Read / Write Vista Partition
Jan 16, 2009
I have recently installed 7 and made my Vista partition visible. However, I am unable to write to the partition. Ex) I am able to view a text file on the Vista partition while running 7, but I am not able to modify the text file. Etc with other files. Does anyone have a solution to this?

What's the best type of DVD to use for read-only and read/write applications? I'm a little out-of-date on this, haven't bought any in awhile. I remember things like DVD-R/RW and DVD+RW and such. I have a new machine running Win7, and an older laptop running XP.

I can't read or write discs. I'm using Windows Media Player to burn some music to a CD and it gets to 30% on the second track and the disc stops spinning and I get an error saying the drive is busy. I can erase the discs, but I can't burn them or read them.
There is as far as I can see, no errors on the disc drive itself.
Using:
Dell Inspiron 1545
3GB RAM
Optiarc DVD+RW AD-7585H

OK so since I have installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 on this computer ( it is the first operating system installed on it) I can not write any DVDs .A strange fact is that I can write and read CDs and also read DVDs, but not every time.I got an original CD Album and it's still not recognized by the PC for example, and this happens to many audio CDs.I tried many registry tricks and stuff like that but in vain. The computer is new, bought it one month ago. DVD+RW - Sony Optiaric AD-7260SI also tired to resolve the problem with FixIt but it was also useless.I kept getting the message: "The disc in drive [E:] is not detected, or is not supported"

I have 4gb and 16gb kingston DT 101 usb....both had slow read & write speeds on fat32(defulat format)..
-write speed 4-6mb/sec
-read speed 25mb/sec appx
When i format it to NTFS, it writes initially at 100mb/s and then suddenly slows down to appx 15-20mb/s... and sometimes it gets stuck somwhere in the middle or on 99% and when i cancel it it start cancelling but doesnt end up, and end ups by removing usb or by logging off... when i copy from usb to harddisk in ntfs format, its working f9...
(I have dell inspiron n5520 core i5, 4gb ram, with win 7 ultimate 64bit... my laptop has usb 3.0 ports (all 4 ports).... i have updated drivers and windows... i have also set my usb to better performance from device manager... there is no problem sign in device manager)

When attempting to write to any USB drive I have connected (including a 1GB USB key and a 1TB Eagle Consus S-ATA Raid0) I initially see the transfer going very quickly as Windows 7 caches the transfer. The speed initially goes to 60MB/s and then the bar stops moving. If I wait, the transfer never completes with a 1GB test file.
I cannot cancel the transfer, since it says Cancelling but never completes. Only a reboot or disconnecting my drive stops the transfer process. While attempting to transfer, any attempt to read from the drive stalls as well.
Read speed is normal. I can access files on the drive, and copy from the USB -> Windows 7 at full speed.
Here are the things I have done to fix the problem:
1) Set the drive to Performance Mode to enable write caching.
2) Uninstalled and re-installed the USB Root Controller and Intel USB Controller devices.
3) Upgraded to the latest Intel Device Drivers.
4) Ensured that my USB ports are 2.0, and that I am connected to the rear powered USB outlets.
5) Installed the Windows 7 hotfix intended for NVIDIA chipsets with 4GB RAM (does not apply to me, but tried anyways).
6) Tried formatting in 16K block sizes instead of 4K or 8K.
When I connect either USB device to my Macbook Pro, with NTFS drivers installed, my read and write speed are normal. For that reason, I know that the problem is not with my USB drives.
Tonite I will try an Ubuntu live CD to see if I can get full speed write with the exact same hardware that Windows 7 is using, to rule out that this is somehow a hardware issue.

I have 2 drives (connected one at a time to try and sort this issue) SONY AD-7260S and a LITE-ON
Now from upgarding to XP to 7 I had no issues until now... When inserting Disc (Blank or Data Files) the DVD Drive will hang and not ask what to do with the Disk and when I try to Burn the disc it will say cannot write to drive or just sit there doing nothing
Both these drives worked flawlessly with XP and only way to get the drive to recognise half the time with Windows 7 is to restart PC to either get it to show in Device Manager or press eject when booting to get the disk inside out.
Both drives are Sata and are only a few months old (not burned much and work exceeelnet on another xp machine)

How can I reorganize / read / write / move / unlock and basically do whatever the heck I want with my files and folders in Win7? It is my computer, I am the only user, and yet when I create a folder, the stupid Windows locks it and won't let me save stuff in the folder, or access stuff in the folder, etc, etc. What do I have to do to get back control of my computer?

how to re-write the information ( what and where) so that I can access the hidden partition on a laptop running Vista so we can put the system on again. I ask because Alt+F10 no longer worksIT DID work a few days ago, and we put Vista back on because the machine had been infected with malware which shut off all the services. So, restored, all sorted and the machine went back to my son working fine, but then a couple of days later, Service Pack 1 tried to download and install via Windows Updates, and kept on trying and trying, without completing. My son brought the machine back because he could not get it to reboot, and we found the system was corrupt so that we could not repair even after chkdsk.

I got a disk drive with 3 partitions...
1 - vista 64 (50GB)
2 - win 7 64 (30GB)
3 - data (80GB)
I want to move win 7 installation to vista partition and extend partition 3 with freed partition 2.
-I though to do this
-Backup win 7 to external drive
-boot from cd installation
-choose to restore win 7 in partition 1
-After it boots correctly, resize partition 3 adding partition 2.
I realized that boot files are in partition 1, when I tried in windows 7 to backup system (partition 2) it want sto backup full partition 1, because it's part of system and partition 1 is considered critical.
Any procedure to accomplish this?

I have this Toshiba 640Gb HDD. I partitioned it into three logical drives. When I inserted the hdd in my xp, one drive cannot be read. Later when I used again the hdd in 7, it says that one of the drives needs to be formatted (the one that can't be read by xp). I did so but I noticed that the drive letter changed. Series of switching between the two OS, the drive's letter continues to change upon formatting. Then to arrange again the drive letters in their alpha list, I used Easeus Partition Master to change the letters of the partitions back as F, G, and H. After the process, when I inserted the hdd, it took significant amount of time for the drive to be read.
Is there any way to revert and restore the drive letters of the system? I've tried to restore from backup but to no avail.

But after that i found a problem, when i installed windows on D he changed the permissions on my files so i couldn't access them anymore.I managed to restore the permissions of my files but there remained one problem that is disturbing me: i can't copy or create any file anything on my D: partition because i get a message "Please remove the write protection!" or "Error 0x80070522

I just purchased Windows 7 Home Premium to upgrade it from Windows Vista Home Premium, and when I popped in the disc, it does not show up! I tried a different disk, and yes it worked. I also tried putting the Windows 7 disk into my friends computer, and it showed up. I have tried many different things, and nothing works. I've tried re installing the driver, updating it, and several different fixing programs.

I have a pair of WD 500GB drives in Raid0 array with the resulting >900Gb partitioned such :
C: Priamry 100Gb - Windows 7 64bit
D: Primary 80 GB - Windows 7 32bit
E: Primary 40GB - Windows 7 32bit
R: Secondary Logical - 355GB - Data
Z: Secondary Logical - 355GB - Data
Using DualBootPro to boot between the various OS Both the Windows 7 32 bit installations give me no problems whatsoever, however, intermitantly when booting into the Windows 7 64 installation sometimes the R drive will appear as read only, or the Z drive will appear as read only or they are both OK.This is more an inconvenience than a major disassater, as a reboot normally resolves the issue. This appears to be cmpletely random, as it does not happen specifically after a boot into either of the Windows 7 32 installtions, but can occur even after a previous successful boot of the Windows 7 64 installation.

I completed upgrading my DELL notebook to Windows 7 from Vista. This was part of the W7 promo that started this summer. DELL sent me the upgrade discs. I'm wondering now since I'm using W7 is there any need for the old recovery partition? Should I delete the partition? I highly doubt I'd be returning to Vista any time soon.

I'm trying to dual boot to get vista and Windows 7, but my vista won't give me more than 300mb space on my second partition. I saw an old guid to get past it, but it told me to delete all my hibernation files and recovery files and for about 50% of the comments that didnt work. My question is: Is it safe to delete those files or is there a newer and more effective guide or should i just install Windows 7 on the same partition as vista`?

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on an HP DV6-1253cl notebook from a USB flash drive and running into problems that are preventing the install. (Note: It's not the rig that is in my system specs.)
When I try and clean install Windows 7 64-bit over the existing Vista system partition (C), I get the following error.
"Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information."
Thing is, setup shows that partition as well as the HP recovery partition and an external USB drive that is also connected to this notebook and offers all of those as choices for installing Windows 7 onto.
Can anyone help me figure out why Windows 7 won't install on the existing Vista C partition and tell me how to get it to install?

I'm fixing my friends laptop and for some reason windows has gone haywire. Its a sony laptop so I could use the recovery partition and recover vista. The other option would be to go the campus computer store and buy a copy of windows 7 for $20. My reason for consider buying windows 7 is that is may provide a boost in the battery and most importantly, I think the laptop will run alot smoother with windows 7.
So should I get my friend to buy windows 7 or should I just recover vista?
