So, recently, my friend gave me his computer because he has upgraded his system and I found out that his PC is the exact same spec as my computer BUT his PC got 2 more extra RAM slot than me so, I was wondering to transfer my entire PC into one with his. I suppose, I can give it to a max of 6GB of RAM but the problem is...
Due to my lack of HDD and space, I can't afford to do a backup for all the files which I want to backup and, I was wondering...
1.) Can I just transfer my HDD with Windows 7 inside into his PC and use like normal?
2.) Will my files will be inside after the transfer?
I had a explorer window open, not sure which location but I closed in in a hurry and right before I noticed a folder I have been looking for. When I use the search function, it does not pull everything. I have readjusted the settings in there as advised before, but it still doesn't search everywhere. For example, I have things on my desktop, and if I type in the name, it doesn't appear.
So, how do I do a complete file name search for everything on my computer?
Next upgrade question: does the upgrade installer completely rewrite the master boot record?
I ask because the Adobe RoboHelp program writes authorization to the MBR (even though Microsoft says no program should do that) - if it gets blown out the app will not run and I'll have to jump through many hoops to get Adobe to re-activate it.
When I open a PDF file using Adobe, only one page opens, not the entire document. To access the next page, I have to open a new window. On my Vista computer, the entire document will open. How do I fix or change so the entire document opens?
I'm helping out my wife's friend who has a Dell Dimension 4700 with Windows Xp. So her motherboard fried and wanted me to transfer her files over to a new backup hard drive. So I took the hard drive out and hooked it up to my computer running Windows 7. I can see the files and everything just fine but when I click on a folder I get the "You don't currently have permission to access this folder" Click continue to permanently get access to this folder. So I click continue and it wants me to go to a security tab and change the owership from Unable to display current owner to Admin. The problem I'm running into is that it wants me to do that for every folder and file. Is their a way that I can do a blanket ownership over the whole drive, or is their a way to transfer the files without having to take ownership of the drive so my friend can just copy and paste the files with no problems.
Is it possible to load all the thumbnails for a folder when i open the folder in windows 7? Currently, windows only loads the thumbnails for the pictures that i have in view, and I have to scroll down for it to load the rest. I'm using fastpictureviewer to view thumbnails of my RAW .CR2 pictures so the thumbnails take some time to load, and my folders can have hundreds or thousands of pictures in them and i dont' want to have to scroll down and wait repeatedly to load all the thumbnails.
I was just wondering if you can suggest a tool to backup my entire computer , i have a lot of programs installed and it ll take me days if not weeks to find them all again in case something wrong happens .also i d like to know if the configurations of the programs can be saved .
I am doing a windows 7 recovery for my asus laptop and I have 3 options:
1) Recover windows to first partition only. 2) Recover windows to entire HD. 3) Recover windows to entire HD with two partitions.
I don't know what any of this means so an explanation of this choices would be great. Also, I would like to keep some of my old files like my itunes, which option will allow me to do that?
I'd like to backup my entire System or at least most of it onto a seperate Computer/NAS but as the size of what has to be transferred has gotten quite big in the meantime ( 4TB+ ) so I'm running into a problem concerning the time it takes to do this.Let me get some facts about me:Right now I consider myself a Noob when it comes to networking 2 PC's together mainly because I'm not working with it that much. Other than that I can solve pretty much any other computer problem in the blink of an eye. What I'm looking for:
- A system that serves as a backup for my entire current system which has about 4TB of storage housing - MANDATORY!
- A system that does the Copy/Move Process of the respective files fast - MANDATORY! Waiting 11.65h to transfer 1 TB of files at~25 MB/Sec over a GBit Network is an absolute no go. If possible I'm looking for something that rivals the 150-200 MB/Sec from my internal RAID-0.
- A system that serves as a MediaServer for my Home Cinema System either directly connected to the TV or a PS3 - OPTIONAL What I've tried so far: I recently bought myself a QNAP TS-412 which transfers the files at speeds of ~25 MB/Sec not giving me a happy face. Blame me for trusting the clerk at the shop where I bought it before reading through the specs. What I could do: Build a second PC from former HighEnd bits and pieces acting as a homemade NAS. Question is will this give me the results that I demand or will it lack the same way as the NAS?
I just reinstalled Windows 7 and it moved all my files to a folder called Windows.old.I reinstalled Outlook and copied back my AppData > Local > Microsoft > Outlook folder, but when I launch Outloo, there is nothing! What do I need to do?
I'm trying to take a screenshot of my music folder but it is too big to just alt+print screen. Is there a way to take a screenshot of the entire folders contents built into windows or a 3rd party program that can do it.
I go to my library and I see Videos, Documents & Music but NO Pictures. When I save a picture from the internet it takes me to the folder automatically, here I can see all my pictures. However when I try and find the Picture library on my laptop it cannot be found? It was there about a week ago. I performed a SYSTEM RESTORE which did not resolve the matter. I also tried "Restore default Library"
I've been leaving PC on overnight periodically, uploading my iTunes collection to the new Google Music beta online storage.
I come in this morning- the program had finally finished- over 6400 songs- and I noticed that the screen was vibrating. It does about 500 a night or so. the 'Google' logo on the web page. Even the icons in the systray. Back and forth. very subtlety. A reboot, and it's gone.
You may have trouble believing this, but the ENTIRE WINDOWS FOLDER on the hard drive has vanished.I've been using my machine as usual although am having some bad problems, such as not being able to download/install since Windows Installer is also gone. I guess that's part of the Windows.system 32 stuff that disappeared.I have a bad feeling I'll have to reinstall Win 7.How in the world could something like this happen? I have the old Windows folder from XP on the drive but no Win 7. Fortunately, I obssess over backing up and have Carbonite, Acronis True Image, Windows BU and everything on Seagate external drives.
I recently downloaded Flight Simulator X Deluxe, and When I ran a gadget on my desktop, it wasn't using the full GPU. What I want to know what to do is how to make the game utilize my entire GPU.
Skipped Vista, so I'm just learning to hate permissions in Windows 7. How do I enable the two other XP machines in the workgroup to access an entire drive on the Windows 7 machine? I've been able to set up access to individual folders (not even sure how I did that), but not to an entire drive - in this case data drive D.
My PC broke a while back and I had it covered by warranty so I thought they were going to scrap it and give me a new PC (Like they did last time) but they didn't.. So before that I went to User > (Username) > and deleted every library inclkuding downloads, documents etc. Anyway, when they fixed this PC and gave it back, Java was uninstalled because I had deleted the files for it, so I went to go install it and I've now installed it 6 times and it won't register as being installed even after resetting PC. I went to control panel and deleted 6 different versions of Java including JDK, Jre whatever version, but still no results.
I've got problems with my work laptop and impending hardware failure. Nothing too serious, just a dodgy fan - but the machine has to get sent away for repair (company policy, not a fat lot I can do about it). What would be great is if I can take a complete image of this machine and then run it in a VM on my desktop machine. Importantly the machine name needs to present itself as the same for me to be able to connect it to the domain over vpn. Both machines are win7x64, enterprise on the laptop and professional on the desktop. The laptop is an intel quad core with 8gb, the desktop a quad core amd with 16gb.Can anyone tell me if this is doable, or by any chances point me to an idiots guide on how to achieve it? This has come a really inopportune time, if ever there were a good time for a hw failure
I got folders of manga series i use like put the front sheet as the folder image as it helped me recognize witch one each one was easier, i use to do this on XP on my external and it was a simple roperties> customize > chose picture : and the image would be the entire folder icon and in nice quality , but after i moved to windows 7 (ultimate 64x) most folders it wont even allow customize and ones it will allow i have changed different files, default icon, icon, and other things, and the icon wont change the most i got one to change was that is made the image the first in line with the weird folder open icon with images, but i don't even want that open folder thing Is there a easy way to make it like it was, image as full folder icon without open folder effect thing Edit: i tried making icon files and changing the folders icon but this only changes them to open folders that wont shows anything anymore till i restore defualt icon + i placed the icon file into the folder and tried change it again, a desktop.ini file gets created and i have messed around with it trying different combinations but the folders icon stays as a default open yellow folder entire the desktop.ini is deleted ~ i figured a way make it work but it takes multiple tries, i placed the icon in the folder with HA attributes and pasted in a desktop.ini with[.ShellClassInfo]InfoTip=IconResource=ico.ico......and cant have any inherited permission stuff, and then sometimes have change the icon again in properties customize and then edit the ini again, and if the folder has Asia letters in it then need use another files ico and then switch over?
My folder under CUsers/ProfileName suddenly disappear when I tried to back it up.
I tried every possible way to find the folder or the files in it again but no luck. Basically the folders are GONE(VANISHED). I tried to search the files name but there is nothing on my computer. I have tried to change the Folder view option in Control Panel to show hidden files, no luck.
I tried all sort of Recovery Tools but no luck, the problem is that none of them are detecting the files as deleted. So I am not sure how can I restore them if they are not found as deleted at first place.
When I try to search for a file name like I had an article named "beforeafter.ppt" I get results in my Explorer but they are not actual files but rather Type: Shortcut in the folder/Recent.
I only have 1 user profile which is the administrator as well and no virus too as far as I know.
I have a media center on my home network with which i would like to be able to broadcast the drives themselves, and not just individual folders, on my home network, mainly for backup to my file server, but also if any other computer would like to connect to it to use the media. I have tried to share the main media drive as well as a smaller media drive on my homegroup and network, and the computers can see them, but when trying to connect, it times out and asked if i wanted to diagnose the problem. The only folder on the computer that i was able to broadcast was a folder in Documents on the C Drive. Is there a special trick for the other internal drives to be seen over the network, or is this just not possible?
I have been having issues with the booting of my c drive. I just installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 64 onto a fresh hard drive and it is booting. What I want to do is copy over the entire contents of my original C drive over to the new drive. I have a second computer to do this on and am not sure how to do it. I doubt that dragging and dropping will copy all the hidden and system files, which is what I want to do.
The reason I don't want to simply make an image of the first drive and restore that is that the original drive does not boot AND contains a system partition that I don't want to bring along. I am hoping to marry the bootability of the new drive with the files and information on the original drive.
Is there a method to link my entire C:/users folder to another drive with out the need to reinstall anything and have things work perfectly as the way they were? What I want is all the read and writes to be done on another drive.
I am using windows 7 as the OS.I have installed MS Office 2010 Beta, and having Adobe Reader 9.I came know how to convert word documents to pdf files using MS Office 2010.I had seen an article " how to convert pdf files to word documents?" on a site. The given procedure is, by clicking insert tab in MS office 2010, and then by clicking Object button, and clicking "create from file" tab and then browse pdf file.I have followed the procedure given. But it is converting only the first page of the pdf file, but not all the pages.I am here to know "How to convert the entire pdf file into word document" using MS Office 2010 ( without installing any application).
I have a my HTPC plugged into a 5-port switch along with my Xbox 360, PS3, and U-Verse TV box. Naturally, all 5 ports are being used with line 1 going into my router. There are 3 other computers in my house plugged directly into my router. My problem is that my network ceases to work whenever I plug in the switch. I am neither able to access the internet or view any other computer on my network for file/printer sharing. Running ipconfig shows that I have no LAN/internet connection. If I unplug the switch and plug in the components individually, then everything works normally.I have tried 3 different switches but I am getting the same result. It is very inconvenient to have to manually unplug and plug in my various game consoles and TV box in order to enable them to access the internet.
My home network loses internet connection when Windows 7 is active.
I have three machines with XP, one Apple and my current laptop with Windows 7 all connecting to the internet through the same router. After about 5 to 10 minutes of Windows 7 running I lose internet for the entire network. I have been able to replicate this problem six times consecutively. The router will indicate that the internet connection is active, but it is not. If I reboot my laptop to XP I must also restart the router to regain the internet connection to the entire network. Also, all computers see the network as active and running properly even when there is no internet.

want to upgrade pretty much my entire system except for my video card and my hard drives, mouse and keyboard. I read somewhere that someone did this, they booted into safe mode, removed all the drivers, upgraded and windows loaded fine, and operated fine.
i just bought a new computer running windows 7 home edition. my question is, can windows 7 make an entire image of my hard drive including (and this important) the recovery partition? If It can can anyone please tell me how. i need to have a complete backup of my hard drive in case of hard drive failure.
So I finally got around to checking one of my set ups and I discovered that it does not have the Windows 7 100MB section on the SSD. I double checked with Macrium and sure enough, there is no 100MB section on the SSD.
Is there a way to install it without having to reload the entire O/S again?
