View 4 RepliesI just sent up a brand new PC and went through the Windows setup steps. It asked me to reboot and I did so. I must have mis-typed my password while creating my user account, because I now cannot login to the computer. Seeing as I JUST got it booted up for the first time I hadn't had an opportunity to create another administrator account or password reset disk.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed Xemacs for windows and I'm having a problem associating it as the default program for .txt files. I know the standard process, but that standard process doesn't work. I have "Windows 7 Home Premium installed on a 32 bit system. I go thru the standard process via Default Progams/Associate a file type/ process and then browse to the Xemacs application. When I select it, nothing happens. When I check the association, it's shown as "Unknown application". Note: I have a 64bit system that handles the assocation just fine.
Also, on the original system, the choices for default programs is very limited. It seems that programs I have installed some how are not being populated in the eligible "default programs" list?
Any ideas? Is there a brute force way to add programs to the Windows 7 default programs list?
I installed a 64gb Samsung SSD and a WD 500GB HDD and I am wanting to use the SSD for Windows OS and then use the HDD for programs like Steam and Microsoft office and store music and pictures on it. Is this setup up possible and if it is how do you do it.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm just setting up a new Win7 Professional system, and I want to encrypt a partition on the hard-disk with TrueCrypt to store certain stuff including the data directory for MySQL.
However, the MySQL service would probably start before I'm logged-in and therefore throw a fit if the data dir isn't mounted yet. Likewise, I can't be sure MySQL will stop before the Truecrypt volume is dismounted at logoff/shutdown.
Is there any way I can make MySQL wait for the Truecrypt volume to be mounted after logon, and then stop it at logoff before Truecrypt dismounts? It seems it might be possible using Group Policy, but as I come from XP Home I've no experience of this tool.
PS - Just to make things more complicated, I'll mostly be logging in as a Standard User, so the solution has to work whoever logs in.
Not asking much eh?
I have turned on the Guest account, and I need to set program and folder access permissions. I have google'ed the way to set file and folder permissions, but I am having some difficulty with some of the things that I need.
For instance I need to:
-deny access (just deny listing the directory structure; can read & write so apps can work) to C:* , Control Panel, and a few other locations
If I try to deny dir listing for Guest on root C: , it gives me a couple warnings and will not set permissions for "program files, program files x86, windows" folders even though I am the admin. After those initial issues, it continues to set the permissions for all the rest of the files. If I log into the guest now, goto Computer and double click on C: , it now says "access denied", which is good but if I type in the address bar up top "C:users", it will goto that location; not display the access denied message. I am using the Home Premium edition so I cannot use the Group Policy Editor..
As part of the chipset driver installation, it also installed the RAID and SATA drivers that Nvidia provides.I have a 300GB HDD on the primary IDE channel although I currently boot from one of my SATA hdd's.How would I go about transferring my OS to a RAID 0?Would it be possible to just system image my current OS onto the IDE drive and then format my two SATA hdd's, enable RAID in BIOS and then use Seagate Disc Wizard to install the system image onto the RAID 0?Is seagate disc wizard capable of transferring to a RAID drive??Have the RAID drivers definitely been installed with the Chipset drivers and will Windows recognise the RAID array?Have heard that you have to set up a boot partition the same size as the image on the RAID 0, would it then be possible to expand that to use the entire RAID partition

I can no longer install programs or modify existing programs.According to the security permissions, I have none. Nor can I change my permissions because in order to change them I need access to the C drive, which I don't have.I have tried creating other users and putting them in the admin group, etc. but nothing is working.

I have Administrative rights to the computers only, and network access rights on our network. I keep a number of computers up to date, including various 3rd-party programs (i.e. java, flash, etc), and I currently manually remotely connect to each computer and install the updates to the programs from a network share, then run Windows update, select all the critical updates (as well as all the applicable optional updates), then disconnect and move on to the next one. Needless to say, time quickly adds up.

View 1 Replies View Relatedone of my co-workers wants me to get rid of some viruses and install office 2010 home and student on her computer with the key she bought. her computer runs windows 7 64-bit. after backing up her data, i finally ended up doing a factory reinstall from the backup partition. so i downloaded all windows updates and installed antivirus and firewall software. then i downloaded the office 2010 trial and tried to install it. it seems to begin installing without any problems. then a splash screen for powerpoint appears. it says that its "processing" and does that for about 20 minutes and then there is a balloon that pops up saying that office is downloading files. after all that happens, an error message appears that says something like "powerpoint cannot be opened. please try again later or repair this software in the control panel" with no sort of error code. i then tried repairing it from control panel which claims to complete successfully. so i restart and try to install again and the same thing happens all over again. if i try opening word, excel, powerpoint or onenote the splash screen appears and does the same thing that i described powerpoint was doing. ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. i also tried installing the 60 day trial for office 2007 that came preloaded with the computer and then installing office 2010 over it. same thing happened.

My friend told me that I can install the OS on the SSD and still have the programs on the HDD running without reinstalling everything. First of all, is that correct? If so, how do I do it exactly? Install windows on the SSD and set it as first in boot sequence? I did that (I think) and it just gave me a brand new windows 7, with all the programs'es files on the E drive, but unable to run and start.
