Maybe this has something to do with the last round of updates. There are now transparent gray x's on the corners of the documents on my desktoop. They are on both .docx and Wordpad documents. I opened one of the documemts and it opened find but I cannot understand the purpose of these odd gray x's.

In my office, some of our users are having a very strange problem. Every now and again, a users documents and desktop shortcuts go transparent and have a little cross on them and cannot be opened. The only fix we have at present is to restart the PC.
The documents and shorcuts point to items that are on a mapped network drives. Not all of the documents go like this, only certain ones. There are no certain users or documents that this happens too, its completely random.

There is a gray box appearing at the top of the desktop over top of the desktop icons. It is about 2" x 3", solid gray, with nothing on it (no text or buttons). It doesn't appear when windows first starts, and the only way to get rid of it is to restart the computer.
I have an odd thing happening. Most my icons themselves have all gone transparent. I have a screenshot at [URL]. Before it happen, I had a virus warning. I closed what I was working on and ran Malware and Vast which found a couple things. I ran Malware a second time which then came back clean. I noticed that when I click on my computer that the list of shortcuts in the left column under favorites all my shortcuts under favorites are missing including Desktop, although it shows up on the field on the right side (transparent also). Most all my other icons are now completely transparent.

I having a problem where if i set any short-cut on my desktop to a transparent one (both made in Photoshop, and one downloaded from here [7forums]) it will work until I log off (or restart ofc).I have tried rebuilding the icon cache - again it worked until I logged off - and also tried rebuilding the thumbnail cache - but with the same resultThe Install of Windows is fairly new only about a month old and although I do have a mod that removes the short-cut arrow this was happening before that point.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have always been able to save documents, copied web pages, photos, etc. to my desktop. Never used to be a problem. While on a document, I would click "save as." A box would appears to the left with all he places I could save the file, including "desktop." I would just click "desktop" and he file would be saved there.The past couple of weeks, when I click "save as", the dialog box that appears to the left no longer has the word "desktop" in it so I cannot save to the desktop any more, at least this way. The 'desktop" saving option just seems to have disappeared.
I have seen some responses to this problem on various websites but I really have problems with these. They are too technical for me, an every day end user without tech expertise. Or the response suggests a round about way to save to the desktop (e.g, saving to documents and dragging to the desk top. Don't know how and don't want that much trouble. Other suggest saving to favorites and doing a bunch of other stuff. Unintelligible and too much of a hassle just to save to desktop.
Why did this simple way to save to desktop disappear and is there any way I can restore it? Please be gentle and simple. I need hand holdingI have a Dell insperon computer. Windows 7. The problem occurs on Internet Explorer (IE 8) and on Firefox 7.Driving me nuts.

These icons are: documents, libraries, control panel, my documents, desktop. I normally delete icons by right clicking on the icon & selecting "delete." However, when I do this to "my documents" it starts to delete the data not the icon. I'm now afraid to delete the any of the above because I don't want to loose the information. I tried using "personalize" from the desktop but no luck.

Every once in a while the entire screen will seem to dim as if you were looking through a cloud. I suspect it is some Aero effect, but I would like to know why it does that as it can happen when I am not using eithre the mouse or the keyboard. It seemingly just does it on its own. It only lasts a second or two.

It looks like the taskbar from something like Windows '98, to be honest. Also, the actual windows that programs open in are also a grey/white colour, like the taskbar. I've been doing some fiddling recently with customizing Windows 7 (specifically, installing Rainmeter and trying to install custom themes). When I tried to install a theme, however, I ended up with font troubles. Apparently it wrote over some of the main fonts and, oddly enough, made the font show up transparent in some places. (a specific example is in a folder I created on the desktop) Is there a way to restore the fonts completely to default? I've tried restoring to defaults in font settings, but no-go. What do you guys think? I'm thinking I should give up custom themes for a bit until I can make a restore point (I like to dive into things like this. Keeps it challenging, you know ) EDIT: Forgot to mention that this is all on the 64 bit version!

So, as a last resort, I've actually signed up for a forum to ask a question that I haven't found an answer to yet.That question is: Is there a program that exists that will make windows (like Firefox, explorer, Pidgin, Outlook, ImgBurn, CCleaner, etc.) transparent (much like PowerMenu) but then when you hover the mouse over that window, it becomes opaque?
