System Should Dual Boot To Windows 7 Or Vista Ultimate, But Does Not Recognize Vista

Aug 15, 2012

My system dual boots to either Windows 7 or Vista Ultimate, or, at least it is supposed to. Something happened and now the system just boots to Winodows 7 without giving me the choice to boot to either. When I use F6 I find that only Windows 7 is listed in the Operating Systems box.

Windows 7 & Vista Dual Boot Installation - Vista Won't Load?

Sep 13, 2010

New laptop has Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I have two business programs that won't run on a 64bit system. Partitioned the hard drive to install Vista Home Premium 32bit to create a dual boot system solely to run these two programs. Can't get Vista to load. Followed tutorial meticulously. All goes fine until the "Vista will boot for the first time" step. After this first boot, the screen returns to the "completing installation" page. However, the process dies here and the progress bar across the bottom of the screen never moves, even after an hour. Reformatted the partition and started over with same results. Multiple attempts always die after the first boot.

Remove Vista From Vista / Windows 7 Dual Boot?

Sep 13, 2012

I have two drives (C and D) with Vista on one and Win 7 on the other (not sure if they're actual drives or partitions of a single drive, how do I tell?). I am dual booting and never use Vista. Starting to need the disk space and want to delete Vista. Is this difficult in this scenario?

Removing Vista From Dual Boot Of Windows 7 And Vista?

Apr 5, 2011

I had recently installed windows 7 on my laptop running windows vista. I did not remove the existing windows vista installation, and thus win 7 was installed in a dual boot combination. Now, i want to remove vista from my laptop and use windows 7 only. The problem is that during installation, win 7 was installed on logical drive and windows vista was on the primary drive. Thus, i cannot delete/format the windows vista partition. Also I cannot transfer the boot drive to the partition containing win 7 because the vista partition is the active one.

Upgrading Vista To Windows 7 Without Installing Vista First?

Mar 23, 2012

I have a legitimate copy of Windows Vista with key codes etc and I have a legitimate upgrade disk for Windows 7. I had Windows 7 installed on a previous system build which had a HD crash and now I am starting again from scratch (wiyh backed up data).

Like a dolt, I installed Wondows 7 before I remembered it was an upgrade edition. I've looked all over the MS site and don't see a method I can use to Activate Windows 7 from this point. way to use my legitimate Windows disks and keys without having to wipe the drive, install Vista and then install Windows 7 yet again.

It's aggravating to have legitimate software and not be able to use it without needing to trick the system - surely there is a way to not have to start all over?

Go From 32 Bit Vista To 64 Bit Windows 7?

May 6, 2012

I am trying to go from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Windows 7.

The 32 bit Vista was installed by mistake. My system can handle a 64 bit OS. Now I have finally found the time to upgrade. But the 64 bit intallation DVD can't be read from my OS.

I have tried setting up my CMOS so that I can boot from the DVD but I have run into some issues. First of all, when I look at my keyboard during the boot procedure, I noticed that the little light which indicates that one row of buttons are to be used for F1 - F12 keys, the little green led light goes on and off. Sometimes, during the boot process, it is on, sometimes it is off.

The CMOS procedure tells me I can hit F12 and set the boot order. I can hit F12 but when I go into that menu, I notice my keyboard is dead. The CPU does not accept any commands from me. So I need to power off and power on and try again.

The CMOS procedure tells me I can hit DEL and that launches the whole CMOS utility. There I can set the boot order so that the DVD is run first. But when I save and exit, I notice my keyboard is dead again. This time, the screen is showing things being set and loaded and I am prompted to hit any key to show I am sure that I want to boot from the DVD. I hit the Y key and I hit the spacebar, but it becomes clear that my input is ignored since my keyboard is being ignored. And the ol' Vista OS is loaded.

Is there any way to set things up in the VISTA OS to force a boot from the DVD? I guess I can load the OS in save mode and format the C drive, but if I do that I might risk having a dead computer since the CMOS does not seem to be trusting enough to boot from the DVD drive even if you tell it to.

Vista X64 To Windows 7 X64?

Feb 2, 2012

I am trying to do an upgrade from Vista Home 64 bit to Win7 Ultimate 64 bit, but every time I do, I get an error that says the versions are incompatible. I forget the exact wording, but it literally says cannot upgrade 64 bit version to this 64 bit version, depsite the fact Win7 Ultimate is reported to be compatible with everything. I even tried to do the x86 install after x64 failed out a few times (I know, I didnt actually expect it to work). I honestly think that this version of Vista was so chewed up that it's failing due to corruption in Vista, when I got this machine to work on it was crawling with viruses (Vundo, doesnt open .exe's, all the fun stuff). Usually I just do a clean install, but the lady who gave me this machine begged me to try and save her programs. I can honestly say I've never seen this incompatibility error before though

Upgrade Vista 32-bit To Windows 7 64-bit?

Jul 2, 2009

I must confess from the get-go that my knowledge of the finer points of computers in general is limited, but I've heard that 64-bit is the way to go. I bought my system from Dell about 12 months ago. Since I didn't build it, I can't tell you what mother board I've got (Dell refuses to easily divulge that bit of info and it's kind of a huge problem), but I do know:

Intel Q6600 @ 2.4 GhZ
4 GB DDR2 800
Radeon HD 3870 512 MB
W/ Vista Ultimate 32-bit

can I buy an upgrade kit to go from Vista 32 to Windows 7 64 or will I need to straight buy Windows 7 64 bit and install it? Will I need to update the BIOS? Is casual gaming, photo and video editing and HD video viewing even worth 64-bit? Again, since I don't know what mobo I have, all this may be for nothing because the board may not do 64-bit at all...

Vista Took Over Windows 7 Permissions

Jul 18, 2011

I get pretty tired of Vista and all this permissions stuff. I was testing out a file in different OS versions. I was working with it in Windows 7 Pro. For easy of use I moved the file over to the Windows 7's C Drive.Booted into Vista. I needed to make a quick change to the file. I go to Save the changes and I get another one of Vista's messages (that I probably never read) about you don't have permissions to save. I was like sure I do I'm Admin on my Computer (who cares what OS I'm in). The computer didn't answer me, which is probably good, because it would be laughing now. So I'm in Vista and I right click on the Windows 7 drive and I give myself permissions to acess the Drive. I'm not sure if that moved to all the sub folders or not.I get into Windows 7 and now Windows 7 Doesn't have access to the its own C Drive. I try to give it permissions like 3 or 4 times and it shows it should have permission but nothing happens. (I get an error message when trying to created a file in the C drive in Windows 7)I better go back into Vista and take off any permissions for that drive. Guess what? I do that. In vista I take any owner or permission off for the Windows 7 Drive. Now I'm back into Windows 7 and I can't even access the C Drive? I can't even access the permissions for the drive? How do I go about restoring Windows 7 permissions?

Upgrade To Windows 7 From Vista

Dec 24, 2012

I am wanting to upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista and do a clean install in the process. I plan to do this using a retail Windows 7 upgrade disk.

The machine is an older Acer Aspire running the 32 bit Vista OS.

My plan is to buy a new HD because I think the existing HD may be flaking out. Of course, the machine has gone through several iterations of software installs and unistalls in its 7 year life span. So, some of the problems being experienced could be related to those circumstances. That's why I want to do a clean OS install and reinstall of programs. Is this plan reasonable? What are the problems I might encounter?

Neither myself or the client is interested in doing something outside a lawful upgrade. Would a retail Win 7 Professional OS be better/easier to get the system running on Win 7 pro? EJ TLARbb has chosen the best answer to his/her question.Click here to view the answer that was selected.

Upgrade From Vista To Windows 7?

I have a Dell E520 that came with Vista. After a year or two, I had had enough with Vista and bought the Windows7 upgrade. However the upgrade didn't go well and I got on the phone with Microsoft. They walked me through doing a clean install using the upgrade version that I bought. Windows 7 has been and still is working fine. My question has to do with my "Recovery D" drive. I'm assuming that what is on there is a Vista recovery, unless the upgrade changed that drive too(?). Since I never want to go back to Vista, is it OK to use that drive space? How can I make it a recovery drive for Windows 7?

Windows 7 Vista Keeps Shutting Down?

He later said it was due to malware and viruses which he reportedly took off, but it still kept shutting down at the same point. I tried the 4 hp recovery disks I was sent to reset it to factory settings hoping that it would take care of any viruses, but it still won't work and shuts down here.

Windows 7 Upgrade From Vista?

Feb 3, 2012

A couple of you know that I was given two laptops to clean off the Win 7 Security 2012. The one is not as bad as the other. Cleaned the HP. The Compaq was her husband's and after he gave it to me to fix, he called and gave me the laptop. I cleaned a virus off it last year, similar to the new one, so I do know how to reinstall Win 7. BUT for some unexplained reason, and probably to my advancing age, lol, I don't remember it going the way this has gone. Anyhow, now I have THREE instances of Win 7 on one partition, I think. At least when I booted up after putting in the product code, it asked me which of three I wanted to start. Is there a way to get rid of all instances of Win 7, leaving just Vista, so I can start over?
