PC Keeps Rebooting At Last Step Of Install
Jun 27, 2009
Everything about the install appears to be going fine, but at the last step when it says completing installation, i have problems.
It says it's going to reboot and then does. When it's starting back up, is says setup is updating the registry. Then it says setup is starting services. It restarts again and when it gets to the same spot, out of nowhere the PC reboots and gets to the same point before endless rebooting.
I tried installing both 32 and 64 bit versions but the same problem with both of them. The 32 bit version I was able to get installed just fine on 2 old XP computers my friend had, so I know the disc itself is good.
I've tried just about everything I can think of but can't get past this issue. And every attempt is a big deal because I have to then restore my PC back to the original factory condition and it takes time. I don't have another PC of my own to troubleshoot with either. I've tried raising the RAM to 4GB but that had no effect. I'm sorta a beginner so any help is greatly appreciated.

I am trying to install Windows 7. I put in the DVD and the installation starts. It expands the windows files then says it needs to reboot. It reboots and goes through the whole process again, says it needs to reboot and it keeps going in circles. I did this three times with the same results. I tried rebooting from the hard drive with the DVD not in the drive and nothing happened.
What is going on?

I've got a problem with my recently bought (retail) Windows 7 home premium, which fails to install correctly (I've read the tutorial).
I had XP and want a clean install. I booted via the dvd using the 64-bit version, chose languages etc. (step 3 in the tutorial) and custom install (step 6). I deleted the two partitions I had, and used all 'unallocated space' to install the OS on. It all went smoothly: copying, expanding, installing features and updates.. no problem. Then, the system rebooted itself, as it told me it would. so again, no problems so far.
When it rebooted, I first chose not change the boot sequence and see what happened - this didn't work, as upon booting via the dvd I got back to the language selection menu (screen 3 in the forum's tutorial).
So, I rebooted the system and changed the boot sequence: hard disk first. Again a reboot, and then I got the screen 'Windows starting' with the 'coloured balls' forming the windows logo.
This is where it went wrong: the system reboots itself, and this is continuous process. Windows then gives you the option to go to safe mode or to repair the installation - when I chose safe mode, Windows actually 'progressed' booting until i got the message 'cannot finalise the installation in safe mode, please reboot' or words like that. So this didn't work, nor did the repair: windows 7 doesn't seem to think anything needs to be repaired and I have no idea what needs to be repaired.
Is this a driver issue? I have no hardware connected other than the Maxtor HD and the video card. The hardware seems to work properly during installation. I have tried both the 64-bit and the 32-bit discs, which give the same results. If it is a driver issue, how and when during the installation process am I to install these?
(I have at least located some of the mainboard/SATA drivers (MSI Global ? Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more), but not all are explicitly compatible with windows 7.)
Two notes: (1) I didn't run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor, being (stupidly) confident that it would run on my system. Moreover, I didn't have SP2 installed at that time (even more stupidly), so I couldn't run the program in the first place.
(2) I can't call Microsoft, since it's weekend and, more importantly, I don't have the product ID which you need to enter first before you get a number to contact them (at least, that's how it works in the Netherlands). Obviously, having bought the reatil version, I do have a legit product key but this (apparently) is not the same thing as a product ID.

I seem to be having an issue doing a fresh install of Windows 7 x64 Enterprise on a 40GB Intel 320 series SSD. The install will go as far as 'Completing Installation' before the screen goes blank, the computer restarts, makes another attempt to complete installation, with the screen eventually going blank again (monitor indicator turns amber, system non-engaged)I've done an extensive amount of Googling, and have followed the installation guide found here on the sevenforums - SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation (specifically, routine #4)[CODE]

i work for a local computer store, and i have always done our restore disks using ghost 2003, the dos .exe.. and it has worked fine..
Problem is now we have started pumping out Windows 7 machines and i cannot for the life of me get ghost to create a proper restore dvd, they always get a bootmgr error, i can run the repair off a Windows 7 dvd and that fixes it.. but thats not alot of help. (if you have ever delt with a end user you would know that everything has to be 1 touch and drool proof)
Anyway, anyone found any options for a good restore dvd setup? or a way around the bootmgr problem?
I have tried the old vista BCDEDIT and of course that doesn't work..
i have tried -FDSP, no go...
Any other ideas?

After you save your settings please follow this important step below in order for VT to work properly.
1. Enable VT in bios (where the option is, depends on your MoBo manufacturer)
2. Save BIOS Settings
3. Exit BIOS
4. Shut Down PC (some PC's will shut down automatically for about 3-4 seconds when you save the BIOS. Some will NOT)
5. Leave PC off for about 5-10 seconds
6. Boot PC
you should be all set.
I think this should save a lot of the posts where folk have enabled VT in their bios but it is still not working.
sticky maybe?

You can use Problem Steps Recorder to automatically capture the steps you take on a computer, including a text description of where you clicked and a picture of the screen during each click (called a screen shot). Once you capture these steps, you can save them to a file that can be used by a support professional or someone else helping you with a computer problem.

I've concluded that having the desktop icons show a contextualized thumbnail of the file's content is more confusing than helpful. I have my icons set too small to be able to make out anything from most of the pictures, and the file extension is usually hidden.

i was working on w7 ultimate x64 (i had xp 32 before, but due a hardware upgrade i wanted to try an x64 os) when an automatic upgrade from windows poped up(i was pretty sure i disabled the option before, but.. whatever). The thing is the upgrade never completed ( 2 hours freezed on the final step) and i had to reboot(i know, my mistake).from here, i tryed to boot but i did not sucess. the first issue apeared when i turned on the pc, and the boot recovery windows poped up, to check if there waserrors on the HDD. but wont never ever complete (6 or 7 hours running)i started to search on the web for a solution and i found a bunch of similar cases (a failed update and a failed boot recovery) but no clear solutions.never the less, the moest of the cases pointed at the same spot: "the bootmgr file" and i started to try a few steps posted on forums.first of all, i put the w7 dvd instalation and accesed to the console prompt.i followed these steps to delete and reinstall the bootmgr, or at least, that was what the post told me [CODE]well, i am about of exploding or jumping from a roof... seriously, i have some unfinished works to deliver in the begining of the week and i will not succes if ineed to blow up my D: and reinstall.

Logitech Performance Mouse MX, extra buttons for previous / next page. Since yesterday evening these buttons are useless, instead of bringing me to next or previous page they both cause browser to jump two pages. An example: I open Seven Forums home page, click News, click first thread in News. After reading it I press back button which should bring me back to News main page but instead browser jumps two pages back to SF home page. Same action when Forward / Next button is pressed, browser jumps two pages forward. All browsers, all sites. Logitech Setpoint drivers uninstalled and reinstalled, laptop rebooted. Issue remains

I installed Windows 7 RC1 (7100) 64 bit on my wifes' Dell inspiron 1525 laptop.
Every was fine and dandy until my wife hit the "media direct" button instead of the power button to start the Laptop.
Now it just keeps on rebooting over and over....
Is there a way to stop it from trying to load media direct, of fix-it so it loads it correctly then be able to shut it down ?

So I was on the internet when my computer close out of everything, and just shuts down. I my head I was saying, oh is it rebooting, android sdk unpacked fast(its a program that lets me play games and apps on windows). So as the computer restarted it went to a black screen with a blinking course And after 10-15seconds it restarts, just to starts the whole process over again. So I used my phone to get on the internet to check how to fix it, saying "oh man what is wrong, a virus maybe?" I seen some threads on different site with answers saying to to reboot in safemode using f8 and ... so and so. So I did it. nothing happened. So i held it, nothing. ( it just doesn't work) so now im stuck. With a rebooting computer. what to do now? I also heard a bout a error r something. It just reboots it there is a error, I don't know.

I have win 7 Ultimate, and every time I reboot win, lot of devices became unusable with "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)". I have to do troubleshoot of my notebook (in "Devices and Printers") and then almost all device with error 24 is uninstalled/installed and after that it is working fine. There are some devices
(e.g. Hamachi Network Interface, VMware Virtual Eth Adapter) which are not healed with notebook troubleshoot. Those devices can't be found in "Network Connections", but they are working fine.
Does anybody have a clue? (this is really irritating to reinstall all devices after every reboot)

It turns on, the IBM thing comes on, it's a blank screen with a __ at the top right that's blinking. Then it restarts, and the process starts all over again. I have forced shut down my laptop a lot of times, bit this the first time this ever happened.

my computer restarts without any pattern/reason that i could think off.
This has been going on generally for months.
This is a new computer that was bought in the end of September and it came with this problem when I bought it.
Was bought with windows xp, which was upgraded to vista and then to windows 7.
None of the operating system upgrades helped, but for a few months changing the graphics card did.
A few weeks back the restarts started again and just changing the graphic card this time didn't help. It went as bad as restarting once per minute. PER MINUTE.
The automatic restarts have been turned off.
This computer has been to the repairs more then my old one did in 5 years.
The next thing we will change is the motherboard.
Computer hasn't restarted in a hour so far, but each time I try to call someone on skype it ...lets me be on the call for a few minutes... and then restarts.
It restarts when I try to play world of warcraft, movies and what not. It sounds like the graphic card, but it's not. That's just today.
It started all over again a few weeks ago, then my dear repair guy reinstalled some drivers and it worked for a week. System restores don't work, but it doesn't make me stop trying.
I have ran every possible virus scan I can think of.
Reinstalled every program.
All kinds of system repairs.
I'm down to thinking it's either the power or system updates.
This is a rain of terror and It doesn't have a pattern.

I have a dell optiplex 360 that is running windows 7. I added a video card geforce 7950 gt, at the time when I added this the computer was running fine for months. Then I upgraded the power supply to a raidmax rx730ss because the video card needed the 6 pin power supply that the old psu didn't have. After I installed the new PSU the computer would start running the post (dell logo screen) finish the load bar, go to a black screen then reboot and start running post again. the computer does this indefinitely as far as I can tell.I installed the old power supply and it did the exact same thing.

I recently downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials and now I think I have some sort of virus. Within minutes of logging onto my computer, a message keeps popping up that there is a critical error and that the computer will restart within one minute. I have tried to do anything I possibly can to get rid of this issue! It does the same thing while booting up in safemode as well. I also tried to restore my computer to a previous date before this occurred, and it still keeps happening. I figured i'd try to restore it to factory settings also, but it does not give me the option while booting up (f11), or on my control panel. I also tried using the TDSSkiller but my computer reboots before the scanning/fixing finishes.

My Asus G73JH laptop [Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit] is about 2.5 years old and the other day it began suddenly freezing and rebooting. What I mean by that is the following: A) When it freezes, there is no warning, no gradual slow down, no anything. The mouse instantly refuses to respond, the computer makes no "thinking" internal noises, nothing. I'm forced to hard reboot. When it reboots itself, it is also instantly. There is no gradual closing of programs, it's just SHABANG. This became an issue suddenly. One day it was fine, the next it was doing this unpredictably. So I decided to go ahead and reformat the thing and re-installed everything via the Asus-provided "AI Recovery Burner" program.Annnd it's still having the same problems. Not only did I experience several errors when trying to do the million and one Windows updates, but it's still freezing and rebooting. Even in safe mode, it freezes. The timing of these things is unpredictable, it could happen 2 minutes after boot-up or, the computer could run fine for hours. So far, the freezing is much more common than the rebooting. Assuming the issue was hardware related, I ran Memtest86 last night for 7 iterations and it turned up zero errors.

I have been trying to clean install Windows 7 ultimate (DVD is fine, have installed on my friend's laptop successfully) since last week, but with no luck. Everything is fine during the installation; I can see the welcome screen, and then shut down. After my pc restart, passes the self-testing, it would reboot right before windows logo shows up. It turns into rebooting loop stopped every time before windows logo shows up. Also tried with Sapphire HD 3650 512MB (Dual DVI) graphic card, the results were the same.
