Need Permission To Move This File?
Jul 28, 2012
I am running Windows 8. I know this forum is for Windows 7, but the Windows 8 forum is under developed and doesn't really have any members yet.I am selling my laptop, so I'm installing Windows 7 since I have Windows 8 now. I was going to install it off a flash drive. Every time I go to try to transfer the Windows 7 Starter files onto the flash drive, I can't transfer 1 file. It says I need to permission to move it

Fed up with this error. I'm trying to copy some files from one external backup drive to another, both connected to the laptop via USB, and Windows won't let me.Sometimes it's Windows access code 5, but if I use a different explorer it simply tells me I don't have the necessary permissions to copy the file. It' numerous files that are affected, but a fraction of the total amount.I've tried to zip the files up, no joy. I've tried to copy them elsewhere then to the drive, no joy. I've tried to reset the permissions on the file, no joy. I've changed my permissons so that I have full administrator rights, no joy.

The contents of several file and folders has gone missing. This includes the "My Pictures" library (my biggest concern) and a few others. Like a couple random Games, Steam, just odd seemingly random folders. This may have been caused by some recent changes, which I will get into- but I am pretty close to just saying several thousand pictures are just...gone.Secondary Problem: I recently had a pretty scary ordeal with the user profiles on my machine. When attempting to login, it would state that the User settings had been altered and would not let me log in. That has been taken care of now, but I feel the two problems are connected, and this is why:Several days ago I was attempting to install a Logitech Web Camera onto my Windows 7 X86 OS. Logitech does not provide drivers for this OS or support the installation, but I have in fact been able to install it in the past with some clever workarounds. While attempting to re-create the troublesome install I had used in the past I caused the Profile problem. The Logitech cam Drivers (Model V-uu22 Drivers for Vista if that is important) touch many parts of the machine they are installed on. There is a sub-folder that is installed in the "My Pictures" folder for storing your webcam snapshots, then a folder in the "Movies" library for a similar function. There is also a sub folder that is placed in the user profile area that stores your user information (I assume) So, while installing these drivers and trying to get them to work again my machine froze up mid-install and demanded a reboot. Upon reboot the user profile would not let me login, then when I rebooted once more to attempt to fix it, the boot file was destroyed. So, in goes the recovery disc, boot from CD and fixed the boot.ini file. Finally gain access to the windows logon and still the problem remains. It took hours to figure this whole thing out. booted into safe mode, deleted the improper SID (SP?) for the users that had somehow been created and ended up just having to use a restore point to undo all the changes. Long story short, I got it working and now the file contents are all wonky.
Now, seeing as I used a restore point to fix the issues, I don't see how the logitech install could have been the culprit, but all of my pictures are gone. I have searched the machine, used a file recovery service, looked all over and now I am coming here.Steps taken to find pictures: File recovery, Showing hidden files, searching all files, Ensuring that the user profiles had not been damaged, lots of google searches, you name it.I did notice, however, that there were hidden files and folders on both my drives that are labeled "pictures", "movies" etc. But I cannot access them. I am on an administrator account, I attempted to change the file permissions using the properties interface of the folders and do not have access, even tried the takedown command on them, but I am not using FAT. I simply have no idea what to do now.
Another thing of note: I use my XBOX 360 to wireless stream content from my machine to the Televisions in my home. I notice that the pictures all made it to the Console, and are viewable- but it seems as if the XBOX has created another User profile that I have no access to and moved the items in question there. All in all this has been very perplexing, and I know the pictures are there, somewhere, and have not been deleted- I just have trouble wrapping my head around what user profile they may be in and how to gain access to that folder.
Specs: MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1, AMD Athlon II X2 245 Regor 45nm Technology, Mobo: ASRock M3A770DE, AMD Radeon HD 6800.
I also have Hijackthis reports and have run full anti-virus and anti spyware on the machine several times.

I am trying to move a .dll file from one of my folders in Downloads to Program Files (x86)/some_folder, but it keeps showing "you require permission from my_machine/Owner to make changes to this file", so I can't finish the job; I tried take owner ship of the dll file, but it didn't work.
Here is what I tried: First of all, I changed the own ship of the .dll file located in Download folder to my_machine/Owner(full control), and then i changed the own ship of program files(x86)/destination folder to my_machine/Owner(full control) as well; then tried to move the dll file to the destination, failed. Then I turned off the UAC, tried but failed again. The error msg is still "you require permission from my_machine/Owner to make changes to this file".

For days now, I've been looking to solve an issue I'm having regarding the permission settings. For whatever reason I simply cannot move a specific dll file, I then get the following message : "you require permissions from Everyone to make changes to this file" ==> it says "make changes" although all I want to do is copy and paste the dll file elsewhere...
So far, I've tried running the takeownership program, I've ran Registry Booster (who knows?), of course my user account settings are on "never notify me" AND YET I just can't copy/paste this dll file. I've got all the latest Win7 (64-bit) updates, AVG 9 AV+firewall (which I even turned off), I'm running an AMD Phenom II x4 3.00 Ghz, 4,00 GB RAM...and that's about it I guess.

As far as I know I have full administrative privileges and UAC is off. I am the sole user and this is the only account. I tried to install a new version of VMware Stand Alone Converter. I right clicked and ran as administrator. It asked about removing old version and I checked OK. It runs and pops up a box at end with this fault:
Error 1326. Error getting file security:
C:usersJoeSloclsvmwareGetlasterror:5
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. This is the first software I've ever had a problem with. Is this a Windows problem or a VMware problem? Does VMware Workstation need admin privileges even though it's a separate program?

I once deleted Windows 7 installation files on one of my drives using a Linux distro. Now all the files appear in a folder named ".Trash-0" and now when I try to delete the folder it says "You need permission from trusted installer to make changes to this file". I tried deleting the folders using another Linux distro but the folder is nowhere to be found when I boot using a Linux distro. I guess this is happening because Windows doesn't let you delete windows installation files even if they do not belong to the current installation. Is there a work around for this?

I've recently restored my Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OS on to a new SSD using Macrium Reflect. My hosts file has always contained entries for local websites and has always worked until now. After much hair pulling and reading of forums, the only way that I could get the DNS Client to read and process the hosts file was by adding the "NETWORK SERVICE" user permission to it. It already had "SYSTEM", "Administrators" and "Users" (my user account). This was never required before, so I'm confused as to what has happened to require it now?

I'm not sure if this may be more of a vmware issue, but I figured I'd start here. Basically I have a 56gig vmdk file, that refuses to move. The vm is not broken at all and works fine. I've moved several vm's off my laptop drive onto this new usb drive. I'm working with an alienware m11x r3 with a 750gb 7200rpm drive & a usb 3.0 wd my passport external drive that IS using drive compression. (blue text for file/folder names) I've tried to move this file via explorer and tera copy. both fail. in the explorer scenario, I've burnt at least the weekend attempting to get this file off my drive. in a few cases it gets down to just a smidgen of space in the transfer progress bar with a 'theoretical hour remaining', but that was 10 hours ago. when I'd look in resource manager,it starts off in a normal read from c drive and write to d drive action. but at the end, it is just writing, and its moving at like 700kb a sec.

I have big file (133Gb) backup file on my hard drive and I wanted to move this to external hard drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Drive). When I tried it to move or copy to the external I've got message: Error 0x8007045D: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. I was looking online for some help and I found some advice that I have to make chkdsk in cmd mode but when I tried I've got message: "Chkdsk" is not recognized as a internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I don't know how to solve this problem. Can someone help me? My OS is win 7 Enterprise x86.

I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on a SSD (120 GB Intel X-25M), and now I'm juggling with the dilemma of what to do with the page file. There doesn't seem to be a consensus on this issue from my internet research. Here's the situation as it stands: I have 8GB of RAM, and windows has created a 8GB page file.
1) Keep everything as is
2) Move the page file to another hdd (a WD caviar black)
3) Keep the page file on the SSD, but shrink it to 1 or 2GB
(Some people simply disabled their page file. I've ruled out this option as overkill)
a. Page file will will shorten SSD life span
b. counter-argument: maybe, but that is an over-blown concern for modern SSDs
c. If you have enough RAM (8 gigs is certainly that), the page file is useless
Most of my research was from 2009 threads and discussions though. Have things changed? Is there a better understanding of this topic now to render a verdict? I'm leaning towards shrinking my page file to 2GB (and leave it on the SSD) as a compromise between every concern.

Since 2 days, in a certain folder, I cant rename, move or delete folders or files. Now, it has spread to my desktop as well. If I rename a folder, even a new folder, the name changes ''magically'' within seconds to restore to its previous name. If I move the folder or file, it comes back and if I delete it, it restores. I tried to make a system restore, even format (!), the problem persists. I use this folder to tag and rename my new mp3s so I have to be able to 1) rename, 2) move the folders the files and folders in it.

However, when I do this the security settings of the old folder do not copy over.
I would like the same settings to copy over. How do you do that?

i have 4gb ram and 2 hard drives on my computer, one is 10000rpm 32GB velociraptor used as a system disk and second is 7200rpm WD 500gb! I want to move paging file to the second disc because of low space on system drive! I know how to do that but i want to know the correct way of doing this! Because some resources claims that it is good to keep around 1GB on the OS drive because Windows needs still some pagefile space on the OS drive i.e. url...somwhere i've read to left the minimum paging file on the system drive which is i mean 16mb and some resources claims that the correct way is to disable absolutely paging on the system drive and move it whole to the second physicial drive i.e. here: url...So which one of these ways are most correct? If i disable completely paging on the system drive it will not be a significant performance hit? How it is with paging in Windows 7 x64? What is your opinion and why it so? And finally how big static size of page file i have to set?
