Hidden Icons Not Working?
Feb 16, 2011I just did an up-date on my AOL (I know, I know). After the up-date, the hidden icon, for AOL, in the taskbar, is there but does not work. All the other icons work.

How To Make An Icon Appear In 'hidden Icons'
Mar 12, 2011I would like to have the Live Messenger and Skype icons into the 'Hidden icons' box (Windows 7), so I don't have them displayed all the time in the task bar.If I use the "Customize" -> "Select which icons and notifications appear on the taskbar" option, there are many programas which I can configure, but I can't find Live Messenger and Skype there to be added.

Jan 13, 2009At some point yesterday all my icons where invisible when looking at the desktop. But when browsing trough it with explorer I can find back to them, or show all stuff at my desktop. But not without doing it trough explorer.The right-click menu still works, and I can change desktop-wall and stuff. Also tried changing back to default theme, and removing My Computer and taking it back. But nothing seems to fix it :S Also tried several reboots, but still no icons show.Tried adding another user, and guess what, he got desktop icons! So there need to be something I have turned off etc.

Jan 27, 2012The little popup box in the tray that comes up when you hit the up arrow (to "Show hidden icons") is bugging me. It seems to have a timer built in that hides it a couple seconds after you click on one of the icons inside. This really bugs me. I would prefer that it either hide itself immediately after I click on one of the icons (but not if I right click one, obviously) or else lets me hide it by clicking directly on it somewhere. I know I can hide it by clicking on the arrow again, but some of my tray applications (namely my Portable Apps Launcher) minimize again if I click that arrow, leaving me with no other option than to wait for that annoying box to hide itself and get out of the way.

From Options - Display, I chose show hidden text and it was "Top of Form" at the top of the page. But I got curious about this and made some search and I realized that you can hide text in a txt file with a stream method and also there can be hidden streams in processes also.How can I find out if a doc(x) file has no streams in it. I mean the hidden text may be seen by the method of Options - Display; but can someone hide something with a password in a doc(x) file? If yes, how can I find this out?

Sep 11, 2011Some of my important system files are no longer hidden and I can't hide them even with the Command Prompt "attrib" command. Files such as bootmgr and ntldr are shown and I can't hide them. Also, show Protected System files is unchecked and show hidden files is also unchecked so they shouldn't be showing. I tried to re-add their system file attribute but I keep getting an "Access Denied" error in CMD and I do not have user account control on and I'm on a Default Administrator Account.

A friend appears to have had a similar problem see his comments to me below... I have not been asked for money but to the wording above win/2004/08 a "fix" has been suggested by what looks like a Microsoft copy site. I have downloaded the "fix" but am concerned if I use it I may have greater problems.
"I lost my laptop with the " Security Shield " virus caught from roaming the web. This places 'Windows look-alike' shields over the top of every 'Desktop' icon, and clicking on it anywhere directs you to a website asking for money to remove it. You cannot access anything UNLESS you are set up with additional 'Users', when you can boot into one of them O.K.
This virus continually changes its name, and that is why the anti-virus programs cannot find it, and neither can anyone else for that matter. I had to change my hard drive and laboriously re-install everything which has taken weeks - I did have some backup so that helped. I would like to be able to access the old hard drive but dare not - even connecting up to format it would be a risk."
Desktop Icons & Right Click Not Working?
Apr 30, 2012I did a clean install of Win 7 32bit last week and I am facing this issue once in a while. The desktop icons can't be used I can't click or select any icon, also right click of the mouse doesn't work. I can right click on the taskbar or in windows explorer but not on the desktop. Even show desktop icon doesn't work when the above happens. There is no specific time when this happens or it doesn't happen after running a particular program so I can't figure out what is the reason for this random fault.

Feb 17, 2011I think I may have screwed up royally with my still-new computer. Essentially, my problem is two-fold:
1) The shortcut icons on my desktop no longer work. I'm pretty sure I deleted the files from my computer (I'll explain in a little bit). Ex: I try to click on Mozilla, and nothing happens. If I attempt to send the same icon to the Recycle Bin, it will tell me that the file no longer exists. It says: "This is no longer located in "C: UsersKevinDesktop"
2) I am no longer able to access my Gmail. I no, I know that isn't a Windows 7 thing, but let me explain. When I go to Google in Internet Explorer and click on Gmail, I get a message that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I click on the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button, a box that says "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting" appears.
So those are essentially my issues. Essentially, everything was working fine before I started messing with my files. Here's the scoop: This is the first computer I've ever had that had a split hard drive (C and D). I noticed that the D drive never had anything saved to it, so I decided that I would move my files that began with the pathway "C: Users" over there. I literally just clicked and dragged that over to the D drive. Then...I noticed stuff was wrong. The issues I mentioned before (shortcuts and GMail) and also that what little music I had on my iTunes was unable to be located.
I realized that it was probably that the shortcut icons, the iTunes songs were looking for files that had been moved...I decided to move them back. So I clicked and dragged the folder in D back over to C. It told me that some of the files already existed in C, and it asked if I wanted to merge them. I said yes. So. Problem still persists. I have figured it out with my iTunes and have got the program to locate everything, but I am still unable to fix the other issues. I can't find those files for the desktop anywhere, and I can't even begin to figure out what to do with the GMail issue, but I feel it has to be linked, right???
Photo Viewer Screwing Up System - No Icons Working / Adobe Disappeared
Oct 13, 2012Something happened. Many of my icons do not work any more. I thing I have tracked it down to XPS Viewer. I get the following message:
"Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because either this photo viewer doesn't support this file format or you don't have the latest update to Photo Viewer."
The problem came out of nowhere but.. I was working with pictures and might have deleted something on the lower task bar. Adobe has disappeared too. Was going to try to update it but it is no longer on my desktop????

But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes.
