Screen Saver Will Not Come On And Monitor Is Not Turning Off
Aug 10, 2011
My screen saver will not come on and the monitor is not turning off, even though I've set it using the advanced power settings. Also, when I put the computer into Hibernate mode, it always turns itself back on, usually in the middle of the night.

when my computer goes to sleep after it's on for a while when I move the mouse to get the screen back up it shows the backround no icons or anything to click. Same if I turn it off and turn it back on. I have to turn it off and on many times then go to safe mode and shut down then turn it on again for it to work. Just now I had to turn it on/off 4 times for it to show the icons and task bar. Usually it is left blank with nothing to click having no choice but to turn it off. Norton says no viruses. My computer is HP with windows 7. I bought it in 2011.

I've been having this problem ever since I installed Windows 7. I was previously and XP user and had no probs with it until I installed Windows 7.
Basically when I turn my monitor off and turn it on again, my PC restarts itself. It doesn't matter how long I turn the monitor off for - As long as I hit the off button on my monitor while my PC is still running, the moment I turn on the monitor, the PC makes a beep and restarts.

my monitor won't turn on after it turns off automactially (I set this to 5 minutes in windows). I've disabled sleep mode and all that jazz. I suspect it might be an ssd problem because when it won't turn on there is minimal activity with the hard disc LED light.I've also disabled sleep, hybrid sleep and the page file thingie. I just want it to turn off my monitor, not put my computer to sleep[CODE]

I have a desktop PC running W7x64 for which I rely on my Alfa AWUS036H wireless USB adapter for an internet connection.
Windows 7 has a feature that seems to detect whether I turn off my monitor or not (for one reason, I know this because it makes a noise when I turn it on or off). When I turn my monitor off, my internet is disabled for some reason. I would like it to stay enabled so that I can download files and keep other active connections while the monitor is switched off.
I can verify that the indicator light on the USB adapter turns off when the monitor turns off and that the wireless utility that controls the device senses no device is present (i can see this using my secondary monitor, behavior only occurs when primary monitor is turned off).
Does anyone know how to disable this from happening? I have tried both turning off "Selective USB Suspend" and unchecking the "Allow computer to turn this device off" in the properties of the wireless adapter in device manager.

Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) keeps turning the monitor off after 15 Mins of in-activity.However - before it does that at 14 Mins and 30 Seconds it sorta does a quick flash - then at exactlly 15 mins does the turning off.All the power options are set to Never. (I have even created my own power plan for this)I have never had this problem on this PC before - this is a new install - and since then it has been doing this.

I am going to preface this by saying that this has *nothing* to do with restoring from sleep or hibernate modes. In searching for an answer to this issue, I found way too much related to that.
My problem is simple. Occasionally (~50% of the time) when I turn the monitor back on after shutting it off, it will stay blank and not really turn back on. It makes no difference how long the monitor has been off. After turning it back on, the power light is green, indicating there is a signal, but the screen is black.
Again, the computer has not slept or hibernated. I simply shut off the monitor and later come back to turn it on. The same thing will happen occasionally if Windows shuts the monitor off after the configured time. (I did that last part as a test; I typically do not automatically shut it off.)
Specs:
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i7 860
MB: Asus P7P55D
Memory: 8GB - Corsair CMX6GX3M2A1600C9 (2 x 2 x 2GB)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
Monitor: Chimei CMV 221D
NVIDIA Drivers: 8.17.11.9562 (11/20/2009)
I originally thought it was the OS that was hung. However, I was able to go into the start menu and restart ("Start" -> "Right" -> "Right" -> "R"), so I know the OS was there responding to my commands.
Attempts to fix:
- Restart the computer. This worked.
- Shut off the power to the monitor and turn it back on. This works most of the time.
- Lock and unlock Windows. This works after a few tries.
- Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL followed by ESC. This works after a few tries.
So, I have a fairly simple work around now. So this is only a minor annoyance. Hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL then ESC does seem to work. I don't think it is a placebo because I waited 5 minutes and it did not come back, but after 2 cycles of that, it came back. I think that fixes it because it causes full screen refreshes.
Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone seen this before? The drivers are recent, but I noticed this with the clean-install Windows 7 drivers for this card as well. This is a very clean and very recent install (3 days). I never had this problem with Vista 32-bit, the same graphics card, recent drivers, but different CPU/motherboard/memory.

I have been having issues with my screen saver. No matter what the time I set it for it will not turn on. When I test it, it works just fine. I also have the computer set to turn off the monitor after a set time and that too is not happening. I was noticing that when ever there were updates to be installed that it wouldn't go to screen saver but there are no updates to be installed right now. I do not have a wireless mouse or keyboard everything is via USB.

Not sure if this is a WMC/Windows 7 issue or a TV issue.
I have an HTPC hooked up to a TV via an HDMI matrix. When I run the screensave (photo gallery) on my WMC I lose the signal to the TV very 20-25 minutes. I know this as I get a "No Signal" message. When I click on the keyboard the signal resets. This does not occur if I am watching a movie in WMC. Only when the screen save is running.
I don't seem to get this when I run the screen saver (photo gallery) on Apple TV through the same TV. It plays indefinately.
Is there a setting in WMC that turns off the screen saver slide show? Or is this a problem with my TV/Signal?

My screen saver is not functioning. I get a black screen saying "Windows could not start this screen saver".
When I try to adjust the settings it says "no preview available". I have changed no settings to make this occur.
I am using the original screen saver that came with the OS and attempting to use 'Bubbles". I have had this PC for 2 years and have been using Google Chrome for the last 2 months.

I was just sitting there doing nothing but just watching my screens (live financial charts) when all of a sudden the screen saver (I have "Mystify" setup) trying to start because I did not touch the keyboard and mouse for a few minutes. Then 2 of the 4 screen went blank and the remaining 2 froze and just gave me BSoD. This BSoD is not the first one and I suspect the screen saver is missing some files, etc. or Windows is corrupted. I think all my drivers are updated (with SlimDriver freeware). This time, the BSoD - as I recall it had a IRQL_. message at the top.

I use the picturers folder to display as my screen saver. In Windows XP I could control the dispaly speed of the pictures. In Windows 7 the three settings of Fast, Medium, and Slow are too fast. In the changing pictures option of SLOW it is still too fast to enjoy each picture.

My system Froze up and went to a black screen; upon reboot it wouldn't get past the BIOS load screen. I reset the CMOS and now everything works fine except an issue with the photo screen saver. The other screen savers work, but the photo screen saver will not. When I try to go into settings with the photos screen saver selected it looks like it loads something but nothing pops up, and then the screen saver window becomes unusable. It doesn't freeze but it acts like there is a second dialog box open and it's waiting for you to finish with that dialog box (if you know what I mean). I can't preview with photos selected either, but it doesn't become unusable.

I have a photoscreensaver error that reads as follows:
Photoscreensaver.scr Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point DwmHintDxUpdate could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll
It comes on when the screensaver starts, I have go no screen saver organised, the screen just goes black, then when I move the mouse the black screen goes and the above is in a box. It is possibly related to a rolling wallpaper I am using from my photos folder.
Has anybody got any ideas? Ultimate 64bit RTM

I am having a similar problem using the "blank" screen saver with a password...
Purchased a new Dell XPS 8000 three days ago and everything appeared to be working fine. I was using the wired keyboard and mouse supplied with the computer.
Connected my old usb Microsoft Wireless Comfort Keyboard/Mouse 1.0A to the system and suddenly the system would never go to screen saver. I checked for windows updates and it recommended an update for the wireless keyboard and mouse. Installed the update and now my system goes to screen saver.
The problem now is that it doesn't return from screen saver consistently. I am still characterizing the problem... When I move the mouse I get the login screen, type the password, hit return, and the screen goes blank (as if it is back in the blank screen saver).
I have had the desktop reactivate very quickly (normally) if the screen saver was on only for a few minutes. I have had it take 2 minutes plus to get to the desktop. I have also had the system freeze and ended up power cycling.
I thought this was a power management issue. I tried setting up power settings so nothing would ever go into power save mode but this hasn't made a difference.
I just reconnected my wired keyboard and mouse to see if the issue goes away. I am expecting this to solve it, but I really would like to use the wireless.
Update...
1. Went back to wired mouse/keyboard and the issue persisted.
2. Rolled back updates from last Windows 7 update: Dell Monitor 6/21/2009 1.0.0.0, Microsoft (HID Class) 5/8/2009 7.00.258.0, and Microsoft (USB) 11/03/2009 7.10.344.0. Problem still persisited.
3. Did a "reset to defaults" on the Dell power settings profile and removed the password from the blank screen saver. Seemed to resolve the issue, but only tried it once with the screen saver on for an hour.
4. Added the password back to the screen saver. Worked once and then hung the computer the 2nd time. I move the mouse, get the login screen, type my password, hit return, and the monitors go blank (as if it is in the blank screen saver). At this point it is hung, no mouse, no keyboard, ... must power cycle to get the system back up and running.
Yet another update...
Found a "solution" (let's call it a work around) for this issue in another thread: Seven locks up after an hour or so idle. I had my task bar set to auto hide, changed it to be visible all of the time and no more system hangs.
While I am thrilled to not have to power cycle everytime I go to screen saver, I would still like to auto hide the task bar. I wonder if there isn't a better fix that would allow me to still configure the task bar.
