Re Partition Trouble Sign Of Bad Drive
Aug 5, 2012
First start with explaining that I'm new to the forum and to some of the more in depth setup processes. I am currently trying to re-partition my hard drive in order to setup a dual boot. I have just installed windows 7 on the computer, not carrying over anything from the old OS.When I open computer management, it states that of the total 76,000 MB's of the single existing partition, only 1,413 MB's is available to be shrunk by.This is an insufficient amount for the second partition I require for the dual boot.Additionally, when I take a different approach and try to re partition from with in the OS that I am trying to dual boot with, it gives me a warning that the program (gparted) detected that the disk has at least 51 bad sectors when I unmount it.

My goal is to run a Windows 7/Windows 7 dual boot system with one installation for day to day operations (MAIN) and then second installation strictly for gaming (GAMER).
I have successfully installed Windows 7 twice. During clean install i created 30GB partition (C: ) and put MAIN there. No problems. I loaded that up and from within Disk Management created a second partition on the same physical drive and named it (D: ).
I booted from the Windows 7 install DVD and then installed GAMER to the (D: ) partition. No problems. I am able to boot into each installation (MAIN and GAMER) from the boot manager without any troubles.
When I boot into the MAIN installation, the system path/partition is (C: ) and the os files for the second installation, GAMER, can be seen on (D: ) just fine.
However, when i boot into the GAMER installation, its system path is also (C: ) and the partition for MAIN somehow got renamed to (G: )
I would like it so that when I boot into MAIN (which was installed to C: ), that partition stays named (C: ) and when i boot into GAMER (which was installed to D: ), that partition stays named (D: ). Eventhough both installations see themselves as (C: ) when i boot into them, it does not seem to cause any problems.
So how should I do my second Windows 7 installation to a partition named (D: ) and force it to keep that name when i boot into it?

I created a 20gb partition on my external hard drive and no longer require the partition. It is currently unallocated space so I want to format it into NFTS. Using computer management the partition was selected and and I went through the steps to format but i keep on getting an error message saying there is not enough space on the disk to complete this operation.

I installed Ubuntu on my computer a few months ago and created another partition for it on my 1TB hard drive. I didn't really care for Ubuntu so I decided to delete the partition it was on. That might have been a mistake. Well, now there's 87.68GB of free space on my hard disk that I can't use and I don't know how to add it back to my c: partition.
There was another post about this a couple years ago, but I don't understand the instructions and am not actually sure if it worked. Can someone explain how to do this, please? I'm not completely computer illiterate, but I'm not familiar with partitioning disks. It was just the one time with Ubuntu.

I have a generic System 7 64 bit system with a 1 TB SATA drive. It has one hard drive which I have partitioned into 4 partitions, with C: being where I put all the system software. The board has mulitple SATA ports.Change considered: cloning the C: partition onto a new SSD so that I can get the performance boost of an SSD. There are some heat problems with existing hard drive so I probably need to change it out, so I would also like to clone the D:, E:, and F: partitions to a new hard drive.I have cloned a single physical drive to another physical drive, and the software (Ghost, or the like) usually handles it ok, so that all I need to do is adjust some partition sizes, and then disconnect the old hard drive and everyting is good. This includes cloning a single hard drive with multiple partitions to being cloned to a new single hard drive with identical numbers of partitions.Compared to my prior experience, is there something different about cloning one partition only vs cloning the whole drive. My proposed plan is:
1) Install SSD
2) clone C: to SSD only
3) clone D: E: F: of old drive to new drive.
4) remove old drive.

I have loaded XP on my other pc like 3 times. The first time it lasted a while then started getting blue screens. Reloaded again, same thing. I recently tried again, but this time the system went to blue screen 3 days later. I did notice that after the last MS windows update was finished, it wanted a restart, then after the restart, it would never boot to the OS.
The pc just starts up and goes to the windows boot/splash screen and just keeps repeating itself. I am not sure what to do at this point. Could this be a sign of a bad HDD, or cd-rom drive, maybe the mo-bo?
Would be greatly appreciated if someone could help me with this problem! I do apologize if I should have posted this elsewhere, but am just desperate to get this pc running proper!

For a couple of weeks now, I've had these windows updates that wouldn't finish installing. I've been trying the recommended solutions that I could find but nothing really helps.
I've tried repairing the Microsoft .NET framework but it fails to repair for some unknown reason.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled it both manually and through windows updater, both failed.

So I recently built my first computer, and I was so excited it was going great, I installed all my drivers, and downloaded some of the software, steam, itunes etc. Anyway I will try to break this down to make this easier to follow,I stepped away while it was downloading LoL ,-I came back to see a screen saying Windows could not repair this computer automatically ,I performed some of the options, reverting to an earlier state, and even using the repair tool on windows itself,I then attempted to reinstall windows entirely, and I would just move some key files over from the Windows.old file,Instead my computer asked me to select which windows I wanted to run, after trying them both neither worked,-after surfing the internet, so I used the command prompt to clear my hard drive, I had figured I would just have to reinstall a few drivers and download some stuff no big deal, but instead my computer still prompts me to select one of two windows to run, again neither working, now installing off of the disk doesn't even finish

If your having an issue installing programs where you get the error, "windows installer has stopped working", go into your action center (the flag icon in the lower right corner of your task bar), click "change action center settings", then click "customer experience improvement program settings". Once in the settings, select "No, I do not wish to participate" and save your settings.

I'm having a strange problem with my mouse. This is the first wireless mouse I have ever used. At first I thought is was my mouse that was acting up. Now I am pretty sure it is my USB ports in the rear of the computer.
My problem is my mouse pointer stops moving constantly. It resembles a trashy ball mouse the way it stops moving with the exception that my pointer suddenly catches up with where it needs to be. During all this time I was considering the possibilities that it could be my mouse or a glitch in windows 7 build 7229.
A few nights ago for the first time my mouse quit responding. I was forced to check it out and try a different port. Non of the rear ports seem to work so I tried a front port. I did not have any trouble with the mouse on the front port. After a few hours I tried a different rear port and after a while the same thing started again. Now for the second time switching back to the front port without any problems.
I am curious if anyone else has had this problem. What do you think it could be?I realize this could be fixed in the Retail versions of Windows 7?
Maybe a driver update is needed.
Does this sound like a problem with the USB chip?
Could there be interference with my wireless network adapter?
I'm not really sure where to start diagnostics. I don't really want to pull my adapter if I can get out of it. What do you guys think?

I have a Canon 3200F scanner which I can't get working on 7 RC 32-bit.
I have downloaded the driver from Canon, installed it and nothing really happened. I then discovered that I needed to install a WIA driver, which I downloaded. But when I try to install it 7 says it may not have installed properly.
The scanner now shows up on the import list under Photoshop CS4, but when I select it to import it then stalls for a short time then tells me it can't connect, and to check the leads etc.
Anyone got any ideas.

I just installed the latest Nvidia driver for Windows 7. I restarted and now have a black screen with the watermark in the lower right corner and a mouse pointer. How do I even roll back the driver? Should I hard shut down and try again?
Forgot about trying in safe mode...hope that does it.
Roll back in safe mode did it but I would be careful using these drivers for x64 Win 7. They say that's what they're for.
Edit more info: If you're looking at this...don't try to uninstall the driver that didn't work form "programs and features". It took ALL display drivers off my system and I went through hell again trying to get any display driver to work.

I had an SSD that was 120 gig. I recently bought a larger 240 gig samsung SSD since I got a free copy of far cry 3 and my old SSD was nearly full.I used the program that came with the samsung drive to swap the data over.It had all the appropriate settings listed, and it seemed pretty straight forward. I attached the new SSD drive and had all the space on it listed as "unalocated" as the Samsung Wizard explained. I copied over the two partitions on the old drive over to the new Samsung. I then removed the old 120 gig drive and tried to boot with the new Samsung and the 1TB data drive that I had attached all along.I shut down, removed the 120 gig drive and moved the 240 over to the same sata cable that the 120 was on.When I tried to boot, it failed.A screen came up that offered to automatically repair the install, but it was unable. It looked like it would boot into this same error over and over. I used the boot manager thing on my mobo using the f8 key. I chose the Samsung SSD from the list and it offered up 3 choices.
1. Windows 7 premium
2. Windows 7 premium (recovered)
3. Windows 7 premium (recovered)
If I choose option 1, it repeats the same "unable to repair so lets reboot...."If I choose option 2, the computer boots normally, it looks exactly like before, and all is good. Till I reboot. I don't know where the 3 installs that its offers as options. I need a way to set it to always boot to the Windows 7 premium (recovered) install.

I have an external Toshiba cable modem -USB - attached to my computer for Internet access and I am using the Windows 7 Ultimate OS. I then have a Vista Ultimate 64 bit machine connected to a Wired Router. The Vista Machine can access the Windows 7 machine through this network but not the internet. In the Windows 7 Network dialog box it shows the External modem as a Home Network but it shows the Vista machine's ethernet card as a Public Network and it will not let me change this setting at all.

I am having a problem similar to what somebody else has posted here in the past. I have Windows XP Home on my Desktop and Windows 7 on the laptop. I have them both networked. I am able to view shared Desktop folders from the Windows 7 laptop with no problems, but when I try to view the shared laptop folders from the XP Desktop, it keeps telling me to type in a username and password. On the Windows 7 laptop, I have it set in the Network and Sharing Center to not require a password.
I originally had it set up as a homegroup, then changed it to a workgroup on the laptop, but the same thing happens. I also changed the Computer Name on the laptop, but I still have to type in a username and password on the XP Desktop. Once I enter the username and password, I can freely access the laptop. But once I restart either machine, however, I then have to type the username and password on the Desktop again.
Can anybody assist me with this matter?

Well the heading of this thread interested me a lot, but my problem is somewhat different. I had a hell of a time installing Win7. Had to borrow a friends Geforce to finish installation since my ATI card (and I read in many places that the ATI drivers bundled with the win7 installation can cause trouble with HD4850). The installation would go to the final setup screen then BSOD every time.
Plugged in the Geforce and voila, I entered windows. I then switched back to the HD4850 and updated the drivers in safe mode. However, the stability was short-lived and I got recurring Power-Kernel critical errors (0x124). So after a week of complete instability and replacing every single driver I could think of, I gave up and went back to XP.
NOW the trouble started. I'm getting random resets and powerouts when running the same WinXP installation I had used before with no problems at all. I would think that a PSU either goes or doesn't, but is it possible that something has reduced its voltage output?
I'm pretty worked up about all this, since my computer was 100% stable before I tried Win7, now I can't even revert to XP. I can get into the OS for a few minutes, not even enough time to install chipset drivers. Safe mode just BSODs.

I haven't signed on to my laptop that I bought from former co-worker of mine (really savvy with computers) in a few months and I've forgotten the password to log-in. There was no animosity between us after the purchase - he ended up quitting and getting a job elsewhere. I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with Windows 7 Professional. All though, as evidenced from the bottom of the laptop, he did upgrade the OS at one point from Windows Visa but I am not sure which edition it was. I downloaded the Password Reset Wizard via from my parents home computer on to a new/unused USB flash drive. I clicked on the appropriate drive, typed in a new password, typed it again to confirm and typed in the password hint. After doing all of that, this error message came up "An error occurred while the wizard was attempting to set the password for this user account." Did I do something wrong? And at this point, I am stumped. I haven't been able to get in touch with the former co-worker. Should I call Microsoft and ask for them to send me a Windows 7 disk, buy it online (saw the cheapest price on Newegg for $139.99) or should I try a Windows password recovery tool?

I have a Leadtek dtv1000t card. Windows 7 will not allow the device to start. It says "Driver Blocked due to incompatibility"
I had it working on an older build of windows 7. Using the 7 or vista drivers would cause a bluescreen on startup but the xp drivers worked fine.
It seems this issue was recognised by ms and now the driver is blocked on the rtm.
I know the xp drivers work but windows blocks them, i have tried many different drivers, all blocked.
Is there a way to force windows to allow these blocked drivers?

I cannot get all my music files/folders into iTunes. They are all on an external hard-drive in a folder called "our music". Prior windows 7 i used to point to this folder and all 3000 imported. Now they only impport 191. I have re-installed several times no luck. I also get when i go to any of the folders/files an error message stating i do not have permission to access this file.
If I look at properties, it has read only and "cannot display owner" in fields. I have tried to re-assign owner via edit option and take off read only property - but an error message received that it can't do that without owner permission and go to security tab. I still then get the same message.
I have just had to re-install everything as I had Windows 7 about month ago first put on, and i didn't have these problems then. I think i must have set something up in security but i can't see any options to change that would prevent this from happening - As I have spent the last 4 weekends uninstalling etc as the image I created wouldn't load either, and system restore couldn't complete. I really do not fancy having to do the lot again, if i can trace the error it would be great.
