Screen Seems Like It Isn't Dark Enough (not Brightness)
May 11, 2012
On my monitor it seems like everything is too bright, as in places that should be pitch black are a bit too light. For example: on my iPod, even with full brightness settings everything looks normal, but on my PC's monitor it just doesn't look right.I calibrated color and setting gamma way low really helped, but my contrast is set to full, and my brightness is 75.The strange thing: when I ran Crysis 1, it fixed the monitor color! So I know the darn thing is capable, I just don't know how to.When I closed down Crysis it went back to normal.
I am currently running Windows 7 RC1 and have noticed a behavioral change from XP which I would love to change.
In the NVIDIA control panel, there are 2 sets of settings for brightness:
1) Desktop color settings
2) Video color settings
In Windows XP, these would be completely independent. Thus for example, I could have my desktop dark while the videos could be bright and vivid.
Thus in XP:
Desktop Brightness = Desktop color settings
Video Brightness = Video color settings
In Windows 7, the OS only behaves this way when using Aero Basic. If I'm using the full Aero interface, I get the following behavior:
Desktop Brightness = Desktop color settings
Video Brightness = Desktop color settings + Video color settings
I would really love to have these control act independently on the full Aero interface. Is this possible? NVIDIA settings can obviously still distinguish the video because the video color settings still only apply to video, so I'm not sure why it behaves this way.
Yesterday i bought new grafic card geforce GT440 after my old 9800 GT stoped functioning normaly(memory failure). So here is the problem, when I start any program or do anything the computer the computer is functioning normally, but when I turn to desktop(which has black wallpaper) the monitor goes so dark that I can't see almost nothing. I tryed to find some power saving options in windows(win 7 pro, 64 bit) and on envidia control panel but i cannot find any cause for that dark screen. Even if I load a black page on my mozilla the monitor goes dark. As it cannot represent dark colors normally.
started recently, when I boot my PC, the screen shows message: no signal and screen stays dark. However, in the background W-7 is loading, but in order to get the video functioning, I must restart the PC, turn off the screen, wait till W-7 loads somewhat and (like after 10 sec.) turn the screen on and everything is OK.Monitor is NEW Video card too, I tried with a second one, same problem...My question is, is this W-7, main board, or something else related?
i use my computer for 5-6 hours and lately i lose the video connection ie the screen turn black. rebooting fixes it at least for a while, but in a short time its black again. today i turn the box on and no video at all, i tried changing the vga cable to no avail.
my laptop's screen keeps going dark after being on for only a few seconds. When the screen goes dark, I have to move my mouse around to get the screen to come back on which it usually does. After a few minutes of doing this, my screen stays on. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I do have McAfee anti-virus protection. I just recently ran a virus scan which came up clear of any viruses. I also tried adjusting when the screen goes dark
I have a 10 month old Acer 5820t laptop running win 7 home premium. About 6 weeks ago, the screen started going dark every few minutes and it has gotten worse. I can see the image faintly and by pressing the display brighten button can get it to come back or sometimes have to close and reopen lid it will come back. No external peripherals are connected. The Intel HD graphics card has the latest driver installed. The screen saver seems to work but the display will also go dark when the screeb saver is running.
I have installed the latest drivers, reinstalled the program, and all that jazz and the problem still persists. Pretty much when I minimize or exit from a game I play called EVE Online, my LCD remains really dark. Kind of as if someone turned down the brightness really low on the LCD. I've figured out 2 workarounds but they aren't fixes.
I simply log out and log back in and the display brightens to its usual brilliance or I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and it has the same effect. But once I maximize the game and minimize again the screen darkens once more. Oh and in-game everything is perfect, it's only once I go to the desktop. Any ideas? I personally think its a something wrong with the refresh rate but I ahve no clue as to how to fix that.
During the day, if we leave the computer alone, screen goes black, after a while, fans turn off. Wireless mouse wakes it up just fine. Fans startup before the screen is completely ready to go. During the night, the screen is dark, but the fans almost never stop. Why?
If I let the computer sit unused, the screen goes black, as most monitors would; however, the screen stays dark when I move the mouse or hit buttons or something. Similarly, if I close the lid of my laptop when its turned on, and then open the lid, the screen stays black. Not only that, but when I closed the lid of the laptop, the computer never turned off. It was still running.I reset the power options to default as well, so there is nothing wrong there. Perhaps I should also mention that the screen successfully turns off and on in safe mode?
edit: Just tried a system restore to two weeks ago and the system crashed. Both times.
Is there an util where I can make the fn key always "pressed" so I don't have to press it when I want to e.g. change the brightness of the screen? My laptop is a Presario CQ70.
But in the last couple months, once in a blue moon I couldn't change my screen brightness, and now in the last couple days it's gotten a whole lot worse. Usually, I can't change brightness either via my 'fn -/+' hotkeys or via the actual brightness slider in the power panel. A full reboot or simple hibernation then reboot both let me change brightness again. But the last couple days, restarting the computer just puts the brightness on either fully dimmed or fully bright, and I still can't change it.
This is an HP G60 laptop, and I've had windows seven for a year on it. Like I said above it only started a couple months ago then got worse this week, and what I've found on google so far was all for newly-updated-to-seven issues. My drivers all seem to be up to date according to the windows update driver function.
I have a problem with the screen brightness constantly dimming itself...it doesn`t matter which power setting I try or which route I go down...whenever re-setting,the tab just moves itself back down to the lowest setting...sometimes it stays bright for around an hour and then once again will revert. I have installed a new hard drive and so this is a new installation of windows 7 32 bit...but prior to this new hard drive I had the same problem.
Yesterday I noticed while I was playing Counter Strike, that the colors changed so did the brightness. I thought it was only the game, but I went on the internet and it was brighter than it was before.
So here is my problem. I have an Acer Aspire 4540 laptop that I recently repaired after laying in my closet with a broken display for some time. So I took it to a repair center and got my new 14' LED display installed. Everything on my laptop is working fine, even my screen is working fine. The only issue I've noticed is that when I try to increase or decrease my screen brightness it cycles between the max and min settings rather than dimming or brightening respectively.
Now, I know I've had this issue before but I can't remember if it was already like this before the screen broke. I have tried rolling back, uninstalling and reinstalling my drivers several times yet the issue is still there.
Im running on Windows 7 Ultimate x86 and my graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD4200.
I know this is a small issue but I need to fix it since I spend a lot of time in front of my laptop.
I just bought a new Dell N311z I've noticed that when the brightness of my screen is anywhere between maximum and minimum it automatically decreases or increases on will, without me doing anything.
I've also noticed that when the background on the LCD is of a darker colour the brightness decreases and when it's a lighter background the brightness increases itself.
I've tried everything from disabling the ambient light sensor to calling up Dell customer care and after having spent 3 hours on doing what they made me do it still hasn't fixed my problem. I reset the laptop to the factory settings, i reinstalled all the drivers as well.
I have a Dell N311z. Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
I installed Windows 7 this week on my notebook Dell XPS M1710.
Everything is good working, except one thing :
When I close the screen, so the notebook go hibernating, and then I reopen it, the notebook leave the hibernating mode, and here the screen goes dark, the brightness is very low, despite the brightness setting is at max. The only solution is to reboot the notebook.
So now I can't use hibernating mode, I have to always shutdown the notebook.
I just formatted my entire laptop (Samsung RV511) due to a bug that was in the system my antivirus could not detect or the help of system restore would not get rid of either. My previous 2 laptops came with recovery discs but the samsung had only come with the windows 7. I had installed Windows 7 and after doing so, checked everything out. I realized that Samsung has many specific programs and drivers that come with their computers and in the process of formatting, I had deleted everything. My computer is unable to connect to the Internet and I can't even change the brightness of the screen anymore.
Lately my OS seems to have some kind of problem. As i'm surfing with my browser (Chrome), sometimes out of nowhere (or usually when i try to save a picture with right click>save as) the frames of another window that i have open pop-up on the screen.Like it's kinda bringing it forth but not quite. From what i've experienced this happens with my utorrent window or windows of the Windows 7 explorer.I mean not the ie browser. The one you use to explore your system files etc. Here's how it looks like.I have a dark windows background open on my Chrome, so that it's clearly visible.
when i upload a video to Internet the color and brightness turn out to be really dark-ish. i use fraps and want to directly upload my videos to Internet. when it's done uploading and processing the video turns out be extremely dark. it looks really bad without editing it but i don't want to edit because my computer won't take it anymore. should i adjust something in my monitor's colors and brightness? i have the amd vision control panel so i'll try to toggle around. i have another computer and the same version of fraps but the videos turn out to be exactly as plaid in windows media player.
I recently built a new pc and installed seven as my os. I couldn't help but automatically notice that the screen dims to darker images... I have never had this problem before with my monitor. I knew it had to be a seven feature.. Yet I can't disable it... I've tried hardware device options and power saving options... This is a stupid feature... Why would you want to Dim the screen on an already dark image....I cannot play certain games because it gets way to dark to see anything.
I built a new PC about a month ago. BioStar A880GU3 and an AMD Athlon II X3 455 CPU. Also running Windows 7.
I set up two monitors and have them set to extend. Everything has been great up until about a few days ago. One morning I turned the PC on and my 2nd display was totally black. It was turned on and Windows was detecting it but I couldn't see anything. I drug a tab from Firefox over to the monitor and dropped it and the screen started flickering and eventually came on. Everything was cool for the next two days.
A few days later, it happened again. This time, I could faintly see that the screen was on just very dark because I could see the outlines of the Firefox window I drug over there. Now it happens every time I turn the PC on. It eventually stats flickering and comes on on it's own and stays on until I shut the PC off again.
I also can't even see the monitor's menu when I press the menu button on it. Does this sound like an issue somewhere in Windows, or just a failing monitor? It's a bunch of years old and was sitting in my basement for over a year until I built this new PC. I'm just curious because it worked fine for weeks after I started using it again.
I am using the system spec as shown in the signature. Both monitors are connected to a single ATI 6870HD. The Dell U2311H is connected to the card via minidisplay-display port while the LG M227WD is connected via the DVI cable. The problematic monitor is the monitor over the display port (Dell). The monitor goes black randomly, sometimes during I play games. Sometimes it goes black more than few seconds, and I get a message on the screen saying power down as there is no reception from the display port.
I have updated the latest drivers, but still this problem persists. A
