To Stop People From Accessing The Boot Menu
Feb 24, 2012
i've setup a media pc for my family and kids, which boots into win 7 ultimate and then eventually into XBMC. My question relates to windows.I want to stop kids/family from accessing the boot menu, which shows in the event of a crash or by them pressing F8.How can i stop them from accessing the boot menu? Can i password protect it? What do you recommend?

Im running Teamspeak 3 and I use stereo mix to stream sound to my friends, the only problem is that whenever they talk Stereo mix plays their voice back and causes insane feedback. I would just mute everyone but that would mean I cant hear them myself. Is there any way to change it so that stereo mix wont pick up their voices let me still hear them?(I have 2 recording devices, Microphone and StereoMix. I have 2 playback devices, my HDMI to the TV and a Speaker output.) I use VIA High Definition Audio as my drivers.

I have a laptop with broken lcd. So im using it now as desktop, connecting it to an external lcd monitor.Last night I suspected a worm and tried to boot up in safe mode by pressing F8 but couldn't make it work because windows only activate the external monitor by the time it has finished loading drivers. The result was it keeps booting into normal mode. So, I remembered there's another way to boot into safe mode by accessing boot options in msconfig...Now I'm stuck with safemode and cannot do anything because safemode doesnt enable external monitor. I know for sure that I could enter password and get into safemode but I can't tell what should I press or click to access to that msconfig windows again to return boot options to normal state.

I have recently upgraded from the Beta to the RC. All went well, except for one issue. I can no longer access the boot screen to choose which of my dual-boots I want.
I have a wireless USB desktop, and whereas previously this was available to access the boot screen, since the upgrade it is only available after the Windows splash screen shows.
Has anyone else experienced this? If so, is there a fix?
It's not a major issue at present, but could turn out to be if, for any reason, I need to access my XP boot.
(I know that I can more than likely access it if need-be by connecting a PS2 keyboard, but I would like to avoid that hassle if possible)

I'm running on a relatively new install of Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. I recently (about 2-3 weeks ago) installed a new HD and decided to have a fresh start so everything was formatted followed by win 7 install. Everything has been running great up until mid day yesterday. Out of what seems like nowhere I experienced 6 or 7 BSOD's yesterday and from what I could tell they occurred when I tried to do any of the following: 1. Access drive D and play a video file (This is the new HD, it would instantly BSOD). 2. Access internet within 1 minute of startup.
Since yesterday I haven't had any BSOD's and have had the computer running, I haven't tried to play any videos off of HD and haven't reset my computer since (hoping that whatever it was has gone away, although I'm sure it hasn't). For the record I have accessed some music files on drive D without any issue, as well as several word and excel documents (not sure if that makes any difference?)I have a feeling it may have something to do with my new HD that I installed, but have no idea what it could be as it was running without issue up until yesterday (for at least 2 if not 3 weeks).
My system specs are as follows:S: Windows 7 64bit UltimateManufacturer BIOSTAR Group Model A740G M2+ Total amount of system memory 6.00 GB RAMSystem type 64-bit operating system umber of processor cores 2 isk partition (C) 272 GB Free (298 GB Total) isk partition (D) 1630 GB Free (1863 GB Total) isplay adapter type NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 other info:-all drivers should be up to date to the best of my knowledge- i've looked around and have seen a lot of recommendations to run memtest? I have yet to do soI've enclosed a system health report and minidump file as outlined on forum requirements.

i have been on various forums for advice but unable to solve - this is the problem -
* it turns on & I CAN get into advanced menus
* it will not repair itself no matter what
* it will not go into any other modes , safe Etc....therefore I cannot restore to factory settings etc....
* ive Tried all tricks such as F8, Alt & F11 etc..... to get into advanced menu settings - all lead to the black screen
* everything i click on enter leads to a black screen - only a white curser appears.
its as if there is no way of accessing the computer disc/ hard drive in anyway from boot up. there is clearly a hardware problem but i cannot access anything internal beyond ordinary & advanced menus i just keep being led to the black screen & no activity. the menus work & that is all. i run Windows 7 on a Dell inspiron 1564.

I am running an Advent desktop PC and its stats are as follows; Intel Core i5-2310 CPU @ 2.90GHz 8GB RAM Win 7 64 bit.The problem I am having is when ever i boot up the computer it shows the Advent logo-screen where I can access the boot menu etc but then it goes to a black screen with a cursor/underscore flashing in the top left... This screen stays for quite a while and I am not sure if it stops because of a key I have pressed or just because it has run its course but after it disappears the computer goes back to the logo-screen for a moment and proceeds to boot up as normal except slightly slower than usual. It is a relatively new computer and it has no problems running at all once the boot up is complete it is fast and as friendly as ever.

I have XP (x86) installed on one partition.
Last night I installed Windows 7 (x64) on a separate partition.
Anytime I had tried this in the past, using Vista, it always detected the Windows XP partition, and gave me a boot menu with "Earlier Version of Windows" option to boot to.
This is not so with Windows 7.
How can I get the boot menu to show both options, to boot to XP or to Windows 7?

I got this new computer and at some point I went into the boot option to try and install my PC to it's factory settings but when I opened up the boot option it showed something like this but not exactly:
1. MC43689SGDAL7
2. MATSHITADVD-RAM
This is very random and unusual and I have found no fix and as you should know it should look something like this:
1. CD/DVD Drive
2. USB
3. Hard Drive
4. something else
Even in my Bios menu it shows the same thing and I cannot change it so I can't boot from a USB or CD, etc.

I am doing an upgrade from XP to Windows 7. I have done this numerous times with no problems until today. I put in the disc for the upgrade and loaded the Boot Device Menu (F12). Then I selected Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive and I can hear the CD spinning but it does nothing. It wont load and the 'Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive' option stays highlighted. I just installed XP doing this exact same method because I installed a new harddrive and I had no problems. It only occurred once I put in the W7 disc.

Just Curious in whether a lot of the Windows 7 community have tried W8 at all.I really like Windows 7 but I've also been incredibly surprised at how stable and fast W8 is too -- It's primarily based on Windows 7 but it is a bit different. To me it's amazing that Windows 7 has evolved into something that could be used as a competitor to Android on mobile devices / tablets while still retaining features that are still needed on a PC using a "Classical OS".

I'm an IT Major at Boise State University and I often get a lot of people coming to me asking if I can reformat their PC for them. I was just wondering how most IT Professionals are able to reformat peoples PC's. Other then buying a new version of Microsoft Windows for every client, what service (if any) do IT professionals use? I know that Windows 7 Iso's are available online directly from microsoft, so theoretically if the person had their License sticker on their PC, you could reformat it using that. But as far as other software goes, (vista, office, XP, ect....) How do IT Pros do it? I've heard about Technet, but am not sure if thats what it's purpose is for.

Certain online games we play use P2P connections. We are playing from the same network thus have the same IP address. We have opened/forward required ports for the game, enabled DMZ, tried using Hamachi to no avail. Would purchasing a 2nd IP address from our ISP fix this problem?

Firstly, my apologies that I am making a thread as a first post, I hate to do it but am pulling my hair out at the moment. After reading through the BSOD posting instructions I have a small issue. As I cannot get further than just before the windows logo appears due to this BSOD, I cannot (that I know of) post a crash dump of the issue.I am currently attempting to build a crash repair DVD from my laptop, but am also looking at using the USB method.

Something similar has happened before (about half a year ago) but it got fixed when I did a system repair through command promt, until these few days...the loop came back again, sometimes it would boot like normal, at times it would get stuck or it'll go into a "checking file system" screen. It first started when I was browsing the web like usual, the comp suddenly froze and popped out a blue screen, it was too quick for me to capture it tho...In the past few days its gotten the BSOD a few times ive managed to take down a couple of the STOP codes 0x0000003D and 0x0000003B, im sure Ive gotten other ones too but i only remembered these 2.I've tried system repair & restore and command prompt but none worked...i have no idea whats wrong (hardware or software?) so im hoping someone can help me find a permanent fix if possible?
I have attached the dumb files through jcgriff2.Im using a Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit which my friend installed for me so i could use the 4gb ram i had. It used to be Windows 7 Home Edition 32 bit.My system is about 3-4yrs old now and OS is about 2yrs old i think.

Occasionally, as this PC is booting up, it asks if I want to Start Windows Normally. I press enter for this. However, if I don't do anything, because I am out of the room, it still goes ahead after 15 seconds. In this case, though, I can't operate any of the programs that come up on Windows 7 home edition. When I click on my Firefox browser for example nothing happens. I then have to reboot the PC (switching it off and on) and make sure I'm in front of the PC to press enter when this message comes up. Then all the programs run as normal. Is there any way of stopping it asking me?

I have a decent PC (i7 2600, 16gb ram, SSD + 2HDDs, etc). I've been using it for about a year.Since it's a work machine, in the last few weeks, I've been using VMware on it to use other experimental software, with no problems.Today, I tried to create a new VM and the software asked me to update it to a new version. I did it, create new VM and rebooted to change a config in the Bios (about virtualization). But when I tried to boot again, surprise: BSOD.
STOP: 0x0000007b, (0xFFFFF880009a9928, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)
When I got back to the BIOS, I found the boot order to be different. I fixed it but no good. I disconnected the other HDDs and all I got was a different boot error message. I plugged the SSD in another machine and it worked fine?
