I bought a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop new in Italy in December 2009 from a major computer store. The computer came installed with Windows 7 Home Premium (Italian), and I have installed on it an original version of Microsoft Office XP 2003 Professional Edition (English). The CD-ROM unit is a Matsushita DVD+-RW UJ890.Since I bought the computer I have sometimes had difficulty burning DVDs with the built-in Windows 7 burner function that I access from Explorer. Often in the past I have ended up with partially written DVDs. Nevertheless by using high-quality DVDs I have been able to burn DVDs successfully most of the time using the Windows 7 utility. I last used the utility successfully a couple of months ago when I burned a couple of DVDs to backup some photos.
Since yesterday I have been trying to backup my most important files onto DVDs. The attempt has failed in every case. First I copy about 3 GB of files from drive C: onto drive D: in Explorer. These are several hundred files divided into three different directories, consisting mostly of PDF, Word, Excel, and JPG files, some of them with names in foreign scripts like Cyrillic, Japanese, or Chinese. Then I insert a new DVD (either Verbatim or TDK) and attempt to master the DVD by selecting the option write to disk from the Explorer menu (whether from the menus at the top of the screen or by right-clicking on drive D: in the lefthand pane of the screen). A window pops up asking me for the name of the disk, whether I want it to be flash or one-time only, and the recording speed (8x, 4x, 2x, etc.).
Once I click continue to start burning the DVD, a window pops up to tell me that Windows is making an image of the disk, and then the window tells me that it has begun mastering the disk, giving me a countdown of how many minutes are left (6 minutes to 11 minutes, depending on the speed I choose). But no matter what name I give to the disk and what recording speed I pick, after 30-60 seconds the popup window and the Explorer window both suddenly close and the DVD units writing light goes out, but the DVD unit continues to whir at high speed forever.
Here are the results I got yesterday with 3 separate DVDs:
1. On the first DVD I used Windows 7s burn utility on a Verbatim DVD, and I ended up with 28 files burned onto the DVD (making it unusable).
2. On the second try I used some simple burn software that I had used before Roxio Burn on a TDK DVD, and ended up with 4 files burned onto the disk (but from different folders than the 28 files burned by Windows 7).
3. On my third attempt, after going offline, shutting down my antivirus software (AVG), and using Task Manager to shut down processes from that other burn software, Roxio Burn, I used Windows 7s burn utility again on a TDK DVD and ended up with the identical 28 files that had I ended up with the first time, though this time I had chosen a lower writing speed.
In all three of these attempts the DVD unit continued to whir after the windows had closed, until such time as I ejected the disk manually. When I first encountered this problem yesterday I thought the problem might be caused by my antivirus software AVG Free Edition interfering with the writing process, because after one particular automatic update by AVG about two months ago I began having problems with AVG blocking Skype and placing some of my Nokia cell phone software in quarantine. But by disabling the HIPS element of AVG I was able to resolve those problems several weeks ago and begin using Skype successfully again. But just to be sure, today I disinstalled AVG completely and installed Microsoft Security Essentials. Because I had read in a forum online that Windows 7 might have conflicts with other burning software that was also installed, today I also disinstalled the only burning software that I had installed Roxio Burn and did a cold reboot. Before attempting to burn a DVD again today, I also used Task Manager to shut down some other processes that didnt seem necessary, such as a Nokia autolauncher and a Java autoupdate process. I also changed the time delay for Windows sleep or power-save function to one hour.
I inserted a new TDK DVD, accepted the disk name proposed by Windows, chose for the disk to be permanent rather than flash, and chose a burning speed of 4x. After 30 seconds I received a popup window with the following message:
ST Service Scheduling has stopped working.I ignored this message and did nothing, because often in the past when I have succeeded in burning DVDs with Windows 7's utility I have had this message appear, but if I do nothing I almost always have the burn proceed successfully. In this case, though, after another 10-20 seconds the Explorer window and burning-countdown window both closed, the DVD light went out, but the DVD continued whirring at high velocity. The DVD unit did not respond to my pushing the expel button by hand, and when I tried to expel the DVD using Explorer I only got an error message, so the DVD could be expelled only by shutting down the computer. When I turned the computer back on, I discovered that no files at all had been written to this DVD.below are the details from the ST Service Scheduling error message (in Italian, sorry). Whenever I get these ST Service Scheduling error messages I get them twice, i.e., after choosing Close one time the same message immediately appears again and I have to choose Close a second time.

Just about every time I try to permanently delete a large file or folder, either by shift/delete or emptying the recycle bin the operation hangs up.The little window opens and it counts up the size of the file and that it. Nothing else overtly happens. The status bar never starts indicating and the window just sits there with the little green lights chasing each other across it. If I try to cancel or close the window it nothing happens.During the time all this is going on, I can hit ctrl/alt/del and select Task Manager and it simply goes back to the desktop with this window still squatting there doing it's thing. I have pinned TM to the task bar and tried starting it from there but it never starts. Eventually everything just slows to a stop and nothing works which would seem to indicate some kind of memory leak. There are no error messages during any of this.I have to hit reset and restart the computer that way in order to regain control and we all know how bad an idea this is. I've already had my boot sector eaten once causing me to have to do a total rebuild and I'd prefer not to have to do it again.

I've just setup an HTPC (Windows 7 Professional 32bit) and am using WMC on Windows 7. I've run into a problem that lots and lots of people have had (can see lots of posts on the web) but not fixes seem to work and I've trolled for two days now finding no fixes for the problem.Perhaps someone can assist?Problem: When I add a shared folder from my SAN (which I can access from Windows Explorer), WMC says scanning for files but never finds any. I have a collection of AVI files on the SAN and am wanting to list them in the Movie library on WMC (not the Video Library).I've heard it's a file association problem but that does not seem to fix the problem. I've changed the association of AVIs from WMP to WMC.Any idea what the real fix is?Question: What's the best practice to put a collection of AVIs on the WMC. If you have 10 movies, what's best?1. Create a folder called Movies and under that folder, 10 additional folders for Movie1, Movie2, etc and under those folders the actual AVI files, or,

I usually send clients large images around 4Mb via the email. I also upload to various sites, files up to 15Mb. They are all usually jpeg or .psd format.
For some reason it just doesn't work anymore - they get so far and seem to just hang. I contacted my ISP provider and they went through all their trouble shooter but told me that the problem is my end.
I am using Windows 7 64 bit. I have tried IE9 and Google Chrome but neither helps. I use Microsoft Security Essential. I have tried turning off the firewall but this doesn't work either.
Smaller versions of the jpegs seem to upload OK. I haven't done anything to change what I am using recently other than to run the automatic updates.
I have internet satellite using an ipstar modem. No router.

I run a software tool that often generates 75,000 - 100,000 small files that need to be deleted after the software exits. Right now, it can take 8 - 10 minutes to permanently delete all these files from a single run, and I usually have 4 - 8 runs to deal with, so do the math. I have tried shift-del to permanently delete but it doesn't work - Windows still copies everything to the recycle bin. Also, while moving the files to the recycle bin, I often get an error message: "Error 0x80070050: The file exists." Bottom line is that it takes a *really* long time just to delete these files and I need a quicker way to do it.

For some reason I am not able to transfer large files to my Windows Home Server (home build). The file will start to transfer then just stop and error out.
The error message says Network Error: There is a problem accessing serverfolder.
This is on a wired connection so I dont know why it would just be dropping the connection. I can still surf the internet fine during this time.
Realtek RTL8169/8100 network cart, cat5e cable, 10/100 netgear 24 port unmanaged switch, WRT54GL router(tomato firmware). NICs are set to auto negotiate.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
I attached a screen shot of the error message and network monitor.

I am trying to get several peoples opinion. I believe that a small disk that is bootable similar to a ssd is better that a large one full of data. There is less disk to deframent and it should be faster. The larger data disk will contain most of the files many of which will not be used a large part of the time. One can keep larger files such as pictures or videos in that data disk. I probably prefer a small ssd(less than 100GB) but am not sure that is the best way to go right now. Later on when the price and quality of ssd goes down I could substitute that drive for the small hd partition or drive.

I have 2 internal-sata hard drives(320 gig. And 2tb.) and 1 external usb/2.0 hard drive (750 gig.). The pc is an old dell gx520 tower with a fresh install of Windows 7 pro. No antivirus, network connection, or firewall enabled. Processor is a Pentium4 running 3 GHz with 1.5 gigs of ram. This is the problem: If I do a search on the 2tb. Drive for all of the jpegs, I have a total of about 84000 pictures. When I select all of the pictures and right click-copy and try to paste to another hard drive the pc will lock up and won't display a copy status window. Windows says it's not responding. Now, if I right click-copy a single folder which has anywhere, from a few files to several hundred gigs. of data in it, using the same 2tb. Drive, it will copy over to another drive just fine. I have tried, changing the swap file from "windows managed" to, up to 20 gig. Thinking the search was maybe having to write to the swap file. This didn't work. I also booted in to safe mode and tried to do the copy from the 2tb. To the 320gig. drive and still no difference. I have tried this with windows copy handler and teracopy. It all has something to do with the fact that I am doing a search for the files before copying them.

When i start downloading large data files with multiple connections (it does not matter which download manager i use - flash get, jdownloader, IDM) it starts to consume a lot of MB until it consumes all of it, but when i close the download manager only about 200 MB becomes free (before downloading started i had used only 900/2048 MB and after closing download manager, it is used ~1800 MB / 2048 MB and there is no program in task manager which would consume such a lot of memory and i can free the ram only by restarting computer. This happens to me on celan RC version and even on clean RTM version.
I have quite a fast conenction 50/50 Mbps so the RAM runs out quite fast (in 15 minutes i have no free ram).
This happens only in Windows 7 (in Vista, XP it downloads without any memory leak using the same download managers)
Does anyone have the same problem or know how to solve it?

Everything is so slow e.g. opening of FireFox, opening of Excel, opening of Task Manager etc. While I'm copying 750GB of data from one partition to another partition, why? I'm running Windows 7 x64 7100 on a separate partition and I have a Q6600, 4GB ram and 5 X 1 TB WD Black edition drives...Task Manager is showing 33 running processors, 3 - 5 % CPU usage and 1.35GB of ram usage. Is this a Windows 7 bug? Windows 7 is super fast when I'm not copying/transferring large files between partitions!

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate with a 6-core AMD processor, 16GB RAM, SSD as primary. Whenever I transfer a large file over the network to another system the mouse and other applications will persistently hang for a second here and there as long as the transfer is in progress. I'm sending 8-10GB files over from the secondary 2TB 5400RPM drive and no resources are showing as maxed out so I don't get it. I'm thinking of trying a 3rd party file transfer solution again, but this still shouldn't be happening with the default.
