I just got a new computer and this is my first experience with Windows7 and in Disk Fragmenter the recovery drive is fragmented 2% (it wasnt earlier) and if I click analyze or defrag the screen just flickers and ignores me

After a system recovery last October on my Hewlett Packard PC due to some software causing blue screens, I have just discovered after defragging my main C drive, I have noticed that the "D" partition which holds all the necessary recovery info is just 2% defragmented. As nothing is written to this part of the disc I wonder how this has happened, unless it has always been like that. Usually when I do a recovery, I immediately turn off the "auto-schedule defrag" program so I can do it whenever I wish. But this time I didn't and obviously the auto-defrag has scanned that part of the drive at one time and reported a 2% fragmentation. It may well have been made like that! Or would it be worth a quick defrag just to get everything in order? The OS is Windows 7, and it is a single 640Gb hard disc.
View 4 Replies View Relatedperiodically i run TuneUp 1-Click Maintenance. from day one, the D drive is labeled as the HP Recovery drive shows 92.56 percent fragmentation (heavily fragmented). I Googled this problem and it appears that this is somewhat normal and i should not defrag. when i used TuneUp 1-Click, in order to fix other problems shown, it wants to also defrag that D drive. is there a way to run TuneUp 1-Click so that it doesn't "see" the D Drive?

I do have a recent Windows-created System Image on a USB-Network drive, however all attempts at utilizing such have been unsuccessful. After navigating to the System Image Restore function from either my repair CD, or my OEM Windows CD, then selecting Search for image on the network function, then entering the full network address [\readyshareusb_storagelarrydelldesktopbackupwindowsimagebackupdell_desktopackup 2012-11-18 170013], then entering my network credentials, the system seems to search the location, but returns me to a blank "select the location of the backup you want to restore" screen.
Related problem... thinking the C-drive was toast, and knowing I have an OEM Windows-7 CD, I bought a new 3-TB drive. Installed the drive, attempted to do a clean-fresh system install on the new drive, and Win-7 tells me it can not install windows because of some hardware incompatibility issue. Since nothing was changed from the previously working Win-7 installation on this system, except the new 3TB hard drive..
I can either go with the backup system image, or clean install of Win-7 to the new drive to get me back up an running. I would actually prefer to install the backup image to the NEW drive, if possible.
I installed 7 on my Dell laptop that has no CD-ROM drive. I created a partition (D and set it to Active, installed from that partition, doing a quick format over Vista (C.
All was fine and dandy, but I was getting some boot option, I'm assuming because the Active drive had the install files on it. No problem, I'll set the C: partition to Active.
Reboot, should go away right? Wrong. "Bootmgr is missing."
No problem, there has to be a way to fix this. I'll put the CD in and recover... Or not!
What I have is a 2 gig USB thumbdrive, is there anyway to fix this problem with that? If not, what are my options.

I made recovery discs from the tablet before installing Windows 8 on it, which runs great. What I would like to do, if possible, is to use those Windows 7 restore discs and restore them to an external hard drive and be able to boot from it and run the original Windows 7 that came preinstalled. The reason I am wanting to do this, as there were some programs, drivers, and other things that I cannot download from Acer or retrieve from the restore discs, and can only access from the OS if it is actually running.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy HP laptop HD crashed, am trying to replace it with a Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD. I do not have Windows installation disks, only have Windows Recovery Disks. All installation instructions I have found for SSD's is for cloning, which I cannot do since the HD is deadI have installed the SSD, booted into BIOS, this simple BIOS version doesn't allow me to change anything on the HD, but it does recognize it and let me do a HD test, so it does recognize the SSD. I then put the Windows Recovery disk in the CD drive, attempted to boot up, but the CD drive just spins and spins but never boots up. I thought the CD drive might be bad, so I tried an external USB CD drive with the Recovery disk, but it does the same (just spins). I even got a new Windows 7 installation disk (from another PC) to see if it will boot from it, but get nothing but a spinning CD I have not done anything yet to the HyperX SSD, haved not formatted or partitioned it.I thought this would be done by Recovery on the OS installationThe BIOS is set up to first boot from the CD drive, so the boot order is not the issue.

I want to access the command prompt to try some potential solutions that I have read about on the internet. I have made a Windows 7 recovery disk using my other acer laptop which also has Windows 7 installed. When I use the recovery disk and it has loaded the files etc it just brings up a black screen and the cursor. I tried booting my acer laptop from the recovery disk and it worked fine. why I am getting the 'disk read error - hit ctrl, alt and delete to restart' message?

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is being used on PSP (File System is FAT32, was formatted on PSP itself) and had 26% fragmentation (6'6gb size of it). After copying all stuff I wanted to it (leaving 22% space) left all this fragmentation so decided to do a normal defrag (using defragler) since its going to need only 1 time as i dont plan to delete that stuff or replace it.
What is your opinion about if I could have gained any little performance on the memory stick doing this or not? Also didn't check yet if CCleaner can delete free space on this memory stick or not (not sure if this memory sticks store data like an HDD do so). Just doing a normal defrag on this memory stick took some good hours.
My desktop PC has a problem about recovery. The problem is my recovery partition was 20GB out of 30GB at first (use window 7, 64 bit, ultimate), but after some days it became about 25Gb out of 30GB. And it becomes more and more day by day.
Anybody know why it happened and how to fix it?
My dad and I are working together trying to fix these problems on his HP Pavilion P6277c Win7 machine. We finally decided that a complete wipe and reinstallation of the OS is the only way to go. It was so fargone that we had to use Knoppix just to back up files to an external drive. (I don't know how it got this way; I can only guess a bad driver installation because it seems like it was after a printer driver was installed that this started.)But there are three recovery disks, and the first one is blank. He made the three disks when he got the computer, I'm guessing using HP's automated program, and when we tried to start the reinstallation, the first disk is just nothing. We put it in another computer and it said "Blank medium."
(I'm going to use this opportunity to vent, because it's infuriating to me that HP refuses to provide a normal reinstallation disk, and instead uses these "Recovery" disks that don't work and include the same bloatware that comes with it. Ok, now I'm back to being civil.)We have the Windows 7 install disk for my computer because it's custom-built and I bought the license separately, but it's the OEM copy from Newegg and we really don't know if the license stuff is going to let us install on another computer. And that won't include the drivers. It's a possible solution that we're going to try, but it's not optimal in my opinion
I was playing around with Wbadmin from the cmd of my recovery disc. Whilst it works perfectly from the cmd in the running system, I could not get it to work from the cmd of a recovery or an installation DVD.I thought that would be neat to image a defunct system so that the guys could save their data from the imaged VHD.The command I used is:WBADMIN START BACKUP -backupTarget:f: -include:c: Where 'f' is the disk to where you image.If you have a boring moment and want to try it on your box, I would be interested if anybody could make it to work. So i did, now i keep getting "recovery c disk space low" error. I have read through some of the suggestions on disk clean up but and follow the instructions but its not working. View 4 Replies View RelatedHave a neighbor who has an HP Pavilion dv4 running Win 7. The warranty is only 1 yr. and, of course, the HDD went belly up at <2 years. HP sent him recovery disks for both Win 7 (64-bit) and the recovery driver disk. The Windows recovery disks appear to work fine; took over 1.5 hours to put the system back, but when he puts the driver disk in (and I tried this, too), the head sounds like it's repeatedly searching for something, can't find it, so after 2-3 minutes, just stops. I then told it to "skip" the driver disk and restart.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to fix my mums laptop for her, it's an Asus X5DIJ operating on windows 7, she has only had it a few weeks but her trial month of anti virus had run out and she was having a few probs with it so I tried to restore it to an earlier point as i thought she might have a virus, it took over an hour to do this and appeared to have frozen so i switched the power button off!!!! i now realise that was a big mistake as when it restarted i was getting a whole load of error message with missing .dll files and not being able to do a lot of things so i tried undoing the restore but it wouldn't allow it as it said restore was still running, i also tried a different restore point but it wouldn't allow that either... I then tried the repair computer options at the boot menu but it didn't work either so I thought i might as well just restore it to factory settings as she hadn't had it long enough to have put much on it anyway.... the recovery disk gets to 32% and then spits the disk out with this message Failed to restore disk from the Asus Recovery DVD Error code is :-3 I have tried it a few times and this is what happens each time, i have also tried just putting the next disk in (3rd out of 4) but it just reboots and wants to start the whole process again.I have the number to call asus support but they are closed today, also the recovery disks are not supplied by the manufacturer but instead on initial start up you are asked to make your own but i didn't do that as my cousin has the exact same laptop so I used his disks..

I have a bootable usb drive with the windows installation disk that I want to use to run chkdsk on the drive. When I start the computer I get the usual "windows loading files" with grey status bar then the "starting windows" splash screen. Then the screen goes black and I can hear the mechanical drive spinning in my case.

I recently purchaced a new notebook, shipped with Windows 7 64-bit HP. I need 32-bit in order to run certain programs, so I used my Windows 7 Ult DVD and installed it on this laptop. I did not delete the recovery partition that was already on the drive, but I re-installed my own Windows 7 on the partition with the pre-installed Windows 7. This was a mistake... I lack a lot of drivers and pre-compiled software that is not available for download from the manufactor. So, I hope there is a way to make the recovery disk bootable, so I can boot from it in order to respawn the pre-installed Windows 7.
