Eating Up More Ram Than Vista
Dec 2, 2009
Ok i installed Windows 7 but i did a reformat of vista and removed the trash and bloatware that came with my computer. Before i did this my vista would run at 1.4 to 1.7 gigs of ram. I did what i said and upgraded to Windows 7 and noticed that i was running at 740mb or ram and i was very happy. But after being on for a couple of minutes my ram usage went from 740mb to 2.2 gigs.
I looked at what was eating it up and i have 2 svhost that are eating massive amounts. But not everytime i boot only about 80% of the time. I never had this with vista it was a constant 1.4 to 1.7 unless i was gaming.

I've noticed WmiPrvSE.exe eating up a ton of my cpu, i know i need to re-paste my cpu but it shouldn't be idling this hot or using 50%+ idling. It is in the system32 folder and it isn't a virus from what i can see. [code]

I am running Windows 7 64bit. From time to time (every few days), I get something eating all my available memory (going from 2 GB to 12 GB in a few minutes). I cannot pinpoint the process doing this. And then 20 minutes later the memory goes back to normal. I noticed that the second process eating the most memory (svchost.exe (secsvcs)) is gone right after that.

Today I had a power cut whilst using my PC, since then certain keys don't work. These are 1-6, r and a couple of others I can't remember (sorry). The 1-6 also doesn't work from the numpad.I have tried a different keyboard and the on-screen keyboard, both give the same result. But here's the interesting part, if I login as my admin user on the same machine, all keys work fine.So it appears to be an issue with my Limited user account. I've tried changing my keyboard region settings to US, but I had the same issue. I can't perform a system restore as I don't have it running and I can't restore from my backup as I've discovered it hasn't been backing up for the last few months
One solution would be to create a new limited user account, but in the past after a re-install it takes me a couple of weeks to get my user account configured exactly the way I like it. All those minor config changes you forget about in various applications. So I'm hoping their's an easier way.Does anyone know how I can reset the keyboard key bindings for my user account, or any other suggestions. I'm at a complete loss here, never come across this before.

I am running Windows 7, 64bit with 12 GB of RAM. My memory usage is usually around 2-3 GB. About once a day, Windows Defender eats all my memory. For a few minutes the computer is slow (even if running i7-980) then Defender releases the memory and everything is back to normal. I know it's Windows Defender because as soon as I see memory going high, if I stop the Windows Defender service, the memory goes right back to normal.
Is there anything I can do except disabling the service?

I access my Internet via a wireless USB Modem Stick. Living in South Africa, Internet usage is sky high. I would like to know how to monitor my Internet usage. I.ow, which precise programs are running stealthily and eating up my data. I can actually see from my Modem Interface how the data is consumed.I would also like to know How do I use Wireshark to capture wireless traffic? Do I require an add-on card to do this?

My system dual boots to either Windows 7 or Vista Ultimate, or, at least it is supposed to. Something happened and now the system just boots to Winodows 7 without giving me the choice to boot to either. When I use F6 I find that only Windows 7 is listed in the Operating Systems box.

New laptop has Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I have two business programs that won't run on a 64bit system. Partitioned the hard drive to install Vista Home Premium 32bit to create a dual boot system solely to run these two programs. Can't get Vista to load. Followed tutorial meticulously. All goes fine until the "Vista will boot for the first time" step. After this first boot, the screen returns to the "completing installation" page. However, the process dies here and the progress bar across the bottom of the screen never moves, even after an hour. Reformatted the partition and started over with same results. Multiple attempts always die after the first boot.

I have two drives (C and D) with Vista on one and Win 7 on the other (not sure if they're actual drives or partitions of a single drive, how do I tell?). I am dual booting and never use Vista. Starting to need the disk space and want to delete Vista. Is this difficult in this scenario?

I had recently installed windows 7 on my laptop running windows vista. I did not remove the existing windows vista installation, and thus win 7 was installed in a dual boot combination. Now, i want to remove vista from my laptop and use windows 7 only. The problem is that during installation, win 7 was installed on logical drive and windows vista was on the primary drive. Thus, i cannot delete/format the windows vista partition. Also I cannot transfer the boot drive to the partition containing win 7 because the vista partition is the active one.

I have a legitimate copy of Windows Vista with key codes etc and I have a legitimate upgrade disk for Windows 7. I had Windows 7 installed on a previous system build which had a HD crash and now I am starting again from scratch (wiyh backed up data).
Like a dolt, I installed Wondows 7 before I remembered it was an upgrade edition. I've looked all over the MS site and don't see a method I can use to Activate Windows 7 from this point. way to use my legitimate Windows disks and keys without having to wipe the drive, install Vista and then install Windows 7 yet again.
It's aggravating to have legitimate software and not be able to use it without needing to trick the system - surely there is a way to not have to start all over?

I'm new here and have a couple of questions about upgrading, I searched through some of the update threads and it still seems to be up in the air about whether or not you will be able to do a fresh install from the upgrade disc; I guess this remains to be seen.
One thing I want to do is max out my RAM and go from 32 Bit Vista Home Premium to 7 64-bit either Home Premium or Ultimate I'm still undecided as to which edition but as I'm maxing out my RAM I'll need 64-bit. I've ran the Beta, RC, and RTM 64 Bit on my main desktop and have no problems with it or any of my programs.
I realize going from 32 Bit to 64 Bit will require a full reinstall. If I purchase the upgrade disc will it work going from 32 to 64? I want a full reinstall straight from MS anyway as my restore images are loaded with crap from the Menu but don't want to bother buying an upgrade edition if it isn't going to work.

I'm currently running an OEM version of Windows Vista Home Premium, and I've placed my pre-order for Windows 7 Home Premium. Will I be able to do a clean install of 7 from my OEM version of Windows? I've heard that it somehow is dedicated to the motherboard, which could cause some issues...I don't know.
Will this work fine?

I currently have Vista Home premium 32 bit OEM that came with my Gateway, and I also have a second hard drive D:160GB available.
I have ordered the Win 7 home premium upgrade and would like to know if it would be possible to install it on the D drive using the 64 bit version. I am guessing that both 32 and 64 are on the same DVD and will give me the option?

I am trying to go from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Windows 7.
The 32 bit Vista was installed by mistake. My system can handle a 64 bit OS. Now I have finally found the time to upgrade. But the 64 bit intallation DVD can't be read from my OS.
I have tried setting up my CMOS so that I can boot from the DVD but I have run into some issues. First of all, when I look at my keyboard during the boot procedure, I noticed that the little light which indicates that one row of buttons are to be used for F1 - F12 keys, the little green led light goes on and off. Sometimes, during the boot process, it is on, sometimes it is off.
The CMOS procedure tells me I can hit F12 and set the boot order. I can hit F12 but when I go into that menu, I notice my keyboard is dead. The CPU does not accept any commands from me. So I need to power off and power on and try again.
The CMOS procedure tells me I can hit DEL and that launches the whole CMOS utility. There I can set the boot order so that the DVD is run first. But when I save and exit, I notice my keyboard is dead again. This time, the screen is showing things being set and loaded and I am prompted to hit any key to show I am sure that I want to boot from the DVD. I hit the Y key and I hit the spacebar, but it becomes clear that my input is ignored since my keyboard is being ignored. And the ol' Vista OS is loaded.
Is there any way to set things up in the VISTA OS to force a boot from the DVD? I guess I can load the OS in save mode and format the C drive, but if I do that I might risk having a dead computer since the CMOS does not seem to be trusting enough to boot from the DVD drive even if you tell it to.

I was to find that I couldn't do an in place upgrade from Vista Home Premium (64-bit) to 7 Professional (64-bit) after I'd already bought Professional. It seems that I can do an in place upgrade to either 7 HP or 7 Ultimate, but they skipped over Pro.
Is there some workaround for this, or failing that some way to reliably back up my applications and data?
I have already either upgraded the incompatible software, or uninstalled it, so I only have compatible software left on my Vista HP64 system.
