Type Unicode Characters In Windows 7?
May 3, 2010
How do I type in unicode characters such as "☑"?In XP you could add a "hexnumpad" key to the registry and then type "Alt +2611", but this doesn't seem to be working. I can still type regular ASCII Characters using the numpad, however.

I successfully installed Windows 7 RC 7100 as a second OS in addition to XP Pro. I never had Vista, so this system is totally new to me. My questions:
- I have a problem with a correct codepage for non-unicode characters in russian language. In XP there was a special setting that allowed to select the proper language to show non-unicode characters under Regional settings. Will russian LIP or MUI solve this ? BTW, whats the difference between them? If I prefer to have english menus, what do I need to get?
- I installed Windows 7 to the separate drive. During installation I had some known problems with my bad memory sticks and had a BSOD. I changed them and Windows 7 was installed successfully. Now I have to change boot sequence in BIOS to switch between XP and Windows 7. Is it a way to edit boot.ini on XP to include Windows 7?

For some reason Windows 7 (Home Premium, 64-bit) has recently stopped displaying Unicode characters correctly. I know its a Windows issue, not specific to a certain program, because the problem appears on Asian characters and symbols like the stars in my song ratings across various programs like foobar2000, Mp3Tag, and iTunes. I don't think they work anywhere; I just happen to notice their absences (replaced by ugly square placeholders) in my media-related programs. One interesting thing is that restoring my default font settings via Control Panel appears to fix the problem every other time I restart (ie, I might be able to get Unicode working correctly if I always restore the default font settings before restarting or rebooting my PC - but that is heinously annoying).
The only possible cause I can think of is that I have had some programs to modify the Windows UI such as GDI++ to make the fonts Mac-like (decided ClearType was better rather quickly :P) and pieces of Stardock's suite including programs like WindowsBlinds, IconPackager, etc. I somewhat recently uninstalled all of them, but I didn't notice the problem right away, so I am not sure if they have anything to do with it.

When I type in Word 2010, frequently my keyboard will refuse to type. It will type a couple letters and then I have to wait to get it to go on. Then it will type a few more, etc. Another time it will type without an issue.I have changed the battery.

white box floating on his desktop. When you click the box it shows a blinking typing cursor, but doesn't accept anything types.
When right clicking a menu pops up with the following options:
Undo (grey)
Cut (grey)
Copy (grey)
Paste (grey)
Delete (grey)
Select All (grey)
Right to left Reading order
Show Unicode control characters
Insert Unicode control character
Close IME
Reconversion (grey)
I haven't had much time to play with it but I don't see an obvious way to get rid of it and the box just appeared over the weekend.

I have an asian, non-unicode program on my computer and whenever I run it, all the asian characters display as little boxes I checked the internet and I got suggestions to change my system local to the language I was trying to display. After I did so, the program displayed the characters completely, but some of my other programs on my computer displays ONLY in that language (Since it reads the settings from system local)Is there a way I can display the language with an English system local?

How do I get rid of the .1 and .2 so they become normal JPG photo files?I can look at them with Windows Photo Viewer but I can't figure out how to convert them to normal JPG files.

I recently reformatted my PC and have noticed that areas which properly supported Unicode beforehand no longer do. For example, although Unicode text shows correctly in the majority of Windows Explorer, when I right click on files to view the properties the text field that shows the file name isn't rendering it correctly. This also propagates into some parts of other applications which previously had Unicode support, such as Winamp. I have a vast collection of East Asian music so this is more than a minor inconvenience for me.
Please find the below screen shots to demonstrate what I am seeing: For comparison, here is the same file being displayed properly on my Laptop:

I had to change system locale for non-unicode programs from Slovak to Russian, because of some problems with legacy software. Later, I have switched back to Slovak. I have rebooted and everything seemed to be fine, but ... I've noticed, that slovak/czech programs do not work properly and still using Russian codepage even if windows is showing that current locale for non-unicode program is set to Slovak.Re-setting of this option did not work, so I've downloaded some diagnostic tools and it shows: [code] So my question is: how can I change EBCDIC code page in windows 7 (for example in registry)? Or how can I reset all these settings to windows default?

I am puzzled by how to search for special characters in W7. I have some files that start with the Greek letter t I don't seem to find a way to make WS recognize characters like these for searches. When I type get no results at all. I have already tried with the advanced query filename:without getting any results. When I use Total Commander for searching for et all the results I am looking for, and I know that all these files are included in the Windows Search Index because they can be found if using some other parts of the file name, like for example searching for torrent it finds files with the name torrent.

Everything worked great (all same hardware) until I changed from win 7 32bit to 64bit. In normal windows everything is fine, but in Java and Silverlight/WPF programs (including VS2010 and logmein) "sometimes" typing letters will enter numbers in sequence. That is, I type "hello" and "01234" go into the file. But not all the time.I installed latest drivers and tried another keyboard. Same result

Windows 7, won't accept a password I set to it for my HP 620, though with a special character; which goes for Kar's1990 --that's the password. Password that used to work flawlessly in weeks I have had it in use though until today after coming back from my morning routine, to boot the system, to find out every time I try to write "'" to complete the password properly, it instead adds another black dot to the input field in which case the form ends like: Kar'as1990 instead.
The keyboard isn't Spanish though configured, to international English, so to give me the special character without a problem. To throw as well, I had some virus attack yesterday; but swept them immediately. Nevertheless, I don't know if that have something to do with the keyboard no properly writing the a with the accent I'm seeking it to input.

We purchased a HP Pavilion p6242f Desktop with Windows 7 in late December 2009. The computer was set up by the store tech who among other things downloaded and installed Window Live Mail now that Outook Express is no more.We are having persistent problems with the keyboard in Live Mail only. If you enclose certain characters in ( ) or " ", you get stupid emoticons or strange letters with peculiar accent marks. The tech came back and checked: the language is set to English/US Canada. He couldn't find the cause. I have read a similar complaint on Microsoft's Vista Forum but didn't see a solution. This is a brand-new computer: why is this happening?

Usually, I can see Asian characters (specifically Chinese and Japanese) perfectly fine, but since the last time I restarted my computer none of them are showing up. They don't show in foobar2000 (a music player) either, unless I switch the font to Meiryo (a Chinese font). They used to show up with no problem.
They still show up in Chrome.

Ripping CD's - Lately I've been having a problem with WMP giving some track titles in Japanese characters instead of English - what's going on? How can I stop this?? Is there some setting? Now it seems to have changed a lot of titles in the library.
(FWIW it may have begun when I ripped a Japanese music CD, which appeared in WMP in characters.)

I'm using Windows 7 64bit Professional. It's configured for English and the System Local for non-Unicode is English (RP Philippines).I've been able to copy and past Chinese characters from Word --> Notepad -->Chrome/Firefox/IE for work (I was localizing a website) with no problems until last night. Today, when I tried to copy-paste a few chinese characters from Word, I was suddenly only seeing square boxes. I know this means that the font or app can't recognize or render the characters. My questions is WHY? and how to Fix it? It frustrates me since it was fine yesterday. I haven't installed anything new or changed any setting that I know of. Other applications still render the characters just fine. In fact, if I copy-paste a Chinese character from word to notepad (making a square), then copy the square from Notepad to Chrome, I get the Chinese character back rendered perfectly.
The only change would be a windows update KB915597 that automatically installed last night. To add insult to injury, whenever I go to Windows Update to look at my optional updates and try to search for the Chinese (simplified) LIP, it's not displayed! Even when I click "restore hidden updates". I've even tried the Windows Update Reset regkey, which deleted my Windows Update history, but the LIP's are still not there.

I have a user with a PP presentation that shows Asian characters for the bullets. I changed them using the Bullets and Numbering menu.
However, we kept two copies of the PP presentation (this is a default company profile PP template)...and when the presentation is viewed under XP the Asian characters appear as normal bullets...but under Windows 7x64 they remain Asian.
Has anyone seen this before? Is there something we may have done in the original template that is making it different under each OS?
