Transfer Programs From Windows 7 To New Install?
May 11, 2011
I have Windows 7 on a hard drive with a corrupted boot sequence. I made a clean Windows 7 installation on a new hard drive. Is there any way I can transfer programs from the old installation to the new one? Both are on the same computer.

Ordered my new SSD a few days ago for a boot up drive with a few other games and programs (only 50gb) I was wondering if i could install win7 on the ssd and then transfer the programs to the ssd? Like could i take the cod4, photoshop, sony vegas. folder and copy it to program files on the ssd and then format the old hdd to get rid of the operating system on it and other unwanted things? Or will i have to reinstall everything.

But I installed Windows 7 64 with the dual boot option, and have Vista 32 as my regular OS. Is there any way to transfer the programs from the Vista partition over to the Win 7 partition without re-installing each and every program?
On a related note - is there a way to transfer my old desktop from Vista over to Win 7 just the way it is?

Joined a few days ago, just got a new computer, hasn't arrived yet. Had posted a purchase template and other things but little help so did the best I could with that decision. Bought my great old computer long ago when I knew nothing at all. I got it second hand from a third party, and didn't get any install disks. Can anyone tell me what old material is transferable to the new computer, and how does one do the transfer.

My dad and I are planning to switch computers and he would like to transfer all of his programs, software, and folders to my computer. With that, we would just simply have to switch hard drives. We could always set up a new OS and reinstall all of the components and drivers manually. Is there an efficient way of keeping all of his programs and folders while still be able to reinstall a new OS? Or would he have to reinstall all of them? We have an extra external hard drive at hand in case if we need it for backing up

I just built a system with a SSD and a regular Sata 3 mechanical HDD. My SSD is starting to fill up and I need to transfer some programs and files to my HDD. I downloaded a program called SymMover and successfully transferred a couple files but don't want to rely on software. I've never had a system with two drives before and I'm not sure whats the best way to do this. How do I manually transfer and link programs and files between both drives?

I just got a new computer, and was on the process of transferring my files from my old computer using Windows Easy Transfer. It was taking a while so I left it on overnight. When I checked on it again, it had reboot to install windows updates. Now, I've got a folder in my Users section that apparently weights 0 bytes, but that is taking up easily 100 GB, which I also cannot access; for trying to do so leaves me with the same explorer window, and unable to return using the address bar or the back arrow. Is there anything I can do about it?

So over the past few days it seems that I have lost control of my C drive and all of its contents.I can no longer properly access it, and everything opens in "Read-Only". I can no longer install programs or modify existing programs.According to the security permissions, I have none. Nor can I change my permissions because in order to change them I need access to the C drive, which I don't have.I have tried creating other users and putting them in the admin group, etc. but nothing is working.

My company computer (hooked up to our internal network; no homegroup) has just had a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I went through the process of mapping network drives and had a problem when it came to connecting to IP addresses and folders in the format of '\servershared folder'. Turned out that I had to change a security setting.
Following the instructions on this site, I was able to resolve that issue. These network locations are CNC machines and the files that I am placing on the machines contain CNC code (G&M code and X, Y, Z values for 3D machining). Basically, G&M code cannot have multiple X, Y or Z values on the same line (it wouldn't make sense to go to two X locations in the same move).
When I transfer CNC files from a network location (all of our files are stored on a server) to the CNC machine, they occasionally get corrupted where part of one file is contained in another file. I have tried transferring one at a time and in bulk, both with the same result.

I am part of a large organization that has a large amount of computers on our domain controller. I have Administrative rights to the computers only, and network access rights on our network. I keep a number of computers up to date, including various 3rd-party programs (i.e. java, flash, etc), and I currently manually remotely connect to each computer and install the updates to the programs from a network share, then run Windows update, select all the critical updates (as well as all the applicable optional updates), then disconnect and move on to the next one. Needless to say, time quickly adds up.

Would like to get general thoughts on the best way to transfer programs from old computer to my new 8-core Windows Pro 64-bit(new install) computer. One of my areas that I'm concerned with is that several of the programs I'm wanting to transfer were purchased over the internet & downloaded with no physical media involved. Otherwise, I would just do the install via the install cd's

I am trying to install office 2007 as part of a system rebuild after installing a new hard drive. I get a window saying install was successful, I can open power point or excel but when I try to open word it hangs up at the word logo page. I have done remove programs in control panel, I have used revo uninstall to try to clean the registry. I suspect a corrupted fragment in the registry but don't know how to get at it.

one of my co-workers wants me to get rid of some viruses and install office 2010 home and student on her computer with the key she bought. her computer runs windows 7 64-bit. after backing up her data, i finally ended up doing a factory reinstall from the backup partition. so i downloaded all windows updates and installed antivirus and firewall software. then i downloaded the office 2010 trial and tried to install it. it seems to begin installing without any problems. then a splash screen for powerpoint appears. it says that its "processing" and does that for about 20 minutes and then there is a balloon that pops up saying that office is downloading files. after all that happens, an error message appears that says something like "powerpoint cannot be opened. please try again later or repair this software in the control panel" with no sort of error code. i then tried repairing it from control panel which claims to complete successfully. so i restart and try to install again and the same thing happens all over again. if i try opening word, excel, powerpoint or onenote the splash screen appears and does the same thing that i described powerpoint was doing. ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. i also tried installing the 60 day trial for office 2007 that came preloaded with the computer and then installing office 2010 over it. same thing happened.

I used XP Transfer Wizard to store my files (over 200GB) on external hard drive. Now I have Windows 7 machine and can't use them directly.I tried to use Virtual PC XP mode to import files but Virtual PC can only handle something around 136 GB virtual hard disk, so after 6 hours of transfer it stopped... I don't have the XP machine anymore - I'm stuck with Windows 7 and can't figure out how to move these files over..Is there a way to actually open all these Wizard IMGXXXXX.dat files and read them?

Had a major crash so bit the bullet and went for a fresh re-install of Win & Home 64 bit. Now it will only let me reinstall a few progs previously downloaded. It comes up with a message that says: The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running. Check to see wethere you need a 32 or 64 bit prog and contact the software publisher. These progs all downloaded and installed before. I have switched off UAC to no avail. It also seems to install freshly downloaded files.

I'm new and I just bought the 830 128GB, and am having some trouble installing windows on it.Basically, I have the GA-Z77-D3H motherboard and a 1tb HDD that I had for 5 month before I got this SSD today. My friend told me that I can install the OS on the SSD and still have the programs on the HDD running without reinstalling everything. First of all, is that correct? If so, how do I do it exactly? Install windows on the SSD and set it as first in boot sequence? I did that (I think) and it just gave me a brand new windows 7, with all the programs'es files on the E drive, but unable to run and start.

Some say the programs/games would run smoother because its in the same drive as Windows. Others say install stuff in another drive and let windows have a whole drive , so that windows can run smoother.
