When I try to retreive documents that I have saved on the desktop they are not there. However if I try to save another document the previously saved documents are showing up to the Saved Documents dialog drop down box. Where have they gone?
View 2 RepliesI'm on a brand new HP computer running Windows 7 and everytime I download a file from the internet or even save files from local programs to my desktop, they are saved as some sort of hidden file...or at least they behave similar to hidden files. The difference is if I open up an Explorer window and browse to my desktop, I can see them there that way, but there is no icon on my desktop for the file. I CAN see the the saved file on my desktop if I turn "view hidden files" on...but when I look at the properties of said files, they are not actually marked "hidden." I can even copy/paste that same file in my desktop and I will see the copied file show up visually on the desktop, but still not the original file unless I browse to the desktop in an Explorer window.When right clicking the desktop, "Show desktop icons" is turned on and I can view all of my other desktop file icons, shortcuts, etc.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSince last Tuesday's Microsoft Windows Update, my Windows Explorer is experiencing a number of issues.The update hung for hours on "preparing to update" or some such thing.I had to manually shut the computer off several times and finally tried the safe mode start, which warned me that the update was not fully done.Now, when I click on Favorites/My Documents, it hangs; like it is searching but when the shaded bar gets to the end, it stays there and Explorer freezes. When I click on any the window, it goes whitish and a message pops up asking if I want to continue waiting or should the program be closed. I shut the program down.If I click any other item on Favorites or Libraries, even Documents within Libraries, Explorer does ok.
When I try to save a file in Photoshop or Dreamweaver or any other program, a message pops up saying the program failed to respond and gives me the option to wait or close the program.Even if I try to print to PDF, it does the same thing.In other words any time I need to save any item from within any program, the programs freeze. I even changed the save folder in PDF Phantom, from documents to downloads and still it won't save.My next step will probably be PC Restore and to hell with everything.

View 1 Replies View Relatedtrying to make some basic changes to the screen personalization but they wont stick. I'm in administrator mode, by the way. Every time I log back in, they revert.In particular, Im trying to change the way a slideshow is displayed. I go to Desktop Background and change Position to Fit. I Save Changes and all seems to be well. I also save the desktop theme under My Themes. But when I log back in it goes back to Stretch. Am I missing some kind of permissions thing? Or do I just not understand how desktop themes get saved?

On two occasions now I have been saving the files to the desktop as I usually do but when I go to the desktop the files are not there.If I look in the desktop folder, they are there. Running 64 bt Windows 7 Professional and scan for Malware yielded no issues.
p.s. When I reboot the files do appear on the desktop ....

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a folder I use to collect files for a program. It is subordinate to My Documents. Three days ago it disappeared. It is not, however gone! I can put the path into the address line of Explorer (the files version - not the browser) and it magically appears. Also I can search and find all the files/folders in that folder individually by name with 'search'. I've set cursor on My Documents and opened >Tools>Folder Options>View and checked "Show hidden files folders and drives". I've tried this at various levels as well. I also ran a batch attrib e.g.:
@echo off
Echo This script will unhide all files in the current folder and all subfolders.
Echo If there are a lot of files, it may take some time to complete.
Attrib -H /S /D

Wierd. I can get to the files, but the folder does not show up under My Documents as it should. I've tried to recreate the folder directly subordinate to My Documents, and get a warning that the folder already exists. This is not a total loss since I can get to the folder, but would be nice to simply open My Documents, scroll down and find it.
I was using Chrome looking at some info on Cisco's website and my browser crashed, and all the contents of my Documents folder are missing as well as the desktop shortcuts associated with them.I've tried system restore but that didn't even complete, and EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard Professional and I have not been able to locate them.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have always been able to save documents, copied web pages, photos, etc. to my desktop. Never used to be a problem. While on a document, I would click "save as." A box would appears to the left with all he places I could save the file, including "desktop." I would just click "desktop" and he file would be saved there.The past couple of weeks, when I click "save as", the dialog box that appears to the left no longer has the word "desktop" in it so I cannot save to the desktop any more, at least this way. The 'desktop" saving option just seems to have disappeared.
I have seen some responses to this problem on various websites but I really have problems with these. They are too technical for me, an every day end user without tech expertise. Or the response suggests a round about way to save to the desktop (e.g, saving to documents and dragging to the desk top. Don't know how and don't want that much trouble. Other suggest saving to favorites and doing a bunch of other stuff. Unintelligible and too much of a hassle just to save to desktop.
Why did this simple way to save to desktop disappear and is there any way I can restore it? Please be gentle and simple. I need hand holdingI have a Dell insperon computer. Windows 7. The problem occurs on Internet Explorer (IE 8) and on Firefox 7.Driving me nuts.

These icons are: documents, libraries, control panel, my documents, desktop. I normally delete icons by right clicking on the icon & selecting "delete." However, when I do this to "my documents" it starts to delete the data not the icon. I'm now afraid to delete the any of the above because I don't want to loose the information. I tried using "personalize" from the desktop but no luck.

View 5 Replies View Relatedmy system is a dell desktop running windows 7 64-bit home premium. i have 8 gb ram, and a 2.8 ghz intel core i7 processor. i was fooling around with windows backup and restore and i created a new user account. i rebooted and noticed that in my primary user account, the one i always use (not the new one), a good portion of my desktop icons had disappeared. i also noticed that in the new account i created, only 1 of the many desktop icons displayed. most, if not all, of the disappeared icons are shortcuts to applications such as vmware, itunes, Internet downloader, etc. but these applications are still there within the start menu under "all programs". unfortunately, i'm not sure exactly how long the missing icons have been gone. i just noticed the problem a few days ago.all the previous versions of my desktop folder, dating back to last july, seem to contain only the shortcuts that display now, not the missing icons, and i'm pretty sure that all the icons were present back then. it doesn't make sense. how could all the icons display if they weren't in the desktop folder to begin with? i have no idea of how i could have deleted only some of the shortcuts either. i realize i could just recreate the shortcuts on the desktop, but something weird happened here, and i'd like to know what it is. also, there is one icon that displays that isn't in the desktop folder but is in the "links" folder. it's a dvd-making application called corel windvd 2010.
i tried rebuilding the icon cache and it didn't bring back the missing icons. all it did was change my corel video studio application icon from a generic one to the little camera logo like it's supposed to be. there are still no icons displayed on the desktop of the new user account that i created, except for the corel windvd 2010 one and a gadget for my corel video studio pro x application (it's a movie editing software package). strangely, the gadget does appear in the new user account and so does the corel windvd 2010 icon.i have a screenshot of my desktop from before the icons disappeared and from that i can see that about 18 icons disappeared. furthermore, the default desktop folder doesn't contain any shortcuts either, which probably explains why no icons appear in the new account i created. shouldn't the default desktop folder contain the shortcuts?i tried running a microsoft utility that's supposed to fix broken desktop shortcuts but that didn't fix the problem. are there any other locations that might contain the missing icons other than just the "desktop" and "links" folders? perhaps within the registry or something?
I have a software installed and i changed the name of shortcut then i changed it back to original name, Ended up having no icon for .exe itself! When i change the name to a random name the icon appear again, I deleted IconCache.db and still have the problem.
