Printer On 7 Not Being Accessed By XP
Jun 30, 2009
My main pc is using Windows 7 64 bit build 7100, my kids pc is using XP Pro. Previously we had the networking with my main pc using Vista working perfectly, the XP pc could print on the printer connected to my pc, since I put Windows 7 on this pc. I have the networking with file sharing etc working great but cannot get the XP pc to be able to print anymore. The printer is an Epson RX690.

I was having a problem earlier with tons of BSOD's, but after getting some help here I was able to solve the problem. But lo and behold I try to install something and get this new problem. I tried going into cmd and unregistering windows installer and then re-registering it but that didnt work. Someone suggesting going into regedit and going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCURRENT CONTROL SETSERVICESMSIserverWOW64 then right click on WOW64, then select Modify Set Value Data to 0 (mine was set at 1) and Base should be Hexadecimal. However, I can't even do this because when I go to MSIserver there is no WOW64 folder so I don't even know what to change.
System restore doesn't work earlier. I really want to avoid a complete reinstall. I was able to avoid it with my BSODs but now with this new issue I cannot install anything on my computer.

I am getting an error when I am attempting to install the C++ Redistributable Package that says:
"Windows Installer Service cannot be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."
I have attempted to look up what this means, however all of the guides I find are for Windows 2000 or Server 2003! I have also had the same error message pop up when I try to manually install updates with Windows Updater.

This happened the last time I reformated and I don't really understand what's going on. I have 4 harddrives. 1 SSD and the rest are standard 7200RPM drives. This is the error I get when I try to install something.
Weird thing is I can't even play games cause I get this error too.
I did unplug the harddrives from the motherboard when I cleaned it, don't know if that could cause a problem, I don't believe they we're put in the same spots.

I understand that by right clicking on the sorting bar you can choose and add dozens of ways to sort your files. How do I apply one (Date Accessed) not just for one folder, but for on the folders on my drive?

Somehow a spammer got access to my email. Here's some stuff I use:
Windows 7 x64
Open DNS w/ all extra security options checked (phishing protection, basic malware/botnet protection, block internal ip addresses)
Wireless Router w/ a firewall MAC address filtering and WPA2 password protection
Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 (currently doing a full scan was on automated scanning daily)
I haven't opened any strange looking email attachments or gone to any unknown websites. I'd like to think I'm rather computer savvy but I'm stumped on this one.
Edit: forgot to mention the spammer gained access to a Yahoo! Mail account.
Edit 2: the browser I'm using is Google Chrome.

I have norton internet security 2012 installed on my windows 7 pro hp desktop. Today when I did a crap cleaner scan, it came up with approx. 22,000 kb of files to be deleted from "remote desktop". I did not use the remote desktop. Who would use it without my permission, and how could they do that? Or are there programs that actually use it as part of their operations? I'm concerned about security, as my (fairly new) computer has slowed down considerably.

Upon startup, the desktop icons are accessible, however, upon opening/closing of Internet Explorer, the icons will not even highlight, let alone open. This is both left click (single and double) and right click actions. The right click will not work on the desktop image/wallpaper itself either.

Been fooling about with customizations for Windows 7 and just tried 'Classic Start Menu' from The Code Project at: Code: [URL]. The final version is actually here: Code: [URL] No trouble with the app itself, it works a treat, and delivers a classic XP-type Start Menu in Windows 7. My question concerns the very useful 'Search Programs and Files' facility that opens when the regular Start button is clicked. When Classic Start Menu is installed, this option is missing. If this search box can still be accessed when Classic Start Menu is in place? I'd ask on the Source Forge forum but I'm having trouble logging in there. BTW, one interesting tip that I've learned during this 'crusade' is that the Search Programs and Files boxmenu pops up when the Windows key is clicked.

Why would an obscure WMP icon file be modified during routine background aintenance tasks? The file is a 48x48 PNG with a long [hash?] name. Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, all Windows Updates completed, current.Filename: 3c1b240e-1800-4f6d-93a8-83779041fc1d.pngSize: 5426bPath: :WindowsServiceProfilesNetworkServiceAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows Media Player NSS3.0Icon Filesondering what my PC does while I have a nap, I searched files that have been modified during nap time. Most of the activity appears ordinary, but this PNG jumps out. I do not even use WMP, it is not on my Desktop or menus that I access. The image may not be a common one... did a Google image search and don't see this one. System has been deep scanned for malware

I have 4 internal HDDs and have had this setup for about 2 months now. I had to reformat my computer this week and have since been having a problem with my hard drives. While I am browsing folders and occasionally even using programs, my HDDs will seize up for around 5-10 seconds. One of the drives starts to make some loading noises and then eventually they begin to work again. While this is happening I can usually use the GUI that is loaded and most things loaded into RAM, however I cannot access the HDD for anything new.One of the internal drives was originally an external drive, the Seagate FreeAgent 500GB. I suspect it may be the culprit here. I was having this exact same problem before with it; whenever I'd plug it in through USB, even if accessing another drive, I'd have the computer seize up and have to wait for it to finish making similar sounding loading noises. Removing it from the case and plugging it in internally fixed the issue completely, until I reformatted this week. I have checked all the cache options for the drives and they are all set the same; default which is just the top option checked off. I did this as I suspected that the Seagate drive is set with the same cache options as it did when external, but it's not the case.

I have 5 Windows 7 computers connected to the same homegroup/workgroup via a Cisco Linksys E1200. All four computers are HPs of various makes, 3 laptops (one of them is a $600 brick) and 2 desktops. Any computer that is awake and online, shows up (with its name) in Network on the other machinesHowever, double-clicking to view files on these computers returns the following message:Code: Windows cannot access \COMPNAMECheck the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. Totry to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.Details: Error code: 0x80070035 - The network path was not found.Diagnose, as expected, did nothing. However, here's the fun bit - when I try to access files on other computers by browsing their IP address, everything works perfectlyFor now, anyway. I'm expecting a sudden degradation any day now.

Cleaning up the friend of a friend's completely virus infested, badly working computer.
Windows 7x64 HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC
The Basics:While I was beginning to install and manually offline-update various anti-malware tools so that I could begin to determine what I needed to do to get this thing clean and properly operable, I noticed while looking at Programs and Features that many of the install dates for various software were dated in various months in 2013. My installations were 1 year, 2 days ahead of the current date. Windows Explorer shows this to be consistent throughout the files and folders installed.
Looking at the install dates for some of the HP proprietary software/bloatware, I can tell this behavior started some point after the computer was purchased and used (the bloatware installation date was one day after the warranty start date listed in the BIOS). I am presuming dates on files and folders created, modified, or accessed from the point of the initial occurrence of what caused these particular incorrect future timestamps are the only ones affected.
The clock and date were wrong by the exact amount forward as were the install dates for the files I installed, so, as expected, the files were taking their timestamp from the computer's time. I assume whenever the computer date and time were maladjusted is when the problem started. I fixed the time and date, but the files and folders did not adjust their timestamps, again as expected.
1. Are there any particular problems I am not considering which could be caused by the incorrect dates, other than some particular searching and arrangement issues, which in this case I think would be superficial? This type of date information is just descriptive metadata for files and folders, correct?
2. Is there any way to fix this? I cannot think of any, but maybe there is something I am missing, hashing it out in my mind. If the BIOS clock and the Windows date and time settings were separate and the date metadata were generated based on a timer referencing the BIOS clock, then I could see a way to repair this. But, at least on this notebook, a change in one is reflected in the other--I think this is how Windows OSes operate in general. Anyway, any ideas?
3. Finally, after I finish cleaning and repairing the notebook, is there any way to globally reset all of the date metadata on all files/folders to reflect the present? So long as having incorrect future timestamps does not affect operation, then this is superficial, but it is irrationally driving me crazy. If it were my computer, I could not stand it--barely can stand it as it is. I have found a program that lets you reset all of the dates of all files in a folder, or the dates of all folders visible when opening a directory or subdirectory, but not both simultaneously, and so of course not anything that would change the dates of all the files and folders nested within one another from root.

A few thousand of my pictures could not be accessed anymore after I had to re-install my whole computer after a crash. They all got the error message: "Access is Denied". Also copying and deleting is impossible. With the great free tool UNLOCKER I could still delete them. Then, searching for an explanation, I found forum posts trying to explain that the error message had to do with older Windows versions, different folder systems, links instead of real files. I didnt understand at all, but wanted to follow up the advice 'take ownership an change permissions'. So I went to the Reccle Bin and restored the unaccessible files. Surprise! After restoring their behavior was completely normal.
1. Install UNLOCKER
2. Rightclick on the unaccessible files (group selection possible) and select DELETE.
3. Go to the recycle bin, select the same files, right click and select RESTORE.
4. Files should be accessible now.

I am getting the "Windows Installer Service Could not be accessed" error. Every time I try to install a new program I get this message. I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I purchased my computer about a year ago from best buy and they didn't give me a Windows 7 installation disc, so I can't do a clean install if I wanted to (though I prefer not to, of course).I have tried:1) re-registering Windows Installer with the msiexec /regserver2) running sfc /scannw3) running a system restore (though I can only restore to about 5 days ago to before(?) I did a system update) and it says it could not complete the restore (I think because of a corrupted file?)4) chkdsk5) scan with AVG & Trendmicro housecallI have been working on this for about 10 hours now..very frustrating! I feel like I am out of luck.
Most of the fixes I find online seem not to work for Windows 7I am also experiencing other problems now as well: Windows Media Player is saying "the file wmploc.dll has a version number 12.0.7601.17514 where 12.0.7600.16667 was expected"It seems like a new thing is breaking every second! When I go to services.msc it says it can't run the activex controls to show me the properties.

having moved once and having add and removed computers from my home network, along with other changes, I now have a cluttered Printer Selection Window, by which I mean the window that pops up when I want to print a document. I have five versions of a Brother printer and four versions of an HP printer, and only one of each is actually good. How do I clean up that window by getting rid of those obsolete references that no longer work? It's ridiculous that they don't simply disappear when I select one of them as the default.
