Windows 7 Pro 32 Won't See Network, Won't Honor Static IPv4

Mar 18, 2012

We set up three new terminals this week at the office; they're all running Win 7 Pro 32-bit. I set them all up simultaneously (literally sat at a desk and entered the same keystrokes at each of them), so I don't see any obvious reason that one is behaving differently from the other two. The essential problem is that the terminal doesn't see the Internet.

Here are all the particulars that I think might be interesting, listed in no particular order:

- The terminal ran fine for several hours. Email access, Internet access, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. At that point, the user called me to show me a dialog box. I used System Restore to go back in time to 9 a.m. in case the user had somehow managed to do anything (though she's not an admin).

- IPv6 is disabled.

- The workplace uses Static IPs. The IP address is entered correctly in the IPv4 properties (x.x.x.213), but at cmd / ipconfig, I get this result: "Autoconfiguration IPv4 address: 169.254.95.187"

- In Network and Sharing Center, the network (which is only known as Unidentified Network) is set to type Public. When I reset it to type Work and reboot, it resets to type Public.

Does Win 7 Ultimate Edition Support Both 32 And 64 ?

Oct 9, 2009

I would like to ask this straightforward question: does Windows 7 Ultimate Edition support both 32 and 64 bits? I have a legal copy of it and installed it on my Vista Business PC, but it seems to be running at 32 bits only. Is it because of this Vista only supporting 32 bits? How do you tell the bits your OS is running at?

Windows 7 Ultimate Edition?

Dec 30, 2010

I bought Windows 7 Ultimate edition and installed it on my laptop. This laptop has a Windows media centre edition 2002 cd key sticker attached.I then went on to install vmware and tried to install windows xp mce on it.Now I lost the recovery disk supplied and the laptop manufacturer asked me to pay in order to re-deliver the disk. So I downloaded Windows XP MCE 2005 OEM edition instead but it does not take the cd key I was supplied it with. Here is my question,a. Why isn't the windows accepting my cd key prior to the installation? I thought the cd key supplied from laptop are all OEM copies and I am using the same machine?Could it be due to the different cpu and ram amount allocation? [i.e. allocating 1 cpu to vmware while the machine has 2?] I upgraded my hard disk and installed additional 1gb ram. Apart from these all other devices are identical

Migrating Windows 7 HP Edition To New SSD?

Jul 18, 2012

I just bought a new Hp Pavilion dv7-6b11. It comes with preinstalled Windows 7 64bit Home Premium. I also installed a new ssd drive. I want to have as primary the ssd with Windows 7 and secondary the original hdd. I mean I want the Hp's Windows 7 version to be installed in my new ssd disk. Ok, I thought I could download Windows 7 original and activate it with my stickers serial. But what about the drivers which are already preintalled? I think it's a classic problem (the "I bought a new laptop, I installed a new ssd and I want to install the original-preinstalled Windows 7 on ssd") but I haven't found a proper solution.

No Or Limited Network

Dec 19, 2009

Long waited problem still waits to be solved.

My internet is on ISP Cable.

I had many problems with Cable Operators.

Once upon a time, I could connect computer and laptop on my Motorola SB5101e modem, since it has ethernet and USB.

Suddenly, something changed, and no long I can connect both.

Now, if I try to connect laptop (and regularly using internet on computer previously), on laptop will be "No or limited connectivity (laptop is XP).

I asked Cable operator why is this, and they said that it has to be like that, bla bla...

Somethimes, I lose connection on my computer, and "no or limited..." shows, exclamation mark also.

Well, it's not written "no or limited..", because computer is on my native language.

I saw that some user on this forum, whose nick is "zay", said that this can be easily bypassed if Cable is used as ISP.

I know that there's problem with ip configuration (or protocol).

Somethimes, if this problem can't be solved just by turning computer and modem off, I have to call cable operator to say him to "restart (or reset) "something"".

What do they "restart" (or reset)?

After that, everything works fine.

So, I would like to know what do they do in that kind of situation (what they do reset), and is there any possibility for me to solve that without calling them?

64-bit Edition To Support Over 64 Logical Processors

Dec 28, 2008

"Windows 7 will be able to take advantage not only of faster CPUs, but of multiple processors on a single chip. The 64-bit edition of the operating system in particular will be able to support over 64 Logical Processors per machine.

In this regard, Microsoft underlined the need for software developers to adapt their applications in accordance with the evolution of processor chips and that of the Windows operating system.

Essentially, consistent gains in performance are synonymous with using parallel programming techniques in concordance with many-core processors. This is where non-uniform memory access (NUMA) comes in.

“The 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 support more than 64 Logical Processors (LP) on a single computer,” Phil Pennington, Windows Server Technical Evangelism, revealed. “New processors are now appearing that leverage non-uniform memory access (NUMA) architectures.

Within the near future, a system with 4 CPU sockets, 8 processor-cores per socket, and with Simultaneious Multi-Threading (SMT) enabled per core, will achieve 64 Logical Processors. Many server-class solutions will need to be architected with NUMA awareness in order to achieve linear performance scaling on 64+ LP systems.”

NUMA is a designed to allow a way around the limitations of the processor bus. Because of its non-linear characteristics, each processor is more intimately connected with its proximate memory, rather than with all the memory available. Unlike the Symmetric Multi-Processor (SMP) model, in which processors are all on par when it comes down to memory and I/O access, NUMA allows for memory access optimization.

“There is nothing the matter with NUMA – machines with non-uniform memory access speeds – of course, other than the fact that they introduce complex, hardware-specific programming models if you want to build applications that can harness their performance and capacity effectively.

What is decidedly new is the extent to which previously esoteric NUMA architecture machines are becoming mainstream building blocks for current and future application servers. For the connected applications of the future, our ability to build programming models that help server application developers deal with complex NUMA architecture performance considerations is the singular challenge of the many-core era,” Windows Performance Engineer Rick Vicik explained. Asus M2N32 Sli Wireless Edition

Sep 15, 2009

Just got windows 7 the other day for my laptop and I'm loving it so far. Runs absolutely fab on my HP DV9000. However I'm having some issues with wireless driver compatibility for my gaming machine. I'm running 64 bit windows 7 and I'm having to manually install the 64 bit driver for the built in wireless card for my motherboard. I install the driver, it detects the device no problem, and I can even see wireless networks. However when I try to connect to my home network, after I put the WPA-PSK passphrase in, it automatically fails to connect right away. I am convinced this is a driver issue because it works flawlessly on my vista ultimate 64 bit install.

Has anyone else had a problem with this board/driver?

The internal wireless card is the Asus WiFi AP-Solo module (realtek 81somethingorother chip name, I'll grab it when I get home)

Switching To SSD With Windows 7 Upgrade Edition

Nov 26, 2011

I just ordered an SSD and will be migrating my Windows 7 64 install over to it. Most people seem to say I should do a fresh install instead of cloning the old drive. Currently my OS is on a partition on my HDD, while the rest of my files reside on a different partition on the same drive.

Where this gets slightly trickier is that my version of Windows 7 is an upgrade edition. From what I remember reading before my initial install, the installer is much happier and the process is much smoother if it can detect an existing Windows installation somewhere on the system. But on the other hand, everyone seems to advise disconnecting all drives but the SSD when installing (to avoid having the boot loader install on the wrong drive?).

I can't have it both ways. The closest I've found to someone with my same dilemma is here: Upgrade Installation - To new SSD From XP

It sounds like in the end he had to do the reinstall workaround (install Windows 7 again over the invalidated installation).

Clean Install With Upgrade Edition

May 6, 2009

As you may know, you can purchase Windows Vista Upgrade Edition at half the price of the full version, and do a clean install from a blank system pretty easily - you do a clean install but do not enter the product key, then do a re-install from boot and this time enter your upgrade key - voila, a clean full install of Vista.

This is useful for those of us who own a previous version of Windows but want to do a clean install (previous versions of Windows allowed us to insert previous CD to prove ownership but Vista doesn't for some reason).

Does anyone know if this trick will be available for Windows 7? As a genuine owner of Vista, I aim to buy the upgrade edition of Windows 7 but always do clean installs and never 'soft' upgrades so I don't want to have to install Vista first each time.
