Cannot Delete Volume?
Jun 21, 2012so I wanted to dual boot two operating systems so I shrunk my main partition in half but didn't format the new partition. Now, I want to delete it or format it but it doesn't work, instead gives me this annoying error message "The system cannot find the file specified". How can it not find the file specified? It's 170 GIGABYTES. Also, it doesn't have a name, so is that the reason? I can't find it in "My computer", so is that why? It says underneath that it's "Healthy", and a "Simple Volume"

Nov 26, 2012I have installed Windows 7 on my C: however my old Windows XP was installed on my D: deleted my Windows XP, and want to use my D: as primarily a data disc, however there's an old System Volume Information lingering around from XP, and no matter what I do (take ownership, add permissions, try to toggle off read only and it goes back) I can't delete it.

May 17, 2012I had an additional Windows installation for testing purposes, on a different partition and now I want to delete everything associated with it because I need some free space.
Although I managed to take ownership and delete the Windows folder and few others, I can't delete System Volume Information and the pagefile.sys file.
System Volume Information - I can't get "ownership" of the files in the directory. Although I'm listed as an "owner" of the directory with "full control", when I check "Replace owner on subcontainer and objectes" I get "Access is denied" and then "Stopping propagation of the owner leads to an inconsistent state..." I think I came across this before, but I have no idea what to do. I also get "access denied" when I try to change the read-only attribute of the directory.
pagefile.sys - when I right click on it, the security tab says "The requested security information is wither unavailable or can't be displayed"
note: I can't format the partition

Apr 6, 2011I'm currently running Win XP Pro. on dynamic disks with the system partition mirrored.I have a 20GB simple volume on one of the dynamic disks which I had intended to install a copy of Windows 7 Enterprise on, intending to dual-boot as I changed over from XP to 7, but it appears that you can't install Windows 7 on a dynamic disk as "setup cannot find a location for temporary files." According to Microsoft my only option is to revert the existing dynamic disk/s to basic - losing everything on it including my XP installation.Microsoft says not to mix volumes and partitions on the same disk, but a third party application called Dynamic Disk Converter claims to be able to change simple volumes back to primary partitions - though it isn't clear from the documentation if this can be done to just one volume out of several on a dynamic disk.My options appear to be:
1. Get another hdd for Windows 7.
2. Break the XP mirror and convert one dynamic disk back to basic for Windows 7 - losing my RAID protection
3. Ignore Microsoft's advice and see if Dynamic Disk Converter actually can convert a simple volume back to a primary partition, risking my whole installation.
Remove System Volume Partition On 2nd Harddrive?
Mar 2, 2011I removed the mirror for my 2 hardrive to reinstall Windows 7 & sp1. I am now unable to remirror(greyed out) or reformat that 2nd drive as it is still showing as a system volume partion.

I used bcdedit to delete the boot entry for Server 2008, and now I'd like to remove the install of Server 2008 and reformat the drive. However, I am not able to delete the volume or format the c drive.
Deleted Linux Volume - Missing Windows 7 Partition
Jun 18, 2012I am using dual booted laptop Windows 7 and Linux. I opened my Disk management and I right clicked the Linux partition drive and I selected "Delete Volume", After that i formated that partition. Now when I restarted my laptop, i got error like this:
"Grub loading. Error: Unknown files grub rescue>".
Then I created a live USB contains SGD iso file. I booted this USB on booting time and selected Windows boot. It asked in the black screen with options "Start windows normally " and " Launch and Start up Repair and " I selected the second option and I tried to restore my back up files, then I can see that C drive contains only the files and folders which I was stored in D drive. and D drive shows only 200 MB size. I dont have CD drive in my laptop. Before this problem:
C drive is -58GB
D drive is -141GB
Now C drive shows 141GB and contains the files which were in my D drive.

Oct 26, 2009I was running Windows Vista on my C drive and had purchased Windows 7. Prior to installing Win 7, I partitioned my C drive (since it was one giant drive) and made a new one and labeled it H. I then went on to install Windows 7 on the H drive, which went smoothly. Now I'd like to delete the partition that contains Vista.
However, I am not able to delete it and I get an error. I have attached the screen shot of my disk management. If someone could explain how I could go about in order to delete the C partition, that would be wonderful. I again apologize for starting this thread if someone else has posted the same thing elsewhere.

Dec 8, 2009I had windows vista home premium 64bit in a dual boot with windows 7 ultimate beta build. Then I got my upgrade cd and upgraded vista to Windows 7 home premium 64bit. So now I have a dual boot with Windows 7 (new version with all my files on it) and Windows 7 (old beta with almost nothing on it except for Windows 7 beta). In the disk manager, it says "system, BOOT, page file, active, primary partition" for the new Windows 7, and just "primary partition" for the old beta partition.
I'm pretty sure this means I can delete the old partition and re-allocate the space to my main partition, but I'm posting this just to be sure because I learned a hard lesson when I deleted an ubuntu partition that was in charge of the boot.

Recently I decided to delete Ubuntu once and for all. To do this, I followed this tutorial: Partition or Volume Delete,However I cannot pass step5. Once I click "yes" I get the most retarded and frustrating error message I've ever seen in all my life (and I've seen lots of them),-"An unexpected error has occurred. So I downloaded Vista Boot Manager and deleted Windows XP on the list, so now its only booting from Windows 7. But all those files of Windows XP are still left on the partition. And I have no access to delete them, not even in a save boot. Unlocker helped me a while, but I'm now stuck with 3 folders which I can't delete. I've got now 50 GB left on my HDD, and the partition of Windows XP was 200 GB, so I think you can realize I want those GB back!

As you can see in the attached image, C: is marked as a system partition but in fact I'd like to delete it and leave only D: with Windows 7 on it. However I can't delete it because it says it's a system partition soooo... how do I do this? Is setting the C: as inactive in command prompt (and D: as active) enough? Nov 7, 2009I'm not sure if this thread belongs here or not, but I'm having an issue that is driving me nuts.
I have 2 hard drives, a 200 gig 7200rpm and a 35 gig 10000rpm. The 200 gig is split into two partitions. 150 gig and 50 gig. Originally, I had the Vista Upgrade installed over XP on the 50 gig and all my media and junk on the 150 gig partition. A few choice programs were installed on the 10K.
I decided I wanted the Windows 7 Upgrade to be installed on the 10K from now on so that things move a bit faster, boot times and whatnot. So I did and now I have the 150 gig partition free and wiped, but the 50 gig partition with my old Vista won't wipe, format or delete whatsoever, and it won't let me boot from any of the discs so I can just delete and wipe everything and start over.
It feels like a jumbled mess and I just want to get it all right. How on earth can I delete, format or completely wipe my 50 gig partition so I can delete that partition and make it whole with the other 150 gigs and just have all of Windows installed on my 10K?
I tried changing my boot order in the bios and it just tells me to insert the system disc. It won't recognize it and let me delete the partitions manually.
