USB / Net Drivers Killed By Windows 7 Auto Update
Feb 18, 2012My ASUS Notebook was running fine when I went to bed the other night and Windows 7 did an auto update. I logged on the next morning and all the USB, Network Adapter, and Sound drivers were dead. I checked, and it appears that a few of the components of the Windows update did not complete successfully (.Net framework, Silverlight, etc.), so I assume this has something to do with it. I assumed it would be no big deal to fix the drivers, but boy was I wrong. Here's what I've tried (and failed) to fix this.

Jan 2, 2013I have Windows 7 Pro 64bit set to automatically update the OS. Three days ago I lost connectivity on my shared home network that uses a Netgear WN2000RPTv2 wireless extender to connect to my Ruku which had worked perfectly to stream movies. (Amazon Prime). When I began to check out the systems for possible errors, I noticed that there had been updates for Netgear, several optional and one recommended. All failed with the error code of 80070103. I've tried unplugging my routers, did a hard restart to factory defaults, etc., all resulting in no change to the systems. The desktop pc connected to it is as follows:

Slow Startup / Shutdown - No Auto Refresh And Update Hangs
Oct 3, 2010I just installed a retail copy of win 7 on my laptop and have been experiencing some issues. At first everything worked fine but out of the blue my desktop/folders have not been auto-refreshing. Whenever I try to delete or create a new folder I have to manually refresh to the folder in order to view it. When shutting down my laptop it takes 5+ minutes and when my desktop is loading after booting up the laptop it takes several minutes for everything to load and for the win 7 chime.
Finally, it won't allow me to update. When I try to use the windows updater it hangs for a while on "creating restoring point" (which may be normal) but then permanently hangs on installing update 1/16 at 0%. If I try canceling the update nothing happens and even when I try to shut down the laptop it attempts to install the updates but hangs on update 1/16.
From researching these issues I've realized that the auto-refresh problem is not uncommon and has something to do with a network. This may be unrelated but these problems only started to occur when I was transferring pictures via a USB stick.

Nov 12, 2009I recently picked up a pre-built machine that came with Windows 7 (OEM) pre-installed and an Nvidia 8400GS. I replaced the 8400GS with a GTS 250 and figured I'd uninstall the drivers that Windows 7 pulled in through Windows Update, and download the latest Nvidia drivers.
I uninstalled the stock drivers in the Device Manager, checked the "delete drivers" box and restarted the machine. Windows 7 dedected the card and immediately started to auto-install drivers. I could skip the downloading of new drivers, but it still installed older Nvidia drivers (dated April or May 2009). Can this be prevented? If so, how?
Windows Update then offered to download newer drivers (September 2009), which I allowed manually (this part is fine). What I'm looking for is a clean way to uninstall the drivers installed by Windows 7 and then manually install the driver package I downloaded from Nvidia.com.
On a side note (should probably make a separate post for this), is it normal that after the Windows 7 desktop is displayed (including shortcut icons), after two seconds the icons reset (become white default icons) and somewhat slowly reload? After a reboot, that is. I don't remember this happening with the 8400GS before I fiddled with the drivers.
Auto-log On, But Still Have A Password Or Lock Computer?
Nov 2, 2011I was wondering if there is a way to Auto log on but still have a password.I want it to log in and not stop at the log in screen. So it will do a full boot with out user intervention, but still require a password to access the computerReason being is my netbook takes forever to log in to. But I still want the added security of a password. was thinking about a script file that will lock the computer, placed in the start up folder, but it would be annoying to be on the desktop doing stuff then get sent to the lock screen, when the start up scripts finely runs. (being one of the last things to run). It would be simple to by pass, by deleting the script before it has a chance to run when the computer logs in.

Jul 9, 2012I had my computer do this awhile ago, but I had fixed it. My GPU fan wasn't spinning, causing it to overheat and then auto restart to prevent damage. This is no longer the issue as my graphics card fan is fully functional and my temperatures are now what seem to be normal. This isn't a gaming GPU, but I'm not really playing any stressful games. I have a AMD Radeon HD 6670 1GB, and I'm playing Minecraft. I downloaded a program to monitor temperatures and my graphics card never rises above 121* F while playing Minecraft. After awhile of playing Minecraft or any other mildly stressful application, my computer auto restarts. I know it is not my CPU, which never rises above 65* F. I cannot imagine what could be overheating, or if that is even the problem. No recent hardware changes, nor software changes.

Dec 15, 2012The Auto repair was useless, and to make matters worst, I started getting the evil blue screen. After a week of headaches, I decided it wasn't worth it. So, I used safe mode to save all our pictures and my books on a flashdrive(nothing else, just so it whatever was hurting the comp wouldn't come back on). Then I decided to recover the comp so I could rid it of whatever was causing the awful blue screen. It fixed it, until recently. Now understand, I didn't put anything back on the comp(not even the stuff I saved to my flashdrive) since it irritated me so much before, so I know I didn't do anything to cause this. See, now the comp won't start up at all without the Auto Repair coming on. Even when I get the option to start up windows normally and bypass the auto repair, I still end up back on the auto repair. I'm totally lost on what to do.

Jan 5, 2010I use a Linksys WUSB600N wireless adapter and I'm having a problem with it. Every time my adapter is detected, Windows 7 installs its own drivers which are terrible. I can't even install the drivers I want! I have searched everywhere but haven't any luck for solutions. I've even tried installing my drivers over Windows', but that doesn't work well. I have Windows set to "Never install driver software from Windows Update" but it still does.
The setup.exe for my drivers requires the adapter to be plugged in to finish installation, but I can't do that with Windows' drivers inevitably going to install first. Nor can I manually install drivers with the Device Manager if it also requires the adapter to be plugged in. I'm guessing the DriverStore is causing Windows to auto-install these faulty drivers?

Dec 23, 2012I usually consider myself having some idea about computers but this things is out of my league. [code] My computer has been getting BSOD'S for several days after installing java 7 update 8.I somehow managed to get system back on it's track for few times with cd/usb booting but now, when i start it i just get a black screen no beeps at all and back, gpu and cpu fans are working on max.Tried reseting bios with clr cmos button and taking the bios battery out but nothing helps.I thought it could be hardware error and as there was black screen i suspected the gpu which was making problems before the fan came off so I replaced it with accelero l2 pro.I don't think it's the mobo problem because when i remove both ram sticks i get like 8 beeps until it restarts and everything repeats.But on the other hand how could it be hardware problem if comp autorecovered bios.I also thought about flashing the bios but the boot is set to floppy so i am not sure how would that work out.

They don't start automatically in auto-play to load, and my reading of the file labels in the CD makes no sense to me.

Jul 13, 2012I purchased an HP dvt6-7000 laptop about a month ago - Windows home premium 64 bit. Am using it for work, but recently it's started crashing whenever I leave the computer and it auto-locks. I tried disabling sleep but it still crashes. I called HP support and they had me test the memory and hard drive in Bios, and update the BIOS, but it still crashed.

May 20, 2012I bought a Asus U36J laptop back in April of last year and ever since then I have been beating around an issue that I dont seem to be able to resolve one way or the other. When ever the laptop is on battery and in battery saving mode it has my taskbar on autohide. If I turn that off, then it stays off right until it is put back into battery saving mode at which point it is "magically" ticked on again.
Is there no way to simply disable that feature, as its annoying me greatly. I know its tied into the battery saving desktop, and I want to keep the battery saving desktop but want a full taskbar all the time. I found a supposed fix to make that happen, and while it actually makes the taskbar appear all the time, it still is a bad hack as any windows I have open wont "attach" to the taskbar but attaches to the buttom of the screen.
So for the love of god is there no sane way for me to keep the battery saving desktop but get rid of the autohiding taskbar. Otherwise I know Asus most likely wont be my laptop of choice next time aroumd.

Feb 22, 2009Well, I was messing around and thought I would test out the Vista beta 182.06 drivers vs. the drivers you get through Windows Update. All I did was run a demo in Team Fortress 2 in with both drivers. Also my gfx card is a 7800gt, so this might not apply to newer cards.
Of course take this with a grain of salt, especially for newer systems, but if you have an older pc, and are running with the 182.06 or maybe Vista drivers in general, try using the Windows Update drivers again. I know which one's I will be using from now on.

I read in many places in Internet about drivers updates and they all say I shouldn't update my driver from the CD provided from the manufacturer but from Internet and install them in a USB flash drive. So that's what I did, I installed my BIOS current driver and other MOBO drivers in my USB flash drive. However, I don't know now how to update my drivers without the CD's. I would like some help on how to update all my drivers (my PC is completly new) using a USB flash drive.
