Windows 7 - Destination Path Too Long When Copying
Nov 6, 2012
Destination Path Too Long when Copying I copied my data folders/files from my winXP C-drive to my external hard-drive & then to my new win7 C-drive. After about 20-25 minutes of copying (with 5 seconds remaining) ... I got the attached message ... (2 found) ... I clicked Skip ... same message again (1 found) ... I clicked Skip ... same message again (0 found) ... I clicked Skip. "You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location that has a shorter path." I compared the "JAR Control Panel Buttons" source & destination folders & found 3 files that were not copied. Not knowing how much too long the paths were, I guessed & they copied OK with shortened names.

I decided to come here because everyone here is far more helpful then over on the microsoft site. My first question is I am modding my sims 2 game. I use to be able to copy the file into my downloads folder no problem. I did an update a few days ago and now all of a sudden as I am copying them I get file destination name is to long for the folder. I have renamed them and it helps but it sucks doing it when I never had the problem before.Next question I asked on the microsoft forums over a week ago and no answer. My media player has doubles of each album. It really sucks when I am listening to my media player and have to listen to the album twice. I tried taking them out resetting it and at first it only put the first one and then sure enough it redoubled them. I don't know if it is because I have itunes. How can I fix this please? Is it because of itunes? Is it something I just have to live with and choose to use itunes or media player and not have both?

How can I find out which of my files path names were too long?I'm backing up my files from one external drive to another (just dragged a giant folder over and waited over a day for it to paste the entire thing), now I come to read "The file name(s) would be too long for the destination folder. You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location with a shorter path." The destination folder saimply reads "CD2", which could literally be anything. What's the entire path?I've got Windows 7.So I'd gladly shorten whatever path(s) and try again, but how do I read entire path of which files were too long to be in which destination folder?Don't know what to do, the window is still popped up that has the option of either "Skip" or "cancel" along which a check box at the bottom that reads "do this for all current items (11 found)", I haven't clicked anything yet.

I just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 last weekend and I must say its been a really bad decision, Win7 is not so much of an improvement to me. We always think the grass is greener. The other idiot thing I did or didn't do was not back up so I could roll back to Vista so I am stuck with this now and I really hate it.
My issue (1 of many) is I can't delete a folder, I am guessing its some residual from Vista its 'My Documents' but inside it is an endless list of empty folders 'My Documents/My Music/My Documents/My Music/My Documents/My Music/My Documents/My Music...etc.
When I try to delete I get this message... "The source file names are larger than is supported by the file system. Try moving to a location which has a shorter path name, or try renaming to shorter names before attempting this operation" I have tried everything, I have tried renaming every file in the folder, they just keep coming back, no matter how many i delete. I have tried using software such as Unlocker or devices to delete on boot, I have moved the folders location, even tried mapping a drive and deleting with command prompt - nothing.
I am at a loss, I have been trying to delete this thing since last sunday night after the upgrade, i must have spent hours doing this. Done everything suggested here: Cannot delete file or folder | Windows Problem Solver

When I copy folders from hdd to ext.hdd (or the reverse), sometimes I get a dialogue informing me that some file's names were too long for the destination. It gives me the option to skip or cancel. What really sux here is that I am not beinginformed/being provided with a list of what files did not make the journey.Anyone else run into this and is there a solution? Perhaps some copy/move setup parameter that I am not aware of?

Much to my surprise Win7 told me ina popup that a filename with approx. 30 chars is too long for the destination folder when I try to move the file to another directory. From my point of view the concatenated path+filename is long but not too long.At least there would be no error under good old WinXP.

Why is this. Like 10 minutes plus and it still says recycling. It should only take a second. Is it bad to let it continue at its own pace or should I restart the PC and try it again?

i have a media server set up where i store all my media files so they are shared with my household. The problem is that when i try and do anything in the shared folder (mapped as a network drive) i get a "destination folder access denied: you need permission to perform this action). All OS's is Windows 7 Pro.single shared(called Shared) folder with sub-folders where the administrator group is owner and the user credentials i use to log on the mapped network drive with are member of the administrator group. every member of the household have a different username.i have tried disabling UAC, adding the user directly to the folder with full permissions and still no dice.i am able to play the media files but if i want to edit a file or make a new folder i get the access denied error.

I was applying the some updates to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and the update process failed. I shut down the computer and when it rebooted, the computer reported my Internet connection was down. My computer is still getting an IP address and DNS settings from the router. I can ping 127.0.0.1 but as soon as I try to ping my router I get the destination host net unreachable message
- I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling IPv4 (netsh int IP reset C: esetlog.txt & netsh Winsock reset (both as administrator))
- I have tried uninstalling .NET since that is one of the upgrades that failed.
- I have tried re-running Windows Update to see if the updates which had downloaded would install (failed)
Windows troubleshooter is worthless as it keeps suggesting the network cable is unplugged or broken.

I downloaded a 4GB .mkv file of a concert I wanted to watch. But since this was on my netbook, I tried to transfer the file to a 16GB Kingston USB Drive which is empty as I have bought it new. However I get an error saying that the "file is too large for the destination file system" and thus, cannot move my file to the USB. What is going wrong here? Here's a picture of the popup that occurs.

When I download something from the web with my new netbook, it looks like this. There's nothing to press and no destionation folder to choose.
What the hell am I supposed to do? Also, any window with a OK/cancel button thing at the bottom of the window, those buttons are not visible and can only be viewed slightly if I drag the window as far up as possible

When I open a windows office file from the internet (Word or Powerpoint) and I then I go to save it via "save as", it automatically opens the temp file as the save destination, not the folder I most recently had open, or the folder where I've saved the previous 20 files I've downloaded.
Is there a way to direct the default save file to open not as temp but as what I want it to?

last night I had a new destination showing on my list of networks called SEXBOX. Had been working so decided to wait till this morning to investigate. It has gone now.
I have a small home network. Not fully operating yet. I need to study here more to understand. XP and Windows 7. I may not be the only people on my system as I have some others sharing the house.
I do occasionally open the naughties but never absolutely never join anything or down load anything or give my email etc. And I am careful not to click the wrong button. But I must respect the professionalism of those who wish to make me. it is their business so I must accept the possibility.
I have googled SEXBOX and gotten little save to say that some say it is a Sony name. I could not verify that.
It is not there now. it could have been someone else logged in with a fun named machine. It has gone now. Concerned though and would like to know if anyone has come across the same.

I'm working as Guest under Windows 7 Ultimate. I have a USB hard disk with 2 partitions connected to the computer. All NTSC."Security Information" shows exactly the same usernames with the same rights and the same ownership for both partitions. The problem is, I can write without problems to one of the partitions, but not to the other. It say "DESTINATION FOLDER ACCESS DENIED".

Let's say " 01 - come.aaa" (A space at the beginning) is the file name.I am trying to change it to "01 - come.aaa"(without the space at the beginning).I am coming up with this error: "Source and destination file names are the same".1) Is this fixable? How?2) How can I find all files on my computer (and external drives) with a space at the beginning in the filename (and of course how can I change them with this error coming up)?3) Is it a problem to have a space at the beginning in the filename (These files will be used in Mac and Linux too) ?

I have been a computer consultant for decades ans I have NEVER heard this simple, singular issue addressed with other than MS pros cattily pretending to explain it away in words that mean nothing to the rest of us.I have had to radically emasculate several networks of security issues in order to get beyond this absurd barrier to the transfer of files over even the most simplistic of networks The pompous and non-assistive pretentious BS that MS experts vomit all over the web only adds insult to injury.I have two computers, a desktop and a notebook. Both are running Win 7 Home Premium. They both can see and use the files on the other but I CANNOT COPY OR MOVE ANY FILES FROM ONE TO THE ANOTHER.I would be delighted to have someone tell me how I might accomplish that/ they are even empowered to include in their explanation what a complete idiot I am not to have known how to do that before now.Whip me. Shame me before the world for my inability to understand how I might accomplish a task that should be a basic function of any network connectivity, but stop using such cryptic and unintelligible terms to describe the indescribable methodology as to pretend "the rest of us" might be In case you "experts" haven't noticed, NOBODY GETS IT!!

My laptop is not letting me copy anything onto USB flash drives. I'm using windows 7. I have already tried system restore and uninstalling the drive in Device Manager and Disabling write protection in the registry but to no avail. I am able to format the pen drive and also access files on it and copy files from it. But I am not able to paste files from my laptop onto the pen drive. It says "Destination folder access denied" and "You need permission to perform this action". I am running an administrator account. Also I am able to do everything normally in the case of a external HDD but again face the problem when trying to paste something to SD cards. I have taken ownership, run as administrator and also tried to drag-drop but to no avail. This not for just 1 particular file/folder. I am not able to copy anything to the USB and at the same time I am able to copy anything to the external HDD.

I have a system Image Backup of my C drive. It is located on a USB portable drive. I want to rename this backup. If I do rename it and later need to use it will I have problems?
That is, I renamed the folder from WindowsImageBackup to WindowsImageBackup_2009_11_03. If I ever needed to use it to restore a file, I'm supposing I can just change it back to WindowsImageBackup and all will be well. But this is a supposition on my part. I would like to find out now if there are problems, rather than later.
I am a little concerned because Windows 7 seems to be picky about the MediaID file. I wonder, for example, if I mount the backup after giving the WindowsImageBackup the new date specific name, I say, I wonder if this is going to affect MediaID. My nightmare is to think I am set up in case of an emergency, only to find that something like this is not in place.

My friend wants to take advantage of the Windows 7 upgrade prices, but he asked me an interesting question about whether or not he'd be eligible. He is currently running XP Pro, and I know that you qualify for the upgrade (by clean install) by having XP. However, he told me that his copy of XP isn't legitimate.
I'm not sure if he has a volume license installation or what, but he did tell me that Windows doesn't nag and appears as if it's genuine and activated. He wanted to know whether or not the Windows 7 upgrade disc would check for a genuine installation or if it would just recognize that XP was installed and that was good enough to qualify. I thought the latter was right, but he wanted me to ask around before he threw down the $50. Anyone have some insight?

copying a file to a Web Folder in Windows 7.I am able to connect to the web folder and see the subfolders. I am able to copy a local folder to the web folder as well. The only I am facing is when I am trying to copy a file. I am getting the error 0x80070057(The Parameter is incorrect). I have checked with fiddler and it does not look like its a server side issue. And I have also tried stopping most of the services as I read on the net that having 'Kaspersky' enabled and running interfered with the I/O for webdav.
