wireless USB adapter for an internet connection.

Windows 7 has a feature that seems to detect whether I turn off my monitor or not (for one reason, I know this because it makes a noise when I turn it on or off). When I turn my monitor off, my internet is disabled for some reason. I would like it to stay enabled so that I can download files and keep other active connections while the monitor is switched off.

I can verify that the indicator light on the USB adapter turns off when the monitor turns off and that the wireless utility that controls the device senses no device is present (i can see this using my secondary monitor, behavior only occurs when primary monitor is turned off).

Does anyone know how to disable this from happening? I have tried both turning off "Selective USB Suspend" and unchecking the "Allow computer to turn this device off" in the properties of the wireless adapter in device manager.

Power Saving Options Are Being Ignored

Sep 15, 2011

My computer will not go into sleep mode, turn off the hard disk, or even go to a screen saver. I manually put it to sleep and it ethier wakes right back up or it waits 5 minutes and comes right back on. I dont have any programs running that should affect it sleeping. I went into the bios and made sure all the wake-up-on settings were off. I tried different power options and settings, and nothing is working. I never had an issue before, the change being that I have a new motherboard and reinstalled windows 7 on a SSD

Monitor Stays Blank When Turning It Back On

Dec 16, 2009

I am going to preface this by saying that this has *nothing* to do with restoring from sleep or hibernate modes. In searching for an answer to this issue, I found way too much related to that.

My problem is simple. Occasionally (~50% of the time) when I turn the monitor back on after shutting it off, it will stay blank and not really turn back on. It makes no difference how long the monitor has been off. After turning it back on, the power light is green, indicating there is a signal, but the screen is black.

Again, the computer has not slept or hibernated. I simply shut off the monitor and later come back to turn it on. The same thing will happen occasionally if Windows shuts the monitor off after the configured time. (I did that last part as a test; I typically do not automatically shut it off.)

Specs:

OS: Windows 7 64-bit

CPU: Intel Core i7 860

MB: Asus P7P55D

Memory: 8GB - Corsair CMX6GX3M2A1600C9 (2 x 2 x 2GB)

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB

Monitor: Chimei CMV 221D

NVIDIA Drivers: 8.17.11.9562 (11/20/2009)

I originally thought it was the OS that was hung. However, I was able to go into the start menu and restart ("Start" -> "Right" -> "Right" -> "R"), so I know the OS was there responding to my commands.

Attempts to fix:

- Restart the computer. This worked.

- Shut off the power to the monitor and turn it back on. This works most of the time.

- Lock and unlock Windows. This works after a few tries.

- Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL followed by ESC. This works after a few tries.

So, I have a fairly simple work around now. So this is only a minor annoyance. Hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL then ESC does seem to work. I don't think it is a placebo because I waited 5 minutes and it did not come back, but after 2 cycles of that, it came back. I think that fixes it because it causes full screen refreshes.

Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone seen this before? The drivers are recent, but I noticed this with the clean-install Windows 7 drivers for this card as well. This is a very clean and very recent install (3 days). I never had this problem with Vista 32-bit, the same graphics card, recent drivers, but different CPU/motherboard/memory.

Lock PC By Power Options Not Screensaver?

I am unable to lock my PC via power options. Although I have set it as to lock PC, it is impossible to do it as per Windows XP.The only way to lock it is through the screensaver, but this is not an option for me as I work 10 hours at an office and I prefer the blank screensaver to start in one minute and to turn off the display after 10 minutes. That's when I want the PC to be locked, i.e. after 10 minutes and not after on minute after screensaver starts.

Hybrid Sleep/Hibernate Not Available In Power Options?

May 4, 2012

Just upgrade my server with a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H mobo and a G630T processor. Installed Windows 7 Ultimate. For some reason I don't see the options for hybrid sleep or hibernate in advanced power options menu. Generally, I believe they are supposed to be under sleep in the advanced menu but only "Sleep After" and "Allow wake timers" are present in the menu. I haven't upgraded to a new mobo in years and in my old mobo there was an option to enable S3 sleep. This mobo has options to enable wake timer, WOL, and a couple of others but nothing to disable to enable hybrid sleep. My system seems to still go to sleep ok but the lack of the two options seems odd to me and wanted to see if anyone possibly had a similar problem.

Command Line Task Scheduler Power Options

Jul 28, 2011

I was trying to create a scheduled task via command line (schtask.exe) and I want it to run regardless of whether the user is on battery power or on AC power. I created an event and it runs fine on AC power but when I try it on the battery power, it doesn't work. I checked the task in the task scheduler and saw in the condition for my event the following options checked:

- Start the task only if the computer is on AC power

- Stop if the computer switches to battery power

After I create the task via command line, I can't modify the settings. Either way, I MUST only use the command line to create/modify the tasks. Is there any way to modify this variable? Or am I stuck on only having the task run on AC power?

Windows 7 Enters Power Save After 20 Minutes

Sep 10, 2010

I have 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium here on my home-built computer. The monitor enters power save mode exactly 20 minutes after I last touch the keyboard or mouse. When I am watching movies on my computer, it gets frustrating that I have to move the mouse every so often just so that I get 20 more minutes of uninterrupted viewing time. Unlike other users here that have reported similar issues, the computer returns to normal once I move the mouse (for another 20 minutes, then returns to power save). In addition, sometimes the sound mutes when it goes into power save mode.

I would like to know how I can disable this so that the computer does not enter power save mode. My Windows 7 power settings are already set to High Performance mode, to Never turn off the display and Never put the computer to sleep. The advanced settings have also been set not to enter power save. Yet the system still goes to power save after exactly 20 minutes.

I have looked at monitor settings, video card settings, and BIOS settings to see if there are any power save options that I could select or change, to no avail. I contacted eVGA (my video card manufacturer) and ASUS (my motherboard manufacturer) about the issue, and both replied that the problem was with the Operating System.

The video card and case are new.The problem I'm having is the monitor turns off after a minute or two as if it has lost connection to the computer. I hear a tick and then it shuts off. The computer itself stays running, fan lights are on etc. It's as if the computer goes idle. Nothing will turn the monitor back on,disconnecting, turning the power on the monitor off and on, etc. The computer cannot be forced off.
