Switching Windows 7 Install From HDD To SSD?

Aug 18, 2010

I realise there is another SSD thread here but I don't believe it is appropriate to myself.I just bought myself a new SSD which I would like to install 7 onto to use as my boot drive. therefore, i need to clear the Windows install from the HDD that I already have. What is the process for doing this? Do I just pop in the SSD,install windows onto that and then format my HDD afterwards?

User Switching No Longer Works After SP1 Install

Mar 21, 2011

Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit. Not on a domain. After I installed SP1, "Switch User" disappeared as an option. "Hide entry points for Fast User Switching" in GP Editor is set to Not Configured.

I also checked the Application Information service as Andre suggested, and it was not running. I started it, set it to automatic startup, and rebooted. Still no joy.

I have uninstalled SP1, and I now have the option to switch users as I did before installing SP1.

I'd prefer to keep my system updated, but for this system anyway, the ability to switch users as opposed to logging off is more important.

Cant Install Iiyama Drivers After Switching Gfx Card

Nov 30, 2009

I've got an iiyama vision master pro 454 monitor and today i changed graphics card today from a radeon 4850 to a radeon 5770 but after doing it my monitor drivers seem to have reset to generic pnp monitor instead of iiyama ones. I've tried downloading the iiyama drivers but even when i point it at the drivers it tells me my driver is up to date and doesnt change. Strange since windows automatically found the right drivers for me when i installed it.

Any ideas how i might get it to work?

Switching Drivers When Switching Users?

Oct 11, 2011

get windows 7 to switch audio drivers when you switch to another user account.

For eg.. normal speakers device for my personal account and then have my multichannel device (profire 2626) set as default for my other user account 4 studio work.

Atm, if i change it on one account it changes on the other account which is annoying and i'd just like to set default device for each account so i don't have to do this.

Switching From On-board GPU To NVIDIA GPU On Windows 7?

Sep 10, 2011

I am having trouble with my new Fujitsu laptop. I have an onboard GPU (Intel(R) HD Graphics Family) and a non-onboard NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M GPU. I have Windows 7 Home Premium and the latest drivers for my NVIDIA video card. I also obviously have DirectX 11 installed, since I have Win7.Now, the problem is that although Windows detects both GPUs, it uses the Intel one (this was true both before installing the latest NVIDIA driver and before that).I know it's using the Intel one since: 1. If I go to Control Panel->Display->Change display settings->Advanced settings, the Properties window for the Intel GPU pops up; 2. If I go to Intel(R) Graphics and Media Control Panel, under Options and Support->Information Center, it says "Processor Graphics In Use:Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000"; and 3. Graphics quality/performance is way too low for the NVIDIA GPU.I tried disabling the Intel HD thing in Device Manager, but all that happened was that the screen went blank, so I restarted my computer, booted into Safe Mode (the screen wasn't blank there), re-enabled the Intel, and then restarted Windows into normal mode (and obviously I still had the problem with Windows not using the NVIDIA GPU.Also, if I go into NVIDIA Control Panel (click the system tray icon and click "Customize which programs use the GPU"), under "Manage 3D Settings", if I add a game to the list of "programs to customize" (in the Program Settings tab) and then click Apply, the game still behaves as if it was using the Intel on-board GPU (as in, nothing changes in terms of quality and/or performance, regardless of the graphics settings). Also, in the Program Settings tab, under "2. Select the preferred graphics processor for this program", the selected setting is "Use global setting (Auto-select: NVIDIA GPU)" and it doesn't allow me to change that (the drop-down list is greyed out).

Switching To SSD With Windows 7 Upgrade Edition

Nov 26, 2011

I just ordered an SSD and will be migrating my Windows 7 64 install over to it. Most people seem to say I should do a fresh install instead of cloning the old drive. Currently my OS is on a partition on my HDD, while the rest of my files reside on a different partition on the same drive.

Where this gets slightly trickier is that my version of Windows 7 is an upgrade edition. From what I remember reading before my initial install, the installer is much happier and the process is much smoother if it can detect an existing Windows installation somewhere on the system. But on the other hand, everyone seems to advise disconnecting all drives but the SSD when installing (to avoid having the boot loader install on the wrong drive?).

I can't have it both ways. The closest I've found to someone with my same dilemma is here: Upgrade Installation - To new SSD From XP

It sounds like in the end he had to do the reinstall workaround (install Windows 7 again over the invalidated installation).

Switching From 'dual Boot' To A Single Partition Windows 7

Jul 28, 2011

I'm trying to install a new hard drive and retire my current one to backup and data storage purposes.

The problem is that I've installed Windows 7 on a hard drive with 2 partitions, an old XP partition (D:) and the new W7 partition (C:). At the moment the disk management screen looks like this:

What I am trying to do is delete the D: partition, and then copy/resize the C: partition including Windows 7 installation to my new hard drive (F:)

If I ignore the new hard drive and just try to migrate to a single partition, I can never get it to boot. I tried using Partition Wizard to set the C: as a primary, active partition, copied over the bootmgr and boot directory, then used bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot to try to make Windows 7 bootable from just the C:, but it didn't work. All I got was "disk read error" whilst the PC was trying to boot off the C: (this is with all other drives disconnected...).

I could try to migrate to a single bootable partition from a 'dual boot' configuration?? I tried this video's advice and did everything as instructed but got the disk read error problem.

Which Windows 7 Works When Switching From Intel On Board To Nvidia/ATI Gfx

Dec 27, 2011

I have heard that maybe some versions of Windows 7, such as Starter or Home Basic, will not permit the automatic switching to a stand alone graphic card (Nvidia or ATI Radeon).

I wish to find out if this is correct and if so, which versions are restricted? I use Photoshop and play HD video files up to 2GB in size, so I want to ensure switching is performed for improved graphical performance. Based on this finding, I can then decide what O/S to buy with a new laptop I'm about to purchase.

Switching To Windows 7 From Xp - Monitor Wont Display 1600x1200 Now?

Jun 9, 2011

I cant go higher than 1200 1024 i think its. I was able to run in 1600 1200 in Xp on the same monitor. In the settings it even says recommended 1600. When i try this resolution the monitor just switches of so i press escape to get back to one previous. This occurs with any resolution above 1200.

Ive been with this problem since ive had windows 7 [couple months, more] now. I thought that if i buy a newer monitor this might fix it but if i can use 1600 resolution without buying monitor just yet then that would be great.

Windows Shifting Back To Primary Monitor When Switching Users

Oct 17, 2011

I run a dual monitor setup, and I use two user profiles and switch between them throughout the day. I set up both user profiles identically, which is as: In each profile, I run multiple instances of Internet Explorer 9, so I have four or five Internet Explorer windows open with multiple tabs open within each window. I keep two IE9 windows open on my left monitor, and three open on my right monitor. I also have MS Word and MS Excel open on my left monitor, and two notepads open on my right.

When I click on Start and switch user accounts, if I go back into my first user account, my windows will have either moved off screen somewhere, or they will have moved to the first monitor. The behavior is inconsistent in which windows are shifted around, but the windows end up moving none the less, and it ruins my work flow. I spend all my time setting up the windows back to their 'correct' positions.

Switching users to the 2nd user account will cause the same consequences with the windows set up on the 2nd account, thus defeating the purpose of utilizing multiple profiles to make work more efficient. I recently switched to Windows 7 on a new computer. My "old faithful" has Vista 64 does not exhibit the window shifting issue.

I am running a new 2nd gen sandybridge system, with an asus h67 motherboard and an i7-2600. I have 16 gigs of ddr3, and Win 7 64 Home Premium. I have an ATI Radeon HD 6570 running both monitors, with the latest video drivers installed. I've encountered this issue with and without ATI Catalyst suite installed and with/without Ultramon installed.

I don't want to revert back to Vista 64 just because it will be a lot of downtime to install and transfer my profiles again on the new machine, and I'd like to stay on the most current OS regardless, but I may have to switch back to Vista if this is a known issue on 7. We use dual monitor Windows 7 setups at the company I work for (my day job), and Ive verified 3 of my coworkers also have this issue. I also replicated this issue myself on one of the work Win 7 comps.

Switching BIOS SATA RAID/AHCI Setting Causes BSOD At Windows Start

Mar 30, 2012

I just changed my disk setup from:

1 SATA HDD Primary OS Disk
2x SATA HDD Backup Disks in RAID 1

TO:

1 SATA SSD Primary OS Disk
1 SATA HDD Backup Disk
[No RAID]

Everything worked great, no problem. So, since I don't have a RAID array anymore, I decided that I could change my BIOS setting to AHCI instead of RAID. I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R v1.0 mobo.

These are my steps:Settings > Integrated Peripherals > "SATA RAID/AHCI Mode" = RAID
--> Changed this setting to AHCI Reboot Windows Start screen shows up, but as the color orbs are spinning into focus, BSOD and immediate restart Repeated reboot several times, same outcome
Next Step:Launch BIOS settings Integrated Peripherals > "Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode" = RAID
--> Changed this setting to AHCI Reboot Windows Start screen shows up, but as the color orbs are spinning into focus, BSOD and immediate restart Repeated reboot several times, same outcome
Switch both settings back to RAID, reboot, and Windows starts up just fine, no issues.

What am I missing? Why can't I set it to AHCI mode without BSODs?

How does it all look on Windows? i.e. i'm using Adobe Master collection cs4 and am wondering if it will work with windows x64... what about antiviruses, Flash etc?

Ps. Is anyone using the x64 on acer aspire 69xx series? If everything running OK?

Application Switching

May 21, 2009

So I have windows 7 RC1 installed. Generally I never do task/application switching using windows but I recently installed a wacom pen tablet and one of the shortcut keys on the tablet was programmed to switch to various applications... BUT IT DID IT IN A WAY I HAVE NOT FOUND IN Windows 7 YET!

Usually Alt+Tab gives you the generic windows task switcher that shows all the icons of the various apps you have open.

But the pen tablet used an app switcher that did this..

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/49679/win7application.png

Its a screenshot of every open window you have open and you can cycle through them til you get to the one you want.

Any idea what the shortcut keys are to access this application switcher?

Switching Monitors

Sep 19, 2009

Since I am a musician, I must practice at home and with the modern hardware it became impossible to have total silence in the room, specially a small one. Tried everything an after all, my solution was radical but very effective: My cpu is in my living room with my LCD TV and a keyboard and mouse and, after drilling a wall, I have a LCD monitor, keyboard, mouse, USB hub and a USB CDRom in my studio.

This is perfect because I have total silence to practice and a Home Theater PC in the living room. Under windows XP using the NView software I was able to create a hotkeys combination(ctrl+y) that allowed me to switch monitors without any confirmations, right clicks or dropdown menus. Just click those two keys together and that's it. Now, not even a MultiDisplay Wizard is available.

Sorry for writing so much, but here is the question: How can I switch monitors like I use to do? Is it possible to create a shortcut or hot key or, in a worse case, use the usual way in windows seven but in a way that a confirmation is not required? When I change resolution asking to show only in one of the screens I must run to the other room the confirm the change.

This is the main reason I did not install Vista, but I hope it will be a solution in Windows 7.
