I am trying to transfer my entire user file onto an external hardrive. As soon as a drag and drop it over "external E" a window pops up that sais "this cannot happen because ntuser.dat is open in system." I have tried checking processes in the task manager but cannot find ntuser.dat in there. How I can sort it out.
How do I select a file and locate all shortcuts/copies of it? I have a personal file on a shared network drive at work. I created a shortcut to my personal file, in order to assign a Keyboard Shortcut to open it. I need to delete the shortcut I created, but leave the original personal file that I have on my shared network drive.
I have a original Windows 7 ultimate single user DVD and it is activated in a PC. Now I bought a new PC with upgraded components and don't want to run that original copy of windows 7 to the old PC. So is it possible to deactivate the windows 7 from the old PC and to activate in my new PC?
So, I want to deactivate Windows 7 on my old PC. Then install Windows 7 on my new PC and activate it with the same serial key..The person buying my old PC can still boot up and see it's working - he will just get some message that Windows isn't activated.
if I can temporaily deactivate in a LAPTOP the function keys (F1, F2 and so on, normally dedicated to functions like dimming, changing volume...), so I can use them for gaming? some games need that keys, but I cannot use them because they do something else...
When I plug in my headphones I can still hear sound coming from my computer, I checked and found out that it is actually coming from my computer's subwoofer, the only way to disable it is to actually lower the volume down to 0, even using mute will not turn off the subwoofer and will still play at the volume it is left at. I have tried searching for what could cause the problem, trying every possible combination of sound drivers that could be the source of the issue but I cant find the solution, does anyone know what could be happening? Windows has no information on these things and it seems to be something unique since I cant find a similar problem on google.
I have installed Windows 7 with upgrade media and activated with the supplied key. Unfortunately, this computer will not last much longer, and I will be replacing soon. Is it possible for me to deactivate my product key so I can install it on my replacement, or am I just out of a lot of money?
I'm looking for a solution for stopping the Network Type PoPup which appears after changing the network (eg. new UMTS network etc.)I found this how-to: Unidentified Networks - Set as Private or Public which automatically defines an undefined Network as punlic or private. This is a fisrt step but unfortunatelly the Popup still appears.I need this for unattened systems that does not allow user interaction and block my network for this system.
Each time I put the PC on, I can't use Internet before I deactive then reactive the network card. When it's run fine, I have a domestic network but when I start the Pc I have two networks, the domestic one and a new public one.
As soon as I desactive - reactive the network card, the public network desappear and all is ok as long as the PC stay on..
I'm a brand new user of Seven so perhaps it's just a simple tune I didn't do..
I have a laptop which came with Vista 32bit 2 years ago. I have purchased and installed an OEM Windows 7 but the computer can't seem to handle it (only 1 gig ram). I'd like to revert back to Vista installation that is partitioned on the hard drive because I'm convinced it will be faster.
My question is can I un-mate that new Windows 7 installation from this computer so I can use it on one of my other PCs? When it was installed I think I chose automatic activation. Am I screwed out of $120 now with two Windows installations mated to the same computer?
If I reformat and revert to Vista on the laptop, will the Windows 7 installation install itself on another pc with no issues?
I was trying to install a trial application today. During the installation I got an error message that said it couldn't locate "vc_red.msi" and was trying to look for it in the directory"c:c3cbe011cf829fa347582798c" I couldn't locate that folder either. So, I downloaded the x64 Visual C++ 2008 installer from the MS site. I tried to run the installer, but that also gave me an error message that it couldn't locate "vc_red.msi" in yet another folder with a very long name. This time, it was looking for the folder/file on an external drive.
Outlook 2010 will not find my .pst file. To my knowledge I have not deleted it. I have not used Outlook in quite some time and decided to start using it again.
I use Win 7. I have unhidden all of the system folders and hidden files. As I have gone into AppData/Local/Microsoft/Outlook I do not find the file in there.
I have done a complete system search for Outlook.pst and I have found nothing.
As a result of this, Outlook will not even start in order for me to create a new file from within Outlook.

I'm using Acronis Backup & Restore with Universal Restore (UR) to new hardware. UR is asking for driver pciven_1022&dev_7812&subsys_76951462&rev_03. I cannot locate this anywhere, although Driver Identifier shows it is installed in another OS instance (new install). where I can download this driver? Is there a way to extract a driver from within an existing Windows installation?

When I go to the search option and type in touch I see the device manager listed, and when I click on it I see the mouse and other pointing devices listed, but no touch pad listing. That is the only place I have checked.
Installed and was playing with file safety/encryption software that renamed my files names from document.doc to document.doc.xxx where the later version was encrypted. But then, I guess, I uninstalled the software. Have googleed .xxx many different ways and can't find the program.
I am running on Windows 7 home premium 64-bit. There is a legalnoticecaption and legalnoticetext enabled in the registry, and when I delete these values and restart, they re-appear! I've even tried deleting them altogether. I'm guessing there is some sort of script enabled that re-writes the registry values upon deletion
I decided to install Windows7 Home Premium on my HP dc5000 SFF. it installed fine but every time it reboots, I get an error that says."FATAL ERROR: Failed to locate necessary table(s) to make adjustments. Press any key to continue booting"This only happens when using the "restart" mode. if I use "shut down" and let the computer turn completely off, it will start with no errors!I've never seen anything like this and not able to find anything on Google or other boards
For 5 years I had good service from an orange top Toshiba laptop but have now upgraded to brand spanking new black top Toshiba laptop ... Oh, you need the technical stuff as well!
-Old: Toshiba Satellite M50 series (Windows XP Home/MS Office 2003 Pro). -New: Toshiba Satellite M745 (Windows 7/MS Office 2010 Pro) -Migration of data: Seagate external hard drive.
I have religiously backed up all data files on a routine basis and checked for function and accuracy before disposing of the trusty orange M50.I now have the sleek black M745 up and running and with the exception that I can't get my head around the differences between MS Office 2003 and 2010, all seems to be well apart from one particularly nasty 'showstopper'.The new laptop can't open any of the files, MS or otherwise, stored on the external HD. Although I can see the files on the HD and am told that there is data in the files, I get the message that the file path cannot be found. The vast majority of these files are MS Office documents, power-point files and Access databases (created in MS Office 2003). However, movie files also receive the same message.
