i have recently been stumped by an error i have never seen before "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer" after a little goggling i found that it is an error usually associated with Microsoft express, i have tried a few fixes like changing default progs. etc. but with little affect as most windows functions respond with this error. but it is appearing on every file, program, or windows function that i open and use even when trying to run commands through "run" it has rendered my pc near unusable as there is virtually nothing i can change or do to remedy this problem. note that I have searched for a solution on this and I can only find reference to this issue when clicking a link within Outlook.
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
Office: 2010 32-bit
Issue: When starting Outlook 2010 a pop-up appears stating the following."This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."I have gone through most of the recommended fixes for the link issue (ie Chrome / IE default and registry corrections for htmlfile reference) in the event that may be causing the issue. The only thing that is tied to Outlook so to speak is Sage ACT 2012 (add-in). ACT will run when running from start menu without any issue. There has been no apparent updates or changes to the computer (it was off over the weekend and all was working find on Friday).

I want to deny all access to removable storage for standard users at our office on one computer. I've been able to deny that access in the user configuration branch of GPedit. However; it restricts all users, even admin, when I enable that setting. how to I get it to differentiate between users? Of course I want admin to have access and standard users not to have access.

Today, this morning, I did a system image restore, just to test if it works.
The system image was included in the backup of yesterday, 11/5/2009.
The image restore went smooth, Windows 7 is correctly restored and is running like it always did.
One thing I do not understand, the status of the backup is The last backup was canceled, and also the size of the backup is Not available
I hope someone can explain why this is?

Wll, new to the forum but hopefully someone can help. I have Windows 7 Home Premium. In repairing the flashplayer problem, I must have disabled whatever system administrator privilege there is which allows one to click on links within word documents, websites, email etc. to go to other web pages. It now comes up with a message box which states "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effecton this computer. Please contact your System Administrator".How do I renable this capability in Outlook, etc.?

I am the only user on my notebook and, thus, have Administrator status. I am using Windows 7 home premium OS.I had installed a program which did not have a comprehensive help guide but had a website with a very good guide. So, as I have done many times with WinXP, I tried to copy a shortcut to the web page into the program's folder on the startup menu. I was rewarded with an access denied error. I also find that, without very indirect methods, I cannot access the all users startup menu folders.

I wonder whether this should come as a doubt at all, nonetheless, here goes:Are there any restrictions concerning the name one can give to an user account in Windows 7? Namely, I wished to know whether one can give the name "Admin" to an account to set with administrator privileges, or is such a name restricted to be used due to any eventual conflicts/confusion it may lead to in the Windows Registry? Windows 7 here is Home Premium.

I had a few annoying problems with Windows 7 so I deleted the partition that it was on and went back to using vista HP64-bit the problem is that the directories that I was using for personal files seem to have taken some sort of security features from Windows 7 and now I am having problems with them in vista for example
Access to the path 'D:DocumentsMy GamesFar Cry 2BenchmarksResults5.23.2009 9.47.49 PM' is denied
I have the permissions in vista set correctly

When Windows7 ships, I will be installing it on my laptop (Dell Latitude D631). This machine currently has Win XP Pro installed on a SATA HDD of 120Gb capacity.
My plan is to remove this disk & put it to one side, and install Windows 7 64bit on a brand new SATA HDD. I have bought a 500Gb WD drive and ideally plan to create 2 partitions - one for Windows, one for my data.
My questions are:
1. Any upfront advice on pitfalls of this approach?
2. Any knowledge (I can't specifically find any data on this, having trawled all sorts of places) of any drive capacity limitation for my Dell laptop - I have heard of 120 or 137 or other Gigabyte sizes as a limit so am now a little concerned that my lovely new 500Gb drive may not be fully usable.
If there's any inherent limitation, what's the way around this? Or will the BIOS 'autodetect' and see all 500Gb or is there something I need to do in BIOS or elsewhere to ensure the whole drive is visible and usable?
3. Finally...can I use the Windows 7 install process to create the 2 or even 3 partitions successfully?

This may seem like a strange thing to do, but today's SSD article reminded me of my desire to find out if this is possible - I have an unusual requirement that discourages me from even going the "small ssd as boot drive, large hdd for other things" route, unless I can find a way to do this. I do QA work for a distributor of downloadable games, so I like to be able to install the entire catalog (150+ GB), and put them into folders under "C:Program Files (x86)", so that I'll be able to see whether the UAC will cause problems for them (I install most of my other programs outside Program Files). Thus, to use ssd+hdd, I would need a way to apply the same restrictions to a folder on the hdd (and preferably also have any virtualized files directed to the hdd as well, but that's less critical).

I have some links saved in Microsoft word 2007 and now when I try to open them up using the control button and clicking on the link, I get an error saying: This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. It was working just a few days ago, and I haven't changed any settings and don't know what to do. I have Windows 7 64bit.

I have turned on the Guest account, and I need to set program and folder access permissions. I have google'ed the way to set file and folder permissions, but I am having some difficulty with some of the things that I need.
For instance I need to:
-deny access (just deny listing the directory structure; can read & write so apps can work) to C:* , Control Panel, and a few other locations
If I try to deny dir listing for Guest on root C: , it gives me a couple warnings and will not set permissions for "program files, program files x86, windows" folders even though I am the admin. After those initial issues, it continues to set the permissions for all the rest of the files. If I log into the guest now, goto Computer and double click on C: , it now says "access denied", which is good but if I type in the address bar up top "C:users", it will goto that location; not display the access denied message. I am using the Home Premium edition so I cannot use the Group Policy Editor..

I've been having DPC latency problems lately. It seems as if the latency ONLY spikes when using the internet. That's it. I play music in the Media Player; latency is fine, sound is fine. I play Halo and the sound is fine. I don't get it. Does the internet effect the latency? It only spikes when I'm watching a video or listening to music while online.

I recently got Mass Effect for christmas and was going to use it on my Windows 7 laptop. I got it installed, but when I go to play and it checks the configuration, it brings up a small box that says "Mass Effect has stopped working". I've tried running it as the admin, but tha doesn't work either.
I saw on a similar problem board that someone told them to check to see if they had ME1 PC patches installed...but I have no idea what that means, or how to get the patches to install them.
I keep looking for help, but these people are all people wh KNOW what they're doing. They're talking about OH it's the UAC or the DSP or the ABC or whatever. Well, those words don't mean a thing to me because it's all letters in my eyes. So if you help me,could you keep it simple?

I've been trying to modify the "folder picture" for a large number of folders, and to that end am going to write a script to modify the desktop.ini in each folder. The thing is, changing the desktop.ini doesn't seem to have any visible effect. If I manually change the picture (folder properties->Customize->Choose File) the new picture is used, and the desktop.ini is created or modified. However,if I open the desktop.ini in notepad, and make the same change there i.e. adding the line
Logo=C:Path To Filefile.png
to the [ViewState] section, there is absolutely no discernible effect. I've tried restarting explorer.exe, deleting the thumbs.db files, even restarting windows, but the changes are never picked up. Win7 seems determined to ignore any changes to desktop.ini it didn't make itself.
