I successfully installed Windows 7 RC 7100 as a second OS in addition to XP Pro. I never had Vista, so this system is totally new to me. My questions:
- I have a problem with a correct codepage for non-unicode characters in russian language. In XP there was a special setting that allowed to select the proper language to show non-unicode characters under Regional settings. Will russian LIP or MUI solve this ? BTW, whats the difference between them? If I prefer to have english menus, what do I need to get?
- I installed Windows 7 to the separate drive. During installation I had some known problems with my bad memory sticks and had a BSOD. I changed them and Windows 7 was installed successfully. Now I have to change boot sequence in BIOS to switch between XP and Windows 7. Is it a way to edit boot.ini on XP to include Windows 7?
Windows 7 (and XP), does its Kernel run with Unicode or ASCII code? What are really the main differences between ASCII and Unicode apart from Unicode having more characters?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an asian, non-unicode program on my computer and whenever I run it, all the asian characters display as little boxes I checked the internet and I got suggestions to change my system local to the language I was trying to display. After I did so, the program displayed the characters completely, but some of my other programs on my computer displays ONLY in that language (Since it reads the settings from system local)Is there a way I can display the language with an English system local?
View 5 Replies View RelatedHow do I type in unicode characters such as "☑"?In XP you could add a "hexnumpad" key to the registry and then type "Alt +2611", but this doesn't seem to be working. I can still type regular ASCII Characters using the numpad, however.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently reformatted my PC and have noticed that areas which properly supported Unicode beforehand no longer do. For example, although Unicode text shows correctly in the majority of Windows Explorer, when I right click on files to view the properties the text field that shows the file name isn't rendering it correctly. This also propagates into some parts of other applications which previously had Unicode support, such as Winamp. I have a vast collection of East Asian music so this is more than a minor inconvenience for me.
Please find the below screen shots to demonstrate what I am seeing: For comparison, here is the same file being displayed properly on my Laptop:
I had to change system locale for non-unicode programs from Slovak to Russian, because of some problems with legacy software. Later, I have switched back to Slovak. I have rebooted and everything seemed to be fine, but ... I've noticed, that slovak/czech programs do not work properly and still using Russian codepage even if windows is showing that current locale for non-unicode program is set to Slovak.Re-setting of this option did not work, so I've downloaded some diagnostic tools and it shows: [code] So my question is: how can I change EBCDIC code page in windows 7 (for example in registry)? Or how can I reset all these settings to windows default?
View 7 Replies View RelatedFor some reason Windows 7 (Home Premium, 64-bit) has recently stopped displaying Unicode characters correctly. I know its a Windows issue, not specific to a certain program, because the problem appears on Asian characters and symbols like the stars in my song ratings across various programs like foobar2000, Mp3Tag, and iTunes. I don't think they work anywhere; I just happen to notice their absences (replaced by ugly square placeholders) in my media-related programs. One interesting thing is that restoring my default font settings via Control Panel appears to fix the problem every other time I restart (ie, I might be able to get Unicode working correctly if I always restore the default font settings before restarting or rebooting my PC - but that is heinously annoying).
The only possible cause I can think of is that I have had some programs to modify the Windows UI such as GDI++ to make the fonts Mac-like (decided ClearType was better rather quickly :P) and pieces of Stardock's suite including programs like WindowsBlinds, IconPackager, etc. I somewhat recently uninstalled all of them, but I didn't notice the problem right away, so I am not sure if they have anything to do with it.
My grandson is using my HP laptop, with Windows 7 64 bit. I am trying to set up Parental Controls and have set up a standard user account for him. However, there is no pane for the User Controls when I click on his account in Control Panel>User Accounts and Family Safety>Parental Controls, it tries to set up Windows Family Safety instead (and fails). I presume I need to set up parental controls first, so does anyone know how I can make it access the User Controls? I can't find any help, especially not on Microsoft sites which merely presume that you can access the controls.
View 8 Replies View Relatedi thought upgrading to 7 would take care of it, but it carried over to the new operating system. here's the 2 problems i have, and i believe they are tied together or i wouldnt mention the browser one. volume control. at completely random times, the volume controller will just take over and turn itself all the way down or all the way up. any attempt by me to move it it just resets, if i slide the bar to the top it'll slide it back to the bottom, and vice versa. more often than not it turns the sound down. but once in a while it maxes my volume. the only way i can regain control of the sound is to reboot. i only mention this cuz it happens simultaneously with the sound problem so im pretty sure they're related. my browser will act normally until the problem kicks in, then it acts as if someone is hitting the "back button" and holding it down. i cant go forward a page, i cant open a web page, i cant do anything, it stays on my homepage forever. you can see it try to go to a new page but then poof its back on the home page. this makes browsing or using the internet impossible.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was fiddling around with parental controls on my own computer seeing as how I thought it would be a good way to limit myself after school forcing me to do my homework/read/study.I made a new standard user account to see how it would work. Shortly after, I made the standard account an administrative account and put parental controls time limit options on my old original administrative account. I changed my mind shortly after this, and as I remember I deleted the standard account, and turned off parental controls on my original account. The next day, I come back home and I can't login because of parental controls. This is the only user account on the computer, and it is a full administrative account. How do I turn this off without having the ability to even get on window's itself? I'm on Windows 7, using Windows's Parental Controls.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with my Windows Services. Each time when I launch Windows Services window, I get a warning:One or more activex controls could not be displayed because either:
1. your current security settings prohibit running activex controls on this page, or
2. you have blocked a publisher of one of the controls.as a result, the page may not display correctly.
The warning pop-up opens only when I click on Extended tab.The problem has nothing to do with IE security, because I can open pages with ActiveX controls on them and so.I have installed Spybot spyware/malware removal tool. Then uninstalled it.I'm not sure if this is the cause of the problem. But I presume it is.
I have parental controls set up to lock my son's user account after a certain time of day. the trouble is, when he's on the computer, then leaves, and I come in later, his profile is locked but not logged out. I can't get in to his profile to log him out, of course, unless I disable the parental controls first. How can I force another user to log out from my profile?

I have been hiding the sound control on the taskbar, but they still adjust it.I would like to be able to lock the sound control so they do not have access to it in any way.I am OK if it basically locks it down, I just want to make sure the kids have full access to the internet as needed, the programs they require and the ability to save as needed.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIn this tutorial, it's time to take a look at the often unfairly criticized User Account Control security mechanism. User Account Controls (UAC) were introduced in Windows Vista and were immediately unpopular with users migrating from Windows XP. However, they drastically improved security and when used in conjunction with limited user accounts, can actually save a great deal of time, as we'll demonstrate in the video.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is a very useful graphic viewing program, no longer in production, but which works fine under Windows 7. The problem is that setting it up requires the program to write some things to the registry, which apparently is being blocked, so I have to go through the settings every time I load it. In Vista I could make the settings permanent by switching User controls off while I set the program up. With Windows 7 I find that even with it set to minimum, Ember can't write the values.
