Hard Disk Hunts For 10 Minutes On Boot Up
Nov 3, 2011
Every time I boot up or wake up from Sleep mode my hard disk hunts for about 10 minutes probably updating files. This seriously slows down my system. I use the Microsoft virus checker, and the Microsoft Backup utility. Could it be one of these, or some other software, and if so how can I locate it and then stop it?

I've just bought Seagate Momentus XT 500GB and installed it myself to desktop. Downloaded DiskWizard from Seagate to clone my old hard disk into the new one.
Problem: How do I boot from the new hard disk? I still got my old hard disk on my computer, I'm trying to use it as extra storage, but it's still booting from the old C drive. How do I change it to boot from my new hard disk?

Compaq presario with Vista. Trying to do a clean install of windows 7 on comapq presario f500. Problem is the machine will only boot from hard drive. Cd drive works fine just can't boot from it. Windows 7 install disk won't boot. Windows xp install cd won't boot. In bios setup I've move the dvd/cdrom drive to top of boot list still no luck. So I got tricky booted from vista and starting windows 7 install cd from windows explorer. Install hung part way through and I had to turn off the computer. No I can't boot vista and have an incomplete install of windows 7 which won't boot. Not even safe mode. When you boot hit Esc the boot menus only shows notebook hard drive as an option. I've also tried unpluging the battery to clear out.

I reinstalled my hp notebook after getting message boot disk not found (3F0). I am running System Type x64 hp pavilion Dv7 with a AMD Phenom P840 Triple Core Processor. After restoring it from the recovery disk to.. from box condition and reloading all updates and drivers system still gives me the same message. The first time i reinstalled it to factory default and it didn't work. That is why the second time I did the from the box installation. I think I have created more than one operating system now and I don't know how to fix the problem. When it was originally loaded from Staples in January this year it wasn't really running great but I thought it was just my wireless connection was slow. Then it started to take a long time to do anything, on or offline. I went into the updates history from Microsoft and noticed that the first 14 updates they did failed. One of them was for display amd M880G with ati mobility. The computer began lagging worse and worse and starting to become unstable. That was when i decided to run the recovery disk not knowing that it was creating more hard disks. The message is back and now there is more than one hard disk and the last one i did was complete and all updates drivers were successful. I am still getting the boot devise not found message and sometimes it won't start at all.

Background:-
System Gigabyte X48T, 4G ram, usual bits. Video
Sata Port 0&1 - Gigaraid 2x 750G Raid 0 - Scsii disk Boot.
Sata ports 2&3, 4&5, 6, - 5x 500G 2TB dynamic GPT Raid 5
Sata Port 7 -1x 750G Roms & software disk.
Rocket Raid Scsii 0_1, 5x1TB in raid 5.
Scsii 0_0, 1x500G JBOD.
Problem is here.
I have been trying to get this system ready to do extensive HD video editing and multimedia work so thumbnails are critical to sorting out 1000's of clips. Vista just doesnt show thumbnails. I have been waiting years for Windows 7.
This system is fast. Boot drive reads at over 160MB/s sec. The 2 Raid 5 arrays can copy to each other at 250MB/s plus (for multi GB files). Interesting HDTach 3.0.1 only shows 160MB's for the Highpoint array.
They will have to fix their software..
In the last few weeks the system had become very flakey - Windows 7 x64 & vista x64 system -video thumbnail display & codec errors etc, windows explorer hangs, system corruption, bad software & codecs.
The boot manager from the latest (Paragon i think) partition manager for windows 7 got stuck on resize partition and it doesnt time out. I want my pc to be always on for remote access..
Anyway the system finally crashed. I lost one of the Raid0 boot disk array IDs when I tried to delete the boot manager. One disk offline and array gone. 60 hours, 400G of newly imported video from 8mm tapes..
So I decided on clean install just windows 7 after I recovered the data on the raid array.
To that end I removed all the other disks, took a single clean disk and installed vista on it.
Then I went to Bios and deleted the GigaRaid array and recreated it with the original 2 disks.
Changed the boot order in Bios to the first Sata.
Back into windows, initialise the GigaRaid array in windows disk management -Do not partition or format it. Load GetBackDataNTFS and
scan and copy all of the data back to the spare space on the new boot disk.
When I was totally happy I had everything back I loaded Windows Disk management and partitioned the GigaRaid into 250G and 1200G. Formatted the only the 1200G and copied on all of the drivers..
I then shutdown and removed the Vista hard disk and restarted with the Windows 7 DVD. Loaded the Gigaraid drivers and proceded to install Windows 7.
On first reboot, error 80xxxx .
Back to setup and disk management. Delete the new 250G partition and let Install do its stuff. So it creates a 100MB "system" as the first partition then 260G for the C drive and installs itself.
Whoo hoooo! it works.
I shutdown and add the GPT array and the single Roms drive.
Into Bios to set the boot to the Scsii Gigaraid & restart and the dynamic array and Roms disk is there.
Shutdown and install the RocketRaid Card with its 5 disks attached.
Back to bios to set Boot to Scsii Gigaraid.
It always puts Sata 0 first.
Or Scsii 0_1 (the RocketRaid).
Boot back into windows and everything is where it should be.
Clean and fast too. Install all of the software I need.
Now I have a nice system. Time to copy the video I recovered onto the Raid5 array.
So I plug the sata cable into the disk and go into the Highpoint management to scan the disk. Come up ok and is visible in windows.
I copy the data over to the raid.
The I decide to see it the computer will reboot back into windows unattended.. Nope! Screen fills with rubbish that looks like Linux. Says changing boot disk, then stops.
I go back into Bios and reset the boot disk back to Scsii 1_0 (GigaRaid)
Reboot and press F12 for the boot menu. Select the last item - GigaRaid.
Boots back into that Linux looking system (says debian).
I disconnect RocketRaid disk 6, Scsii 0_1 and back to bios and set to Scscii 1_0, Gigaraid, reboot back into windows..
Plug the Rocketraid Scsii 1_0 and reboot - back into Linux?
Question is..
1 What is the purpose of the 100MB that windows installed onto the boot disk.
2 how do i find the boot manager that screws the system when I connect a new drive (including USB key).
3 How do I force the boot to the correct disk array regardless of which drives are installed or not.
4. Is there a boot "something" I can install on every disk to point to Scsii Gigaraid

The drive had windows xp on it from another build so i just used it to test. It booted xp fine. It only showed 3gb of ram but i think that was due to it being 1066 and needing me to change bios ram settings. So i took my full version of windows 7 professional that i have used to install on my laptop too and tried to install. I formatted the drive completely and chose to install. It goes through the paces installs.
Then when it is supposed to boot from the hard disk the first time it give me a brief blue screen PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA so i research it and see it can be linked to hard disk or ram. So obviously its not the disk its been running xp fine and so has the ram. But just in case i switched out the ram with 1gb of old ddr2 800 i had from another build. Same error. I then tried my new ocz ram with a single chip thinking its a dual channel problem. Same error. So then i reburn the microsoft professional image to a new dvd r go through the process again and reformat and still the same error. I have tested all i know to test. Any other ideas?

I setup my pc with 2 harddisk. I dual boot xp 32-bit and windows 7 64-bit on 1 harddisk and other harddisk is for my data storage for xp and 7. The problem is that windows 7 recognize the 2 harddisk and I can access the data but xp won't. Xp can see the harddisk on 'my computer' but it was listed RAW.
Anyone know how to fix it so that xp and 7 can access the 2nd harddisk?

somehow my hard disk partition became dynamic. i formatted system and insttaled windows 7 ultimate in the dynamic disk partition. from then onwards system is not booting. only black screen with cursor on the upper left corner of the black screen.
if i am not wrong windows 7 cannot boot with dynamic disk. i will have to go to the disk management and after conversion of dynamic disk to basic disk with deleting all the volumes (data). it is possible to boot with windows 7.
but system is not booting...not opening..so i cannot go to disk management.
hrad disk is showing some partitions with system reserved. except system reserved all the partitions are shwoing dynamic. and in only one partition formatting option and installing OS option is coming while i booting system with OS DVD.
reinstalltion through OS DVD is possble by booting through OS DVD. but in advanced option repartition option is not coming. the one partition in which i installed OS previously, only in that formatting option is coming. in other partition neither formating option is coming nor extend.

New to the Tech forum boards but I am having a problem with my HP Pavillion dv6t. The hard drive went bad so I installed a new Seagate 1TB internal hard drive in the notebook. Starts up fine and then it says that "No bootable device found"---insert disk press any key. The disc is in the cd rom, I went into the BIOS enabled the CD/ROM boot option. I also went into the Boot option menu and tried selecting the internal cd/dvd rom drive option and I went into the actual boot order screen and adjusted the boot order so it read the cd-rom drive first then the hard drive. I also am using the HP Application and Driver recovery DVD. I am not sure if the disc is bad or cd drive is bad. The other thought is that because it is a brand new hard drive there is no information on it for the drivers so maybe the computer is not processing the information.

My comuter normally takes about 2 minutes to boot up. Unfortunately yesterday it just hanged after the first black screen with the windows symbol in the middle and after about 10-15 minutes there was a message that it could not boot and tried to do an automatic repair. The message later said it could not repair the problem automatically and would send an error message on line. It booted up fine into safe mode and I deleted my graphics card driver in case that was the problem. I used a third party programme to run a disk check and now it will eventually boot up into windows after hanging on the same screen for 10 to 15 minutes which is very frustrating - the graphics card driver was automatically loaded after it boot up into Windows with no option of a roll back. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 service pack 1 and also upgraded my ATI Raedon 4300/4500 series Graphics card driver to version to 8.821.0.0 dated 26-1-10.

I'm not sure if this is the ISO (doubt it) or my hardware (more likely).
I have motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H
BIOS version F2 (updated today 12/12/2009)
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 245
RAM: ddr2 800, 4GB (2x2GB)
Windows: 7 Ultimate 64bit
Video: GeForce 8800 GT 512MB, PCI-Expressx16 -- latest driver
from nvidia (downloaded today 12/12/2009)
Monitors: two (2) 19" Widescreen LCD. One is DVI, another is VGA+adapter=DVI.
Problem:
Win7 setup (install) -> first restart -> bios finished -> blank/black screen for 10 minutes (or so)... then win7 loads and resumes fine.
This 10-min delay happens every time win7 restarts. Note that this happens even initial setup/install, no other programs installed yet.
Previous OS: Windows XP Pro 32bit, SP2. No problem with booting.
I have tried unplugging one monitor, switching, using the onboard ... all with same result.
Can anyone help me, I'm desperate -- about to ditch win7 and go back to XP pro.

I recently installed a WD 15k Raptor hard drive and my computer now takes about 7 minutes to boot up, it gets stuck at the starting screen, where no hard drive action will happen, then 7-8 minutes later there will be loads of activity then will start up, ive tried narrowing it down, by removing the old hard drive (because im using the other old hard drive that had the OS on for media) and just running the new one, but no luck, I also tried reinstalling Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my old hard drive, which had no problems before, but the same effect, takes 7-8 minutes to boot. Ive even tried removing any new hardware I installed before it, but still the same problem, Ive asked a lot of people and Ive had various solutions, but no effect, I think its to do with the power supply, or the SATA cable and power addapter I purchased for the new hard drive. Ive also tried booting in safe mode, and it still takes the same time to boot.Computer spec:Processor: i7 870RAM: 8GBGPU: AMD Radeon HD6870HDD: WD 15k 300GB Raptor HDD, WD 5400 1TB HDDPSU: 500W
