Move HDD To New Computer
Apr 16, 2012
The problem is that installing from the CD works fine untill a certain point of the installation and then it it fails, done it several times and breaks at same place each time... Thats why I have to try and fix it some other way, and thats is why I tried the following. So, removed the HDD from her computer, removed all HDD from my own computer, pluged in her HDD, Installed Windows 7 on her HDD on my computer with same CD.As soon as installation was done, shut down and removed HDD, no internet plugged in and no uppdates done or anything in that way.Everything worked fine no problems at all.Removed the HDD from my computer, plugged it in to her computer, fixed boot order, compuer finds HDD in Bios, when it wants to boot from it.All that happens is "Verifying DMI Pool Data...Update Success" then the compuer just stands there for several minuts and nothing happens.Im guessing that we have differnt motherboards, CPU, and all that, is there any way I can make it work ?I have started with Windows 7 CD, and tried to do "repair" but there is nothing to repair so that dint help either.
-CD problems = No
-HDD broken = No
So Im looking for some help that can make the HDD work on her computer. Is there some way of software or file edeting I can do to make this work ?

is it possible to move win 7 home premium 32bit from my current computer into a new one onto an ssd (the ssd will be brand new and have nothing on it) and then upgrade it to 64bit?
becuase the new motherboard has UEFI (Gigabyte SKT-1155 Z77-DS3H ) i was thinking if i may be able to do the UEFI bootable usb drive tutorial UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows then install with that but im not sure how i would upgrade to 64bit in that process or if it will even work. UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with and i also want a fresh install but would like to keep some of the files on my system like steam games, skype etc.

I currently have a MacBook Pro running MacOS 10.4.somethingsomething.I also use BootCamp to dualboot into Windows 7 64bit Ultimate version. Here is where i could really use your help & advice:I am planning on building my own PC this holiday season and, since i am a college kid on a budget, i would rather not have to spend the $100 or so to purchase another copy of Windows. Therefore, I am looking to transfer my entire OS (files, drivers, and all) to this new system. What would be the easiest way to do this? Here is my thought process so far:
1. purchase a 500GB+ external Hard Drive
2. back up (create an image of) my current Windows partition onto said drive
3. assemble new computer and restore the image from the external Hard Drive
(this is the step i am most unsure of how to proceed!!)
Could you guys let me know if totally off-base here as far as how to complete this task as painlessly as possible?

My wife has Windows 7 Pro 64-bit installed on an old clone desktop. I bought new parts and have built her a screaming new desktop PC, but when I tried to do a restore from the old to the new, it failed. I figured, okay, I am moving from an Intel dual core environment to an AMD quad core with a completely different chipset, so it's making Windows gag. I bought another copy of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, since I am going to rebuild the old machine later, and installed it on the new PC. Now it seems I am going to have to reinstall and reconfigure every program that is on her old PC. What a drag!
She has many programs and customizations, such as Fruity Loops, the GIMP, the Sims 3, MS Office 2007, Blender, and many others. Most - not all - of the data files on the old PC are on a separate partition, and I have successfully "restored" it to the new system. However, Fruity Loops and some other programs insisted on using the C Drive's user/documents folder for all their data, and Fruity Loops even uses system folders for some of her music files! It's a buggy way to do things, but it's her favorite music creation program, so I am duty-bound to get it transferred.

I have a Dell studio XPS desktop computer with windows 7 home premium service pack 1.The processor is an Intel i5 CPU,12gb of ram,64-bit system. I have noticed that recently when I navigate to different screens the web pages will not load up fast until I move the cursor slightly. If I do not move the cursor the page takes forever to load up. I have run scans for viruses and everything comes up negative. I have also changed out the mouse but it still does the same thing. What would cause this and how can I fix the problem.

I would like to come up with a way to provide a full backup computer to my customers (offline, process control application). Currently doing this with WinXP and a hot-swap RAID-1 enclosure. If anything in computer1 dies, can quickly move the cables and the drive over to computer2, boot up and keep running. Now moving to Windows 7, more strict activation issues. Getting a separate windows license for each computer is not a problem, but how to either change the license key easily after the swap, or avoid activation altogether? Typical system is offline, possibly abroad and would like to make the failover as easy as possibly for customers.

Win 7 Freecell "sticks" The cards don't move when you try to move them. If you keep trying you get the message "freecell is not responding" or "problem with freecell executable". Could this have anything to do with a recent Norton upgrade? I have tried turning windows games on and off and it doesn't help. If so, where can I get a clean reinstall?

I have a desktop with a 250GB HDD that has Vista Ultimate installed on it. I recently added a 64GB SSD and installed 7 Professional on it. All is working well as a dual boot system, but at this point I would like to format the 250GB drive and use it for data storage. Problem is that since it was the original drive when I added the SSD and Windows 7, I believe that the MBR is on that drive. When I physically disconnect it, I get a message to put in my 7 install disk, but when I to try to repair it, it shows no OS to repair. So, can I move, change or create a new MBR on the SSD or am I going to need to just do another clean install of 7 on the 64GB drive without the 250GB drive attached, then attach it and format it?

I can't move more than one folder at the same time. Also, when I move that one folder, just the contents in the folder move - not the folder itself. How do I do this? I want to move a number of consecutive folders at once. I should mention that these folders are subfolders of the Windows folder.

Copying and pasting files is easy. But how do I move files so they no longer appear in original location. The time has come for me to make some room on my hard drive and the way to do it is move all the pictures to another drive. What is the command to do this? Isn't drag and drop copying and not moving? I suppose I could copy then come back and delete. But moving would be better I think. Less chance for a mistake

I have an issue with my USB mices, they don't work. The mouse cursor won't move an inch. It's lit up and the Steelseries driver "Engine" makes it very clear that the mouse is recognized by the computer. I can play around with the lights and the settings but the cursor won't move. I have been googling for hours and tried many fixes without success.
I have tried: Tweaking the BIOS and the USB mouse support option, deleting different keys in regedit, deleting and reinstalling drivers. I got the problem after I changed the PSU. The mouse would work but it stuttered forward and the movement wasn't smooth at all until it completely stopped moving. I have since switched back to my old PSU to no avail. I'm suspecting that there is a power issue, maybe a setting changed when I switched PSU.

I have used many cloning software.
- Macrium Reflect
- EaseUS Disk Copy & Todo Backup
- RoboCopy
- Paragon Backup & Recovery
I'd like to move Windows from one drive to another without backing up THEN restoring. This is an extra step that I consider unnecessary.RoboCopy ALMOST did it correctly. But it corrupted the Outlook Registry. Microsoft recommended to uninstall and re-install Office.

I'm helping someone with there Windows 7 Professional. They can't update it or get certain features to work. I know it is because they are on an old Work Domain. They no longer work for that company. But the Laptop is there's.I went to System and "changed settings" under "Computer Name Domain and Workgroup settings".I changed from "Work Network" to "Home Network".After restarting, ALL of there configurations and settings were gone. Outlook, ACT!, etc needed to be setup again. But the computer was able to access the features that they needed.Apparently the user account that we were using to log in into, was no longer available.I did a system restore to right before I changed to Home Network. How do I change to "Home Network" from "Work Domain" while still keeping ALL user settings, but getting rid of the lockdown that the Domain Policies Enforced?

You cannot move appp around in windows as windows makes DLL files and registry entry and moving it will break it.Also Microsoft wants people to use shortcuts and moving apps will break the shortcuts of path of the files.
In OS X all files needed to to run the app are glued with the app and in windows you must run the installer to make the directory where it will copy all files to run the app ,make path ,make the shortcuts and DLL files and registry entry .
Moving files around break the DLL files and registry entry .Part of this is to stop illegal copying. In windows people use the installer to remove or install app we never move app around like in OS X .
Also most time apps have to run in system level in windows not like OS X It is not the scopes of Linux ,windows ,OS X security myths but the thread got little of topic of talking about moving appp around in windows and other OS.

The power supply went out on my Win 7 box(custom built) and so I decided to put it into my granddaughter's Dell box which was running Win XP. I unplugged the XP hdd, plugged in the Win 7 hdd, but it will not complete opening Windows.I've tried using a Win 7 Recovery CD, but none of the 3 I have will boot! So, I used the Win 7 DVD and can get to the install screen, where I've tried the 'repair' option. But, that gives a message that it is unable to repair the computer.
