Disable Playback Device Makes It Disappear - Now No Sound
Oct 23, 2011
After opening the Sound pane (from right click on the tool bar speaker icon) I clicked on the Set Default button near the bottom. There I clicked Disable (I think that was the term) for the onboard sound card (Conexant). Now the sound card is gone and I can't find how to turn it back on. I'm not very sophisticated but I have checked the usual suspects even downloaded the driver etc.

With my recent purchase of my new Windows 7 computer I added a fluorescent light above my workstation. Its around 21" long and mounted about 3 feet above my monitor and PC. Sometimes when I first turn on the light I hear the "bong-bong" sound of the device disconnect sound from the PC. This does not happen every time but I would say about 60% of the time it happens. I do not see any indication than something actually "unmounted" but this does have me stumped. I know a fluorescent light does put out a frequency but I have not heard of anything like this. I have stopped using the light for not until I can figure out if it is actually interfering with anything.
I have system with multiple Sound playback devices. Most of the time it needs to be on the first entry in the list of devices (HDMI output with me).I'm looking for a way that when I have manually set it to another device in the list, and then shut down the pc that at the next boot it automatically reverts back to the first in the list without manual intervention.
I know this doesn't really give much away to my problem but i'm just as confused.
My laptop has recently started making the little beep noise that would occur when inserting a usb device etc. but i haven't inserted anything into the laptop at all?
I have checked various windows device programs but to no avail, there are no yellow triangles in the device manager, so i'm unsure as to what has caused this?
I have also system restored but it still proceeds to make the noise.
The title explains the problem. I can't find anything that would set this off. Everything else seems normal. It's been doing this all morning. Probably, if I reboot, it'll stop - but I want to find the source of the 'bing.' How can I trace it down?
i formatted yesterday my pc, today i installed the drivers then i activated windows and it needed to close the pc to be saved.but when i booted my pc it keeps rebooting and makes a strange sound.hardware: mobo b75m-d3h gigabyte,i3 3220 win 7 32 bit home premium
About half hour/hour into my online game of L4D on VS mode my game freezes up and makes a constant buzzing sound? And I have to manually hold the power button on the comp to reboot and during boot it asks to start windows normally or last known good config.
Anyone have any trouble like this? running 64bit Windows 7 build 7600 with 8800GT 512. I'm thinking its a driver issue? I forgot how to check which Nvidia driver I have..
I noticed couple of times that i don't see one of my drives in the Computer window. It also not showing up in the Disk Management window. I didn't know the cause till now. I tried reseating the cables and some other suggestions online with no luck.
Today i noticed the cause: If i am connecting a USB memory or external HDD to the front USB panel it disappears. Disconnecting it (the USB component) won't show the drive back in the list.
I have: 120GB SSD as my C drive. 1TB HDD as D drive. 2TB HDD as E drive. All are SATA.
I've had the freezing problem for months and so far no solution. My laptop runs fine when I play games, or browse, as long as i don't watch videos or listen to music, it doesn't mind if online or from my drive. Tried different software but no luck. I would think it's hardware, but i don't have this problem on linux.I ran windows 8 for a few days, didn't see the freezing there, but I don't like the OS.I think the problem is with the audio drivers or something, I tried old and new ones, but no result.I am running Windows 7 ultimate 32bit (64 doesn't help either). My laptop is Acer Extensa 5635zg. I attach the Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2 report+ the everest report inside the zip, where you can find the hardware information about my laptop.
I'm using an Alienware M17x R4 with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 660m.
I've been using this laptop for about 3 months now and everything has been running fine. Yesterday, I was playing Skyrim testing out a new mod from nexusmods. I've read on the description and comments and there were no problems associated with the mod. While I was using it a received a BSOD. When I restarted the computer my resolution was reset. I right clicked on the desktop and the options for my Nvidia control panel were gone along with the other options for the Intel Graphics control panel.
After a while my first display adapter came back which was the Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000. I looked up as much as I could about the problem and it was usually associated with the display adapters being reverted to something like Standard VGA Adapter. This applied to the Intel graphics, but that was all. It was as if my graphics card vanished and I can't find it under device manager. When I try installing/reinstalling the Nvidia drivers it says that there is no Nvidia hardware. I've tried waiting a couple of hours with the laptop shut down, finding it in safemode, and searched for even more solutions. I can't seemed to find any. The last thing I did was check the BIOS and it said that the Discrete Graphics Card was not detected.
there is a better way to change my audio playback device in Windows 7 (Ultimate, Service Pack 1, 64 bit). As background, I keep my headset plugged in at all times and swap to it when needed, but like to use my speakers most of the time.
The only way I've found to swap between headphones and speakers is to right click the volume button on my taskbar, open "Playback devices", select my headset (listed as "Speakers, Realtek High Definition Audio"), then click "Set Default".
Aside from feeling rather tedious, the swap is not recognized in nearly all programs if they're already active. In other words, if I boot up a program with my speakers set to default, swapping to headphones via the above process will not change the audio output device for that program until I quit it completely, set the new default, the restart the program.
I'm trying to use my computer as a wake-up alarm. I typically have my USB headset as my default audio device, but I also have speakers plugged in and turned on. When my computer boots up in the morning, I would like to have a script that changes the default audio device to the speakers for a certain amount of time, then changes the audio device back.
When I was watching movies on my computer through my HDMI, I accidentally disabled the device so now the sound only comes out of my computer. How can I restore this function?
i'm wondering if there is a way to automatically change the audio playback device depending what monitor the application making noise is on. for example when i watch a Internet video on either of my 19 inch desktop lcd monitors i want to sound to play through my pc speakers. if i play something on my lcd tv through hdmi i want the sound to play through the hdmi to the tv. ive done alot of searching and i cant find anything anyone have any suggestions?
With my current setup I have 2 playback devices that I constantly use on my computer. Currently to switch between devices I have to go to control panel, sound, and then change the playback device. I am hoping to find a way to make 2 shortcuts on my desktop to change my playback devices. One shortcut for each of my devices, where I can open the shortcut and the default device will be changed. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate.
My comp is having some audio problems. Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit. It says i have no audio playback device installed? One or more audio service isn't running? Both the windows audio and the windows audio end point builder services must be running for audio to work correctly. At least one of these services isn't running? It says I dont have a playback device installed?
No devices displayed when I open playback devices.? How do I get a device or install a driver to fix the problem. In services both windows audio and windows audio endpoint aren't started. When I turn on windows audio i get error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start. When I turn on windows audio endpoint builder I get error 1084: this service cannot be started in safe mode sound doesn't work no audio at all. I don't have a restore point. I can only boot up in safe mode with networking.
I have a thinkpad x100e netbook and a Conexant CX20582 SmartAudio HD sound card.i just reinstalled windows 7 and it seems the microphone has not worked since i did that. I have adjusted, updated, disabled and enabled the drivers, but i still do not get any sound when playing back recordings or skype test calls i make. the system lets me make the recording, and skype seems to detect the microphone, but nothing plays back.the speakers work without problem.when i try to set up the microphone, the prompt does not identify it. i have tried to connect a microphone as well, but either way, i would like to mostly rely on the built-in mic anyway.also, the microphone does not show up on the volume mixer.
I have an Aspire 5738Z laptop running Windows 7 Home Premimum. I am trying to set up a HDMI cable connection to my Toshiba Smart TV. The picture is fine but there's no sound. When I go into Sound in the Control Panel, there is no HDMI option to choose in order to send the output to the TV speakers (only "Speakers" and "S/Digital Audio S/PDIF) . I've tried downloading various Graphics Media Accelerator Drivers from the ACER, INTEL and REALTEK sites but they all say that they are not validated for my computer.
Windows 7 64bit Prof (on a suped up PC) Asus BT211 - BT 2.1 + EDR (full A2DP support with latest Windows 7 64bit drivers - Broadcom Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR driver version 6.3.5.430 (4/8/10) Sony DR-BT101 Headphones - (Microsoft says they're compatible)
PROBLEM:All BT devices successfully installed and appear to be working. I can even find the A2DP device if I show all hidden devices in Device Manager. The headset pairs with no problems, Remote, Headset, Handsfree Telephony, and Audio Sink Services are available under device properties. However, non of the headphone services are available under "Playback Devices" or "Recording Devices".When I right-click on the Bluetooth system tray icon and select "Open Settings" then click on the "Audio" tab I can see all of the active services from my headset. All services show "disconnected" below them. When I right-click on a service (with the headphones on and in connectible mode - steady flashing blue) I can select "Connect" (the only place in Windows 7 I've found the connect function). When I try to connect, it shows "Connecting" for a minute or two then goes back to "Disconnected". The headset never appears to respond.SO... basically it appears everything should be working, but for some reason it isn't. I can PAIR but I can't CONNECT. I can install services but I can't actually use any of them.
I've tried everything, there must be something I'm missing. Others have said they got these headphones working with Windows 7, many have also had problems not just with these headphones, but a whole range of BT devices and connecting to Windows 7.I also have a Logitech BT MX5000 keyboard and mouse combo and they work fine.... well, when they're not lagging out or dropping out, they work fine.
I have recently begun using Windows 7. Previously I was using Vista Home Premium.
I have a Belkin Bluetooth adapter F8T016 and used to stream music to a bluetooth speaker.
Since installing Windows 7 I cannot stream the music. Initially my Broadcom driver would not connect to the speaker. I therefore installed the Anycom Bluetooth USB2 Vista driver as suggested in this thread:
Belkin F8T016 Mini-USB Bluetooth Dongle
Now my laptop and speaker connect properly (I can see it is connected in the bluetooth property settings and physically through the 'connected' LED on the speaker.
My problem now is that the device will not playback sound. When I try to perform the 'test' in the audio device properties I get the message "Error: Cannot perform test sound".
- graphic drivers (not in my case, U can always check if it helps in yours)
- high performance power profile (from this forum's tutorials: Power Plan - Select | Power Plan Settings - Change)
- installing different codecs/vid player
- PCI-E x1 bug <- a real pain in the ass, caused most of the problems; I’ll explain how to solve it in a minute
- Comodo Firewall/Internet Security for x64 systems (for some users disabling the Image Execution and unticking Detect Shellcode injections worked) - still a not resolved bug LINK 1 LINK2 - interrupt conflict with other hardware (try to disable in BIOS setup your WiFi adapter / COM port – this helped a couple of people)
Skipping and shuttering sound on all my sources (Audigy (with kx v.3550 drivers) and AD SoundMax integrated with MB) was also caused by the PCI-E bug, which was a real surprise for me, especially in the case of Audigy which is an old PCI card.
My acer laptop sound playback option shows only speaker option. how can i get headphone option. Wehn i play music sound comes from speaker evn if headphone attached..

When I use vlc media player to play mp3 files on slow speed the sound cuts out . It is a toshiba netbook and windows 7 starter operating system. What can be the problem.I really need the slow play to listen to language course
I have an emu 1820m soundcard installed in my computer. It seems to be functioning perfectly. I can play dvd'd, cd's, iTunes, etc and the sound plays through my speakers without a problem. I want to record some sounds from a dvd but i cant get anything to record. Recording device is set to Wave EMU DSP as the default device. Im using Audacity to record and have set the recording preference device to be Wave (E-MU _-DSP). When I hit record I get an error 'Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project template'And I cant record anything. In the built in Windows sound recorder, when I hit record, I get this error 'An audio recording device cannot be found' Everything seems to be functioning perfectly, yet i just cant record anything.
I'm in a pickle with my machine and Windows 7 after this latest update. On startup I get an error from MMDevApi.dll saying that it might not run on Windows or... something else. This also occurs anytime a program tries to use the sound card ie. WoW, Yahoo IM, Live IM, SL, etc. I've updated my sound card drivers to the newest ones. I still get an error that says the device is detected when going to "Sound Devices" in the control panel.
Trying to adjust the sounds themselves leads me to the Windows Audio thing... which won't start even from the component list.
normally i only have 1 sound card/sound device in sound settings when i use hdmi with my tv, i have 2 sound devices in there, and i can choose 1 one of them as default, and all applications i run will play sound on that default device, so i choose hdmi (my tv) as default, open chrome for my mom watch movies, sound play on my tv (hdmi), that's what i want and i open firefox, go to Internet, sound also play on my tv (hdmi), that's not what i want, i want it (firefox) to play sound on my pc, so my mom can watch movies on tv, and i can watch Internet on pc
is there a way to do this? a way to set per-application sound card/sound device setting? i know some programs like windows media player or vlc can let you choose sound card, but firefox, chrome do not. i tried indievolume and it did not work, even uninstalled, reinstalled but did not work, or is there any browser that let me choose sound card setting (like wmp and vlc, but these 2 are not browser)
and does anyone know if mac or windows 8 has this feature as built-in? if windows 8 does then i might upgrade
I'm making a test equipment to test a USB device that uses a FTDI-chip (232R). This FTDI-chip has a S/N a Vendor ID (VID) and a Product ID (PID) along with many other settings.
My problem is: 1. I get a new USB device (not flashed in anyway) from the manufacturer, insert it into a USB port on the computer and windows install the standard device drivers included with this device (these are the same for every device) and no windows reboot message is visible.
2. Now I set the S/N, VID, PID to something I like, then I have to remove the USB device to set the settings. When I insert the device again Windows install the device drivers once again, but this time it prompts me with the message "Restart Now or Restart Later". I press "Restart Later" and the device works fine anyway... BUT Can I somehow get rid of this message?
