My Computer Does Not See My Cd / Dvd Drive
Mar 29, 2011
My computer does not see my cd/dvd drive. It is there, but when I press it, it does not respond. I think it has something to do with my registry. My registry does not have a root.dir. If there is a way to reset registry

I'm fixing my sisters computer, It froze on her, when she tried to start it up again it went into some sort of system repair mode and after about 20hrs of this (no joke) it gave me the option to restore the computer to factory settings, it also gave me the option to install some sort of backup on the hard drive, however i tried this and it said there was no room on the hard drive (if i didn't know any better I'd say the problem was with the hard drive) i went ahead with the system recovery as it seemed to be the only way to fix the computer (i know i sound like an oaf) now the computer is showing me a screen which states that i need to insert my windows installation disc, however the laptop has no disc drive!

The computer I'm having a problem on is a HP G6- 635 DX Windows 7 x64. About a week ago I decided to disable a few startup items because my computer took too long to load up. I think I disabled something that I shouldnt have because the next time I restarted I had gotten stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen. After I couldnt fix that problem I decided to just use the System Recovery option, so I popped out my hard drive and put it into an HDD enclosure and backed up my music/video files onto my other computer (Windows Vista Home Premium). When I plugged my hard drive back into the laptop I got the "bootmgr is missing" screen. I've tried all the command prompt steps to try and fix the bootmgr, they arent working but I think thats because my computer is automatically booting from the C: drive (which has no files in it and is about 200mb in size), and my D: drive is 285 gb and has all of the folders that used to be in the C: drive (Program Files, Users, Windows etc). Theres also another drive titled "Recovery" with the size of 13 gb

I have Easeus Partition Manager bootable by CD & an HDD enclosure, thats how I am able to see the files. So basically what I;m asking is, is there a way that I can get my computer to boot from the D: drive OR what files should I move from the D: to C: drive that will make my computer boot and finish the System Recovery?

I have a HP Touchsmart IQ500. Turning my computer PC on today, all I got was a blue HP invent screen with setup, boot menu, system recovery, and system diagnosis, and I could not get past it. I entered the BIOS and figured out that the hard drive was listed as "not installed." Pretty sure that is the main problem.I tried a system restore (with the Windows 7 install disc), but I guess the computer couldn't read the hard drive enough to enter safe mode (I tried restarting and F8ing several times). I put in an external hard drive, and the BIOS read it; however, windows does not allow you to partition an OS on a hard drive.

I recently bought an Asus U50F notebook. Pretty good so far. But for the past few days, the DVD/CD-ROM E: drive disappears from My Computer. I go to Device Manager and it shows as disabled (Code 22). I proceed to enable it, and it then shows under My Computer again (and works well). But a little while later, it happens again, and I must return to Device Mgr to enable it. This is a continuous issue. I get no help from googling. The drive is a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ892AS. I have Win7 Home Premium.

I recently install windows 7 RC and when I tried to put in the cd to install some sound drivers my computer just froze. explorer.exe just stops responding whenever I put any disc in the drive. If I open the drive to take the disc out it instantly unfreezes and it's completely fine! I have tried reinstalling drivers and several other things and I'm at a loss.

I'm new to Windows 7 (Ultimate) and like to have a machine that runs nice and fast with no unessential items running in the background. Last night I did a bit of tweaking (mostly in gpedit.msc) and went a step too far, but I'm not sure which step I need to undo and haven't been able to find a solution in a 4 hour google session. When I click on My Computer, the cupboard is bare.I have a 500gb drive partitioned into C: and D: and a DVD drive E:The right pane is empty, and when I plug in a USB drive it doesn't show either. When I click on libraries, I can manually enter C: or D: in the address bar but it's a bit inconvenient. I usually use Total Commander rather than Windows explorer, but it's been difficult to set up my downloads location etc as they don't appear in the available options. In device manager the disk is showing.

I reinstalled Windows 7 initializing all the hard drives to fix the constant crashes, and it seems to have worked. The bad news is that the computer does not seem to recognize one of my CD drive. By that I mean, if you click on computer it will show one of my CD drives under devices and removable storage, but not the other CD drive.
If I put a CD in, the drive will spin up but nothing happens. I tried to reinstall the drivers for the one CD drive but that was no help. How do I get the computer to see this other CD drive?
I'm running Window 7. Should I re-install Windows 7 again?

*I see a bunch of folders in my F and G drives, but can't seem to use any of the program files and I don't even see "my documents" from my old computer or any outlook files...maybe I am lookign in wrong place.

My computer will not recognize my CD ROM drive (the D drive). For example: when I put a disc into the CD drive, the mouse pointer briefly changes to a CD icon (as it normally does) to tell me -- presumably -- that the drive is scanning the disc for its Table Of Contents. However, the CD icon only appears for a split second (when normally it would take a few seconds to read the contents). When I double-click on the D drive to run the CD, it prompts me to 'Please insert disc into Drive D', when in fact there is already a disc in the drive. Can you tell me why this might be happening?

My computer is running realllllly slow, and I'm not sure why. There's a lot of extra space on the computer, and Hardly anything running in the back ground. I just put a new hard drive in the computer, as it has done this previously, It slowed to a point where it would freeze and no longer work, until one day I turned it on, went to log in and it automatically restarted, so I discovered that the hard drive had crashed, I put a new one in it and it was fine, until about 2 weeks ago, when it started slowing down majorly.

I'm trying to get my Computer to sleep but it won't because of the Western Digital 1TB external hard drive that is connected to my network. The backup program is causing this problem, if I turn it off then it will sleep. I would like to keep it turned on because it will save any changes that are made to my folders and files. I would use the back program that comes with Windows 7, but that doesn't work. I get "Access is denied" Error code: 0x80070005. I think the problem may be from being connected to a network.

I am trying to run memtest on a new build and for some reason, the machine will not boot from the disc drive. I'm positive that it CAN boot from the disc drive because I just installed windows 7x64 on it last night. I have already configured the BIOS to boot from CDROM as it's first choice and selected to boot from CDROM thru the boot menu. I am 100% positive that this memtest disc is good because I just successfully ran it on my main machine with no problems.
ps. to power the disc drive I am using a 4-pin molex to SATA adapter since my PSU only has 2 SATA pwr connectors and they are being used to power my 2 HDD's. I don't know if this has to do with it...could it be a bad adapter not powering the drive at initial startup? Bear in mind that the drive works fine once I'm in the OS.
