I want to run a small VBS script on startup, before the Windows selection screen appears. So I found out about the Startup scripts in Group Policy and tried adding the VBS script, or a batch file that calls cscript with the VBS file to get the output to console.However, neither solution actually displays anything during startup, at any point until the logon screen.It should be noted that the script simply prints out the drive letters used.

I recently upgraded my laptop (a Lenovo T60p, C2D T7200 proc, 2GB RAM, ATI X1400) with both a new SSD (an OCZ Vertex 60 GB) and Windows 7 Pro x64. Performance and stability has been terrific. Especially that sub-30-second boot time!
Initially, I had desktop composition disabled, so that Windows 7 was running without the Desktop Windows Manager. I just recently enabled it when I discovered that it's pretty damn sexy, and had little impact on battery life (if anything, it seems to have gotten better).
However, now my laptop takes much longer to boot - about an additional 30 seconds or so following the Windows login screen. When I disable DWM, it goes back to booting quickly. Now I realize you can't get something for nothing, but 30 seconds for a single process? A fairly lightweight process that you can enable instantly in the desktop environment? My hunch is that that just isn't right - something is interacting badly. Thus my questions are:
1. Does anyone know if this is normal behavior for DWM?
2. Is there anything I can do to address this?
3. Or, is there a good forum/online resource where I could post this (rather esoteric) question?
New laptop with Windows 7 Pro 64 and I am transferring stuff over from the dying Windows 7 Starter netbook.On the netbook I had seven Shortcuts in the Startup Folder and they all launched fine at Boot up. I copied them to the Windows 7 Pro Startup and one of them does not run. I can double click the Shortcut manually and it launches fine, just not during the Boot up.The program is SpeedFan (SF). I have tried using various options in the Compatibility Tab for SF and I have UAC set to Off for Admin boots. Nothing allows SF to launch during the Boot up.

So, upon receiving a new Asus G53SW-XN1 laptop, I promptly put in a smallish SSD to serve as a Windows/common apps drive, moving the HDD to the other hard drive slot.
Fresh install of Windows 7, etc. At the moment, Windows will not boot up - no splash screen, no opportunity for Safe Mode, etc. But Windows is perfectly happy to run - if I boot off a CD, then hit 'Restart', everything starts up fine. The Repair Windows Installation option on the CD sees the Windows installation okay, and when asked to repair says 'no problems are found', and happily reboots. Some sort of MBR/partition issue that the Repair doesn't detect?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI happened to run across this forum while searching for answers to my computer troubles through Google.Here's the issue, my laptop is no more then a year old. It's a Dell Model N5040 running Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1. For the past week or so my computer has been running increasingly slower, and i cannot for the life of me figure out why.I am only using 36gb of a 446gb hard drive, I have 4gb of ram and have run a virus scan, disk cleanup, and a disk defrag.. It does not run slower while doing certain things infact it seems to selectively slow down. I attempted to complete a disk check of my C drive. This has found a few bad sectors which have been either removed during the check or manually however after a week of attempting to run the disk check I have yet to fully complete a single check. It will freeze at some point on every step and never recover.
I use Trend Micro Titanium as my virus protector and I have even attempted to use their house call software to check if maybe my virus softare was compromised I have used Spybot search and destroy and CCleaner in an attempt to clear up any clutter and/or spy/malware. My only conclusion is that maybe some Windows driver was deleted by mistake through CCleaner. I have attempted to start my computer in safe mode however even this cannot be completed, it freezes and never recovers.Nevertheless, I am at an impass i am unsure on where I go from here and would obviously prefer to fix this myself rather then let some self proclaimed "tech" at a shady I.T. company tell me i need a new computer because they cant figure it out either.

These are correct WS670/4GB PC3200 EEC registered modules as recommended.*memory fan is installed*3 SCSI drives with Adaptec 7901 RAID controller.I've got a dual boot setup, and the system boots and runs fine from the alternate OS (Win XP x64) just fine. The BIOS lists the memory as installed and shows no errors or problems. A memory test indicates that the memory is okay. When I try to do a boot repair from Win7, the Win7 OS is not listed and installing the correct RAID and SCSI drivers from the repair window does not make it visible. The partition is not, in fact, visible from the repair tool. When I put the old memory back in (4 x 512mb SIMMS in slots 1,2,3,4) the system boots and runs fine with Windows 7. What's up with this?

I get a screen with six line that all have vista in them and am unable to do anything in that screen. View 1 Replies View Relatedive been getting BSODs and finally figured out how to debug it with WinDbg (x86) and set the symbols for windows but i cant read the text. ive tried reinstalling my GPU and Java but no luck. when i try to run intel driver update utility as soon as i run it i get a BSOD ive got the minidump here if anyone knows how to read it, so here you go.

I'm just installed windows 7 on my 2009 imac through bootcamp. However there are some problems. Ive noticed when i try to play something on windows media player it will tell me that my computer is running low on memory and to close some windows. Also games run poorly if at all. I suspect its a driver issue but have gone through all the auto updates etc.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAs I shutdown/restart my laptop, I notice it switches to a secondary desktop that has been running programs.A good example would be trying to open my Task Manager, I can Ctrl-Alt-Del and it will allow me to open Task Manager - however when I click on Task Manager, it opens on the Desktop running in the background. I can't even access the Desktop in the background, it only shows up as I'm shutting down - closing programs that I tried opening awhile ago.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running into this issue of having complete access to one PC running windows 7 from another one that is also running windows 7. One of the PC's is a windows 7 pro 32 bit and the other is window 7 ultimate 64 bit. I have had them setup with public and dedicated folder sharing. But from time to time I find that a file I want to get off one or the other was not saved to a shared folder. I have been looking for a way to allow complete access from one PC to other one (going both directions). I use 2 PC all the times and it really depends on where I am in the house as to what one I am using as one is laptop and the other is a desktop. They are both on the same network. It is just one of the strange things that I have not been able to find a way to get complete file access without the use of software like Teamviewer or others like it.What I would like to do it just go to the network location in the windows explore to get the files I want from the other PC.

If I do not do this a message saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.." comes up, and just keeps popping up regardless of what I press! I would try using my boot disk but for the life of me I can't find it, and as windows 7 was already installed on this computer when we got it 3 year ago, I can't accurately recall if it came with one!I am no expert on BIOS, but I have read other problems similar to this one, and know that if I don't have the boot disk or the OS disk, I will need to know that at least.I am curious if the (Hard drive) is the issue. The BIOS tells me that anything in parentheses is disabled from corresponding type menu.

However, when I leave it on overnight (usually when it is downloading something big), when I wake up in the morning I am greeted with a black screen with the words:"Reboot and select proper boot device or Insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"When this happens I simply press the power button a few seconds to turn it off, then turn it on again and it boots normally. (pressing a key only results in the message being repeated)What infuriates me is that it only ever happens when I leave it on overnight so I don't know when and how exactly it occurs but it almost always does. Like I said earler, it never does this when I am using it as it works fine otherwise. It just won't stay on overnight when I need it to.

When I logged on to my windows 7 computer it was slow and then I noticed that the clock and date were wrong. I opened the task manager and found that the cpu was running at 100%. After using bleepingcompter website to find that there was a malware I also went through the startup menu and removed unwanted items. I also uninstalled Itunes which was the last program installed on compter. Right now I have malware software called Malwarebytes. I am doing a full scan its been running for and hour and a half. I just checked and the cpu is still running at 100%. The only thing I did not remove was the lastest windows updates.

Similar to like when you are playing an online game and you experience lag and bounce forward several spots or something like that. Resources are available and cpu is not running high under load. Checked drivers and they are up to date.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I have been trying to get my computer running for a few days now. At first it wasn't booting at all, it would be a black screen with a blinking cursor. I have cleared cmos a few times, turned psu off, drained charge from psu, turned psu back on and got it working that way for about 10 minutes, then it crashed. Ever since then I can't get it to get running again. I think it says something about "fatal error" and then goes on telling me to boot into safe mode to remove any new hardware. Is it a hardware problem I'm having? If so, I'm screwed, too broke The best I can get is the screen where it says run windows normally or run in safe mode. But it will just crash on either option I pick. And when I try to run from the dvd drive with my windows 7 disc it's just a black screen with a blinking cursor. I'm not sure what to do...ugh I feel like it's something really simple to fix. I left my computer sitting for a few months and havn't tried to boot it until recently, so I don't remember if I put any updates on it or not.

When I attempted to re-install, I received the error message that "the windows installer service could not be accessed." It was listed as running in the services applet of administrator tools, but would not work.While then exploring the system, I found other things that wouldn't work--for example, audio, which is what put me on to the same problem last May--and others. I got many "class not registered" errors. SFC won't run. When booting to the CD and running SFC, I got the old message about a pending repair, although I can find no trace of one. Ran malware scanners, of course, and the system came clean. Clean boot was not useful.The most significant thing I have found, which is probably at the root of this, is that in task manager, there are no instances of svchost running, unlike the usual ten or fifteen that normally run.I had this problem in May, and ended up doing a complete re-install of Windows 7 Home Premium. I would like to avoid going through that again. It's difficult with visual impairment. There is one potential similarity to now and the situaton in May, other than the symptoms described above. In May, I had tried installing a new nvidia card, which Windows wouldn't recognize, so I took it out and when I booted back to Windows, the above symptoms appeared. Yesterday, I saw in event viewer a dcom error, which traces back to the nvidia updatus "user."
