Dec 2, 2011when I'm formatting a HDD that is completely clean (no partitions or volumes) should I create a partition or some kind of volume to format the drive, which will format the whole drive, I don't know which one to go with.
If partition, what kind, primary extended etc. If volume, what kind of volume RAID, stripe etc

He want me to create a two extra partitions in existing primary partition which is C:The HDD is 1TB in size.One hour ago I had used Dell data backup program and created recovery discs and then formatted the Laptop to factory default. I thought before formatting it will give me options to create a partitions but it did not had any option.

Jul 1, 2010I'm using Compaq Presario CQ40-627TUMy Laptop SpecIntel Dual Core Processor T4400 (2.2GHz, 80Mhz FSB,1 MB L2 Cache)- 2048MB 800MHz DDR2 Memory- 320GB 7200rpm Hard Disk Drive- 14.1' TFT WXGA High-Definition widescreen LCD panel with brightviewtechnologynd i'm using windows 7 Ultimate on boot system partition C, dual boot with linux mint. which mean i got four partition. one for linux mint. one for its swap space. one for windows 7. one for my data storage(movies,drivers,mp3,picture and etc).last few days i try to resize my C partition (120gb) to make it smaller to gain some unallocated spaces and resize the D partition because my D (almost 100gb) (ntfs/primary/data storage) almost full. i use easeus partition master v5.01.
After done resizing and restart i can't see any D partition. so i was worried that my data will disappeared. i try to look for it but there is no Drive D even on the easeus or diskpart. the only drive appears was C Drive.i remove my Linux Mint and its swap (60gb) and thinking that i could get some more free space and do some cmd prompt windows 7 repair fixmbr thing to remove the grub. then i use partition recovery to transfer those missing data from partition D to C Drive. (appears as unformatted)i try to use partition wizard home to resize it back to 300gb. and it works. but i cant make a partition. it will disappear just like that.i also try to use diskpart,command prompt diskpard, and paragon. but also not working. the C drive was shrink but theres no unallocated space and no D drive (the new create partition). i try logical partition,primary,ntfs and fat but also not working. even the unallocated space also gone. i use almost 4 3rd party partitioning software but still got no luck with it.example:i divide 300gb into 2 partition which exist the C partition 150Gb but the other one gone. i wish theres other way than format. i also done many time. doing check disk, partition table doctor, searching for bad sector. but no errors with my hdd.
Can't Create New Simple Volume

I can shrink the 650gb by say 300gb, and it will make a 350gb unallocated partition.If i try to create a new simple volume from the 350gb, disk mgmt throws errors saying 'not enough space to complete operation'
Create A New Volume With Unallocated Space On 3TB Hard Drive?
Nov 13, 2011I currently just set up my new build. I decided to go with Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB for my hard drive. However, I split the hard drive into two parts: 2 TB and roughly about 770 GB unallocated space. I installed Window 7 on 2TB partition. Now, I decide to use the rest of 770 GB of unallocated space. I tried to use Computer Management, but it doesn't give me the option to create a new volume from unallocated space. Similar thing happened with EaseUS Partition Master. With Acronis Disk Director, it doesn't even recognize the unallocated space at all!!! So how can I create a new volume or even merge it with my C drive? Do I have to reformat my hard drive and split them again and do a clean installation again?
Note:I already checked, my BIOS recognizes my hard drive with 3 TB. The unallocated space is right after my C drive. There is only 1 primary MBR partition (C drive), and 100 MB system files right before it.

Jun 8, 2011A friend has asked me to install Widows 7 on a friends laptop which has XP. The laptop doesn't have a DVD drive (no drive at all) so I've had to stick the installer on a USB stick from disc using a program.The USB boots up fine on the laptop, just like a disc. I formatted 2 partitions (same drive) and tried to install windows 7 but I get this error:"setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing partition"So now, I have someone else's laptop with no OS. The owner is a 70 year old computer illiterate man.i'm planning on trying to install Vista instead and if successful, upgrade to 7. I would have upgraded in the 1st place, but P can't be directly upgraded to 7.

Apr 6, 2011I'm currently running Win XP Pro. on dynamic disks with the system partition mirrored.I have a 20GB simple volume on one of the dynamic disks which I had intended to install a copy of Windows 7 Enterprise on, intending to dual-boot as I changed over from XP to 7, but it appears that you can't install Windows 7 on a dynamic disk as "setup cannot find a location for temporary files." According to Microsoft my only option is to revert the existing dynamic disk/s to basic - losing everything on it including my XP installation.Microsoft says not to mix volumes and partitions on the same disk, but a third party application called Dynamic Disk Converter claims to be able to change simple volumes back to primary partitions - though it isn't clear from the documentation if this can be done to just one volume out of several on a dynamic disk.My options appear to be:
1. Get another hdd for Windows 7.
2. Break the XP mirror and convert one dynamic disk back to basic for Windows 7 - losing my RAID protection
3. Ignore Microsoft's advice and see if Dynamic Disk Converter actually can convert a simple volume back to a primary partition, risking my whole installation.
Remove System Volume Partition On 2nd Harddrive?
Mar 2, 2011I removed the mirror for my 2 hardrive to reinstall Windows 7 & sp1. I am now unable to remirror(greyed out) or reformat that 2nd drive as it is still showing as a system volume partion.

Aug 13, 2012I have a copy of windows 7 from a friend. (USB, possibly enterprise)It runs well, is official and can be re installed and is verified through the Microsoft site, so the media doesn't seem to be a problem.I was able to install Win7 Ult x64 on my WinVista HomePrem x86, but I went back through to clean the hard drive (it was full, I didn't format before) and after low level formatting I cannot reinstall the OS. The harddrives are completely empty, and I get stuck at "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition," after hitting next when you are selecting the HD partition to install on. I tried a couple of things already:
-Installing on another harddrive
-Formatting using Hiren's bootcd
-Using a hard drive with XP installed to see if it is an upgrade and not a full version (no luck, still wouldn't install)
-diskpart > list disk > select disk 0 > list partition > active \ in cmd..I have three hard drives attached to the computer right now, they can't all be broken. T.T
Deleted Linux Volume - Missing Windows 7 Partition
Jun 18, 2012I am using dual booted laptop Windows 7 and Linux. I opened my Disk management and I right clicked the Linux partition drive and I selected "Delete Volume", After that i formated that partition. Now when I restarted my laptop, i got error like this:
"Grub loading. Error: Unknown files grub rescue>".
Then I created a live USB contains SGD iso file. I booted this USB on booting time and selected Windows boot. It asked in the black screen with options "Start windows normally " and " Launch and Start up Repair and " I selected the second option and I tried to restore my back up files, then I can see that C drive contains only the files and folders which I was stored in D drive. and D drive shows only 200 MB size. I dont have CD drive in my laptop. Before this problem:
C drive is -58GB
D drive is -141GB
Now C drive shows 141GB and contains the files which were in my D drive.
