New Feature: Problems Step Recorder In Windows 7

Dec 1, 2008

You can use Problem Steps Recorder to automatically capture the steps you take on a computer, including a text description of where you clicked and a picture of the screen during each click (called a screen shot). Once you capture these steps, you can save them to a file that can be used by a support professional or someone else helping you with a computer problem.

PC Keeps Rebooting At Last Step Of Install

Jun 27, 2009

Everything about the install appears to be going fine, but at the last step when it says completing installation, i have problems.

It says it's going to reboot and then does. When it's starting back up, is says setup is updating the registry. Then it says setup is starting services. It restarts again and when it gets to the same spot, out of nowhere the PC reboots and gets to the same point before endless rebooting.

I tried installing both 32 and 64 bit versions but the same problem with both of them. The 32 bit version I was able to get installed just fine on 2 old XP computers my friend had, so I know the disc itself is good.

I've tried just about everything I can think of but can't get past this issue. And every attempt is a big deal because I have to then restore my PC back to the original factory condition and it takes time. I don't have another PC of my own to troubleshoot with either. I've tried raising the RAM to 4GB but that had no effect. I'm sorta a beginner so any help is greatly appreciated.

1 Step System Restore Dvd?

Oct 16, 2009

i work for a local computer store, and i have always done our restore disks using ghost 2003, the dos .exe.. and it has worked fine..

Problem is now we have started pumping out Windows 7 machines and i cannot for the life of me get ghost to create a proper restore dvd, they always get a bootmgr error, i can run the repair off a Windows 7 dvd and that fixes it.. but thats not alot of help. (if you have ever delt with a end user you would know that everything has to be 1 touch and drool proof)

Anyway, anyone found any options for a good restore dvd setup? or a way around the bootmgr problem?

I have tried the old vista BCDEDIT and of course that doesn't work..

i have tried -FDSP, no go...

Any other ideas?

Step After Enabling Virtualization In BIOS

Jun 10, 2009

After you save your settings please follow this important step below in order for VT to work properly.

1. Enable VT in bios (where the option is, depends on your MoBo manufacturer)

2. Save BIOS Settings

3. Exit BIOS

4. Shut Down PC (some PC's will shut down automatically for about 3-4 seconds when you save the BIOS. Some will NOT)

5. Leave PC off for about 5-10 seconds

6. Boot PC

you should be all set.

I think this should save a lot of the posts where folk have enabled VT in their bios but it is still not working.

sticky maybe?

I've concluded that having the desktop icons show a contextualized thumbnail of the file's content is more confusing than helpful. I have my icons set too small to be able to make out anything from most of the pictures, and the file extension is usually hidden.

Upgrade Never Completed ( 2 Hours Freezed On The Final Step)?

Mar 19, 2011

i was working on w7 ultimate x64 (i had xp 32 before, but due a hardware upgrade i wanted to try an x64 os) when an automatic upgrade from windows poped up(i was pretty sure i disabled the option before, but.. whatever). The thing is the upgrade never completed ( 2 hours freezed on the final step) and i had to reboot(i know, my mistake).from here, i tryed to boot but i did not sucess. the first issue apeared when i turned on the pc, and the boot recovery windows poped up, to check if there waserrors on the HDD. but wont never ever complete (6 or 7 hours running)i started to search on the web for a solution and i found a bunch of similar cases (a failed update and a failed boot recovery) but no clear solutions.never the less, the moest of the cases pointed at the same spot: "the bootmgr file" and i started to try a few steps posted on forums.first of all, i put the w7 dvd instalation and accesed to the console prompt.i followed these steps to delete and reinstall the bootmgr, or at least, that was what the post told me [CODE]well, i am about of exploding or jumping from a roof... seriously, i have some unfinished works to deliver in the begining of the week and i will not succes if ineed to blow up my D: and reinstall.

Since yesterday evening these buttons are useless, instead of bringing me to next or previous page they both cause browser to jump two pages. An example: I open Seven Forums home page, click News, click first thread in News. After reading it I press back button which should bring me back to News main page but instead browser jumps two pages back to SF home page. Same action when Forward / Next button is pressed, browser jumps two pages forward. All browsers, all sites. Logitech Setpoint drivers uninstalled and reinstalled, laptop rebooted. Issue remains

I have Unallocated space at the very end of my hard drive, even after the 25gb Recovery Partition, this is due to copying my old hard drive onto this new one via Clonezilla, and it automatically keeping the unallocated space at the end. Can I either move the unallocated space around the Recovery Partition, or delete the Recovery Partition altogether? Sorry if I am being a little unclear.

Disc ASUS Recovery Error 1029, Cannot Boot Into That Recovery Partition

Jun 23, 2012

I've gotten to the point where I need to just reinstall windows completely on my Asus G74SX (too many problems, I want to start fresh.). I encounter an error 1029 with Asus's recovery disks that I made when I had windows working: it says it is recovering all the way to 100% then doesnt work. I am in the process of trying it again so I'll see if it actually managed to wipe my hard drive like it said it was doing, and maybe if it did actually work and reinstall windows. However, I'd like to be able to get into the recovery partition because I would prefer restoring it with Asus as they recommend me to. However, when I hit F9, their target to get there, it doesn't do anything and just reloads the boot screen, with the Asus logo on it. I don't have an actual Wndows recovery CD so that's not an option, and at this point since my hard drive has likely been wiped by these recovery DVDs, I don't think going into Ubuntu and fixing the MBR will do me much good anymore. It may be worth noting that before I last restarted, I marked the Windows partition as active because of a tutorial here, making it so that recovery partition isn't active anymore.

XP Recovery Console Versus Vista/7's Recovery Console?

Nov 19, 2011

It seems to me that XP's recovery console is somewhat better than the one that comes with Vista or 7, unless someone can point me in the right direction for finding further documentation on this topic.

The main difference is the lack of ability to tinker with services (LISTSVC / ENABLE / DISABLE commands). A missed opportunity is the lack of registry tweaking, considering that REGEDIT can be run, but I think it only allows you to look at the registry for the recovery console rather than the main Windows installation, which doesn't help much (though I haven't tried to import/mount the registry file from the main Windows installation).

MBR/BCD Recovery In Windows 7?

Nov 13, 2012

I have looked at some of the other posts, but I didn't find answers to my specific questions. I have an older pc with Win 7. I bought new hd to have dual boot XP/Windows 7, and I made the mistake of installing XP without first unplugging Win 7 hd. Now, of course my Win 7 MBR was over written by XP during installation. I was thinking of using "EasyBCD" utility to recover Windows 7 MBR, instead of manually at the dos/cmd promt. My question is, after Windows 7 MBR is recovered, will I be able to boot from either XP hd as well as Windows 7 hd? Do I have to make any changes to the BIOS? The answer to this next question may be obvious, but just want to be sure. Do I disconnect XP hd during recovery, or leave it connected? Do I have to do anything to the XP hd MBR, or is that over written during the recovery process, (that is, assuming it is to be left connected)? Reinstalling Windows 7 is not an option at the moment, since I have a lot of software that would need to be reinstalled. Finally, would it make a difference if Windows 7 was 64bit OS, or is the process the same as recovering Windows 7 32bit MBR. Don't remember if Windows 7 is 32 or 64bit. Sorry about the barrage of questions. Just trying to cover all the bases.
