View 5 RepliesI have windows 7 64 bit and also running a ssd. Just a few days ago I've started to have an issue where after my computer is running for a couple hours all processes continually increase the amount of memory they are using until I get an out of memory error. Here is a pic of it around 75%. I have 8 gigs of ram (kingston) that before this never went above 4gigs of use, so not sure what is causing this suddenly.

Been using this machine for 2 years no problem, suddenly its all freezing up. Any app I start sits and goes to "not responding" and eventually returns, even windows explorer takes minutes to open a folder. Browsers take forever to load a page. Its exactly like a memory leak or a process sucking all the memory, but in task manager cpu usage is v low about 10%, memory usage v low about 40% of 8gb, and no one process is taking lots of memory, Ive rebooted several times no change Ive installed all latest updates no change Ive run scannow and no issues were found Ive run a chkdsk on response was volume is clean ( almost instantly?) Cpu temp is fine at around 55 C
Ive run malwarebytes and found no malware Ive run a full virus scan with Avira and no viruses
Ive done a system restore to as far back as I could go (only to this morning) but no help.
I can only connect to the network using 64 bit applications on Window 7 Pro SP1.The problem occured after installing the latest version of iTunes (may or may not be related). I uninstalled iTunes with no change. IE 32 bit crashes after opening. Firefox opens but gives Server Not Found error. I cannot connect webservers on the local network with Firefox either. Filezilla will not connect to local or remote servers. VNC will not connect to local servers - IE 64 works fine and command line tools like ftp and telnet to internal and external sites works fine - this is not a DNS, Firewall, or Routing issue.
Same results in Safe Mode
sfc /scannow runs clean.
I reset the winsock, uninstalled all my network adapters, including the drivers and resinstalled them.Rebooted multiple times.Unfortunately I just discoved that System Restore was not enabled so I can't roll back.I doubt this is malware related as I have multiple levels of defense (postini, SpyShelter, Symantec Endpoint) and outside of iTunes have not downloaded or installed anything or even visited unusual websites. I'm about to do a deep scan that will probably take a few hours just to play it safe.
After I close programs that are still pinned to the task bar, can I install another program where the install wizard recommends closing any programs before continuing?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm an IT Major at Boise State University and I often get a lot of people coming to me asking if I can reformat their PC for them. I was just wondering how most IT Professionals are able to reformat peoples PC's. Other then buying a new version of Microsoft Windows for every client, what service (if any) do IT professionals use? I know that Windows 7 Iso's are available online directly from microsoft, so theoretically if the person had their License sticker on their PC, you could reformat it using that. But as far as other software goes, (vista, office, XP, ect....) How do IT Pros do it? I've heard about Technet, but am not sure if thats what it's purpose is for.

However, this position is a bad default. The panes should be side by side (left and right) not top and bottom. The marketplace is full of inexpensive laptops with good horizontal resolution and poor vertical resolution. It's bad enough some fool thought to split up the least available screen resources with a top and bottom look instead of going right and left side by side. Then, the rest of Microsoft followed along and shipped the product that way.So, is it possible to alter the view so that the social information is to the right or left of my message when open?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI normally dual-boot Windows XP and Windows 7 from separate partitions on the same physical drive. Now I cannot get Windows 7 Professional to boot after defragmenting the volume on which it resides from a different OS (Windows XP). Upon selecting Win7 from my boot menu, it initially gave a bootmgr error that a critical file could not be found.
I booted from the Win7 DVD and selected to repair my Win7 installation. I clicked on the details and the log indicated that partmgr.sys was found to be corrupt and had been replaced. Upon restarting, the Win7 animated logo appeared, but after that the screen went black and the computer rebooted.
I confirmed that partmgr.sys was replaced by booting into XP and looking for the file on the Win7 partition. I ran startup repair from the DVD again, but it said it replaced the same file- partmgr.sys - again. Chkdsk comes up clean, and the sfc /scannow command won't run because "there is a repair operation schedules that requires a reboot ."
There has got to be a way to get back into Win7 given that all I did was defrag..
I read an article titled "Windows 7 gets SSD-friendly" a while back that Windows 7 was supposed to take more consideration regarding computers with Solid State Drives. One of the mentioned steps would be to disable the Defrag option (something to do with SSD not getting any benefit from the defraged drives yet the extra work could actually lower the lifecycle of the SSD).Quote: At last weeks WinHEC techfest, Microsoft announced it wanted Windows 7 to make better use of SSDs. SSDs are on the path to reach their full potential says Microsoft senior program manager Frank Shu, who in a conference session on Windows 7 Enhancements for Solid-State Drives outlined how Windows 7 will be more SSD-friendly than Vista or XP. After recently installing Windows 7 onto my Lenovo x300 (which includes a SSD) I noticed the Defrag schedule was not disabled.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I have defragged my system multiple times to optimize my overall system performance and every single time it shows 1% defragmented, eventhough I have ran the built in defragger for windows 7 64-bit home premium x amount of times to fix this.
I know that its not an immediate concern, but is this something I should be concerned with, since something seems to be wrong during file allocations when defragging.

The defrag tool in Windows Vista and Windows 7 seems to skip fragments larger than 64MB in size in order to cut down on defrag times. This problem was easily "solved" by going into command prompt and using the "-w" parameter.Example: defrag c: -w This option seems to have disappeared in Windows 7, and as such, large fragments are left unoptimized.
