I've concluded that having the desktop icons show a contextualized thumbnail of the file's content is more confusing than helpful. I have my icons set too small to be able to make out anything from most of the pictures, and the file extension is usually hidden.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have recently upgraded my box from XP Pro to Windows7 Ultimate and the first thing that I noticed was the icon pictures when using the Thumbnail view.
With XP Pro, when the Thumbnail viewing mode was used a miniature picture of the actual picture represented by the icon was actually displayed on the icon. If the icon represented a folder containing multiple pictures, then the folder was divided into quarters displaying 4 micro picture taken from within that folder.
Now when it comes to the same usage in Windows 7, I find when in the Thumbnail viewing mode. ALL such icons are now depicted as a generic icon that shows a picture view of a spit of land protruding into a body of water and as such, finding a particular photo/picture is far more awkward than before.
My question: Is there a way that I can remedy this shortfall and set up Windows 7 Thumbnail viewing mode so that I can once again view a miniature of the within picture having it displayed on the actual Thumbnail icon?
I can't see my pictures, only a generic with the download number. How can I change this back to seeing the actual picture so I know what I'm choosing without having to preview each one?

But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two windows desktops and a mac mini all connected to a 16 port switch. All can ping each other just fine.Both Windows machines are running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit - One machine I use as my file and media server, with file sharing turned on in Network & Sharing Center; the other is simply a workstation, I have file sharing turned off on that machine. They are in the same homegroup, and I have no trouble reading & writing from workstation to server. Mac mini is running Snow Leo 10.6.6. All machines can access other network resources (printer, Internet).Using Mac, I can connect to the workstation (using Finder's Connect to Server), but I cannot connect to the server! This is backwards Macintosh!
I can access the user folder on the workstation from the Mac, and nothing else b/c file sharing is turned off on the workstation. But the Mac doesn't even connect to the server machine in Connect to Server. I get a Mac error saying check the IP address which leads me to think network related, but both computers can ping OK.I have Norton 360 on the workstation and Windows Firewall on the server. Is this why? I wouldn't think Windows FW would block the Mac but allow the Windows workstation? Like I said, homegroup and even direct connecting to the share works from the workstation.
I recently upgraded a Win-XP home system to Win-7 Home Premium. Everything went fine. But I have four system icons on the desktop, two of which I want to keep and two that I'd like to get rid of. The two keepers are the My Computer and Network icons, the two I don't wan to see are the Home Group and Library icons. This machine is the only Win-7 box on the network so Home Group is moot, and I do not expect to explicitly use Libraries any time soon. So the associated icons are just clutter on the desktop. For whatever reason, the two keepers include a "delete" option in their right click menus but the two I actually want to delete don't. So, how do I get them off the desktop? I don't think any of the four were present on the desktop when I completed the installation, and I don't remember what I did to get them to show up.

View 1 Replies View RelatedFinally I have found the place where my problem might get solved.Thing is: 1.There is a big "X" on 3 out of 4 disks I got(except "C" disk) as shown in the picture below: 2.Desktop icons are changed as well but not all of them.This is the second time this kind of crap happens to me. Last time it happened was after I clicked system backup. I couldn't stand the problem so I reinstalled my windows 7 pro 32bit and at first it was all ok. Every so often, when I'm typing text in a Comment box on a web site, when I pause to think and start typing again, the cursor jumps backwards through the text - often a few/several lines, within the earlier line of text, and I'm suddenly typing within a word. For example, I might start this sentence, and suddenly be typing 'For' within the word 'box' in the second line of text above. It's been going on since I've had this laptop and it's annoying, but I've never been able to figure out what was causing it. I've even tried banging random keys and the touchepad to try to replicate it, but it only happens when I don't want it to. I know there are keyboard controls that move the cursor to the beginning of the line, etc, but this is different - the cursor goes backwards in what seems like a random manner.

In the middle of a word the next letter suddenly skips backwards and inserts itself randomly in the middle of a previous word breaking up the sentence until you try to correct it. Then it's back to typing as usual before it happens again! Laptop is under warranty but all they said they can do is replace mother board.

View 7 Replies View RelatedOn a few occasions just recently my win 7 pro system has come out of "screen saver" with nothing but my desktop background displayed. If I then ctrl/alt/delete the screen goes black with just the cursor showing and otherwise unuseable. After a while the background will reappear but the only way that I can get the icons and everything back is to reboot.I have done a very thorough search for malware but none found. The problem never occurs whilst I am actually using the system and it does not always happen when it has been left to go into screen saver.
