Long Filename Objects Not Copying - How To Locate

Mar 22, 2011

When I copy folders from hdd to ext.hdd (or the reverse), sometimes I get a dialogue informing me that some file's names were too long for the destination. It gives me the option to skip or cancel. What really sux here is that I am not beinginformed/being provided with a list of what files did not make the journey.Anyone else run into this and is there a solution? Perhaps some copy/move setup parameter that I am not aware of?

The Filename Or Extension Is Too Long?

Jan 3, 2010

I'm trying to delete something I recovered off the HD, and now I can't delete it. I can't rename, delete, cut, copy, anything. I've seen people say do it from CLI like abbreviating such as "del filename~1.txt" or whatever t he extension is... but even that gives the error saying its too long. how to forcefully delete a file if its name is too long?

"Filename Too Long For Destination Folder"?

Sep 30, 2010

Much to my surprise Win7 told me ina popup that a filename with approx. 30 chars is too long for the destination folder when I try to move the file to another directory.From my point of view the concatenated path+filename is long but not too long.At least there would be no error under good old WinXP.

Windows 7 - Destination Path Too Long When Copying

Nov 6, 2012

Destination Path Too Long when Copying I copied my data folders/files from my winXP C-drive to my external hard-drive & then to my new win7 C-drive. After about 20-25 minutes of copying (with 5 seconds remaining) ... I got the attached message ... (2 found) ... I clicked Skip ... same message again (1 found) ... I clicked Skip ... same message again (0 found) ... I clicked Skip. "You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location that has a shorter path." I compared the "JAR Control Panel Buttons" source & destination folders & found 3 files that were not copied. Not knowing how much too long the paths were, I guessed & they copied OK with shortened names.

Can't Get Objects On Bottom Of Screen

May 17, 2012

I have had computer games before but never ever experienced the problems I have with the HP games. My passwords have not been recognized, the games are incredibly difficult to download and when they finally are something is always not Kosher. Now that Sherlock Holms has been downloaded and the program begun, there are no objects at the bottom of the screen to identify (picture too large?) and no way to get out except to hit "escape".

Colored Dots And Objects At Top Of Screen

Nov 6, 2009

When my computer finishes starting up, it ends with what looks like blobs of colored pixels in a line at the top of my screen. This happened for the first time tonight and I have no clue what happened. I took out my video card and plugged my monitor into the mother boards vga slot. Same result. Then i used a HDMI cable from my monitor to my motherboards HDMI slot. Still, with the same result. I plugged my Xbox 360 up to monitor with the HDMI cable and it looks fine so it's not on the monitor's end.

When the computer is loading, the screen stays black. Then when my desktop would normally show is when the pixels show up and the rest of the screen is black.

Include Inheritable Permissions From This Objects Parent

Dec 8, 2012

This is a brand new machine with a brand new install of Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit SP1. I'm having a problem with the inheritable permissions. In the Advanced Security Settings for one of my games, I'm trying to Include Inheritable Permissions From This Objects Parent. The check box has a check in it and it is grayed out but under Inherited From, is shows <not inherited>.

I click on Change Permissions, the Include Inheritable Permissions isn't grayed out and has a check in the box but when I click on Apply, it doesn't change the inheritable permissions. It's probably something I'm not savvy enough to catch but I think I'm at the limit of my knowledge with this. It shows me as Owner with all permissions but still having a problem getting it to start without a pop up asking if I want to let it run.

Windows 7 Filename Structure?

Jan 2, 2013

I am trying to copy/merge files from an external harddrive onto my c:driveI am getting the option quite frequently (too often to work around manually), standard windows screen to resolve duplicate filename conflict- ie. copy and replace; don't copy; or copy but keep both files.my problem/query is that the filenames are not the same...eg. "EXTRAC~2.XLS" trying to overwrite "Extractps.xls". by appearance (and even checking file properties) those filenames are strictly very different.I tried to research, and suspect it has something to do with filename structures (I am running windows 7 home premium x64), but cannot get succinct onfirmation/explanation of this nor the simplest course of action to resolve- ie. is my system somehow 'shadowing' the long filename in a way that I cannot see, and which could be defaulted as the 8.3 filename that otherwise appears totally different in windows explorer? I had read this is a possibility to maintain backwards compatibility, but do I need this turned-on, and if not how to turn-off?

Enable External Media Objects In PowerPoint Viewer 2010

Aug 29, 2011

I have a Powerpoint presentation with embedded video clips. The Smart Art doesn't animate correctly in Powerpoint 2003 (which, unfortunately, is still being used by a large number of people who need to view these files). Solution 1: I packaged for CD and included PowerPoint Viewer 2007 Outcome: The Smart Art still DOESN'T animate; Embedded videos WILL play

Solution 2: Instruct the end users to download and install PowerPoint Viewer 2010 Outcome: The Smart Art DOES animate; Embedded videos will NOT play.

I discovered that if I open the presentation file in PowerPoint 2010 I get a warning that external medial objects have been blocked. If I click the Enable Content button, then close Powerpoint and go back to Powerpoint Viewer 2010 (on the same computer) embedded video WILL play. How does someone who does not have the full version of Powerpoint 2010 open the presentation file and enable content?

To make things even more complicated... I just opened the Help menu in Viewer. -> The Media tab indicates shortcuts for start, stop, volume, etc. Then, I opened the readme file. -> "PowerPoint Viewer does not support running macros, programs, or opening linked or embedded objects". That's a bit contradictory, isn't it? Media IS an embedded object, is it not?!

Search Files With Metachars In Filename (ex: "+")

Aug 3, 2010

I just upgraded from WinXP to Windows 7. I have a folder with a lot of files that have either plus or minus/dashes ("-") in the file name, sometimes more than one. For example, some filenames might be:

Matterhorn +++.wmv
Space Mountain ++-.avi
Star Tours +.mp3
Star Tours (second day) ++++.mp3

I used this for my own filing system methods and sorting.In WinXP, searching for all files with "+++" with the Search box was no problem, but in Windows 7 the search box returns the plus ("+") sign as a global/metacharacter, such as "*", and expands the character to match a global value. As such, the listing I get for the above search gives me all files with three chars in a row, as substituted by the "+" signs. This is obviously incorrect.Is there any way to escape the metachar value so that I get the literal value in my search? or, is there a "classic XP" search style available?

I tried to run the installer, but that also gave me an error message that it couldn't locate "vc_red.msi" in yet another folder with a very long name. This time, it was looking for the folder/file on an external drive.

I have done a complete system search for Outlook.pst and I have found nothing.

As a result of this, Outlook will not even start in order for me to create a new file from within Outlook.
