If you remove a folder feom the Windows Explorer taskbar jump list, the folder never appears in the list again. That indicates there must be a file that remembers the names of the folders removed. I want to permit folders I previously removed to appear in the jump list again.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Win 7 64 and I have created a vbscript file to launch Windows Media Centre - the script tweaks the registry settings for WMC window size and position (so it always opens in the same position and size on my second montor) before shelling to WMC (which also includes command line swtches to open in the TV Guide).The trouble is that I have created a shortcut to the vbscript file and put it into the start menu - but when I right click on it, it doesn't give me the option to pin it to the task bar. If, however, I edit target for the original WMC shortcut to point to the vbscript then I can pin it. Interestingly, when I do it this way, the Jump List on the pinned shortcut on the taskbar still retains the WMC Jump List which is great(although the Jump List doesn't appear to work on the Start Menu shortcut).So the question is - is there any detailed information that someone can point me at to help me understand how the shortcuts, pinning and jump lists work? Specific questions are:- How does Win 7 tell the difference between the short cut I created for the vbscript file and the "standard" shortcut for WMC?- Why does the pin-to option not appear on the vbscript shortcut?- Can I programmatically, or manually, add shortcuts to the "pinned" area on the task bar?- What controls the Jump List and can it be customised?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just put in a new second hard drive, but my machine won't start into windows anymore (win7 64-bit sp1). I just have a black screen after boot with a blinking cursor top left corner and the HD led on the pc is on permanently. So I decided to pop in the installation dvd and was able to get into recovery environment. Launched the command window and diskpart, but DP lists no drives or volumes.
When I take the new disk out, the system boots up normally. I can see where this is going, so is there anyway to use the recovery environment to scan the drive for errors? Chkdsk doesn't work cos no drives are present, supposedly. Can I manually mount a drive? Unfortunately I don't have an external hdd dock to stick the drive in.
I just got my laptop back from Acer and they had given me a new hard drive. I restored a disk image backup that I had made from Acronis True Image. The backup seemed a little strange going in, but none the less it worked anyway. I then went to Disk Management to look at the setup and noticed that my primary partition is now listed as a Logical. I'm posting a screen shot of the partions and someone tell me if that looks right to them and if not how do I get my C drive back to Primary. As I said it boots ok but when I did the recovery with Acronis it didn't seem to go as smoothly as it should have.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy grandson is using my HP laptop, with Windows 7 64 bit. I am trying to set up Parental Controls and have set up a standard user account for him. However, there is no pane for the User Controls when I click on his account in Control Panel>User Accounts and Family Safety>Parental Controls, it tries to set up Windows Family Safety instead (and fails). I presume I need to set up parental controls first, so does anyone know how I can make it access the User Controls? I can't find any help, especially not on Microsoft sites which merely presume that you can access the controls.
View 8 Replies View Relatedi thought upgrading to 7 would take care of it, but it carried over to the new operating system. here's the 2 problems i have, and i believe they are tied together or i wouldnt mention the browser one. volume control. at completely random times, the volume controller will just take over and turn itself all the way down or all the way up. any attempt by me to move it it just resets, if i slide the bar to the top it'll slide it back to the bottom, and vice versa. more often than not it turns the sound down. but once in a while it maxes my volume. the only way i can regain control of the sound is to reboot. i only mention this cuz it happens simultaneously with the sound problem so im pretty sure they're related. my browser will act normally until the problem kicks in, then it acts as if someone is hitting the "back button" and holding it down. i cant go forward a page, i cant open a web page, i cant do anything, it stays on my homepage forever. you can see it try to go to a new page but then poof its back on the home page. this makes browsing or using the internet impossible.

Then I turn the machine on. After POST, I see the message "Press any key to boot from CD" and it continues. OK - that's normal
Now - let's do this: I copy the image of the bootable CD onto a flash drive. I then set the computer to "Boot from USB Flash drive" first. I install the flash drive. I turn the machine on. I never see the message "Press any key to boot from CD".
The computer's BIOS has several choices of "boot from flash drive" Which one do I choose? Question: Do I have to format the flash as a bootable? Is a simple "copy all" from a factory installation disk sufficient? Should I use a "clone' program to prepare the flash drive?

Shortly after, I made the standard account an administrative account and put parental controls time limit options on my old original administrative account. I changed my mind shortly after this, and as I remember I deleted the standard account, and turned off parental controls on my original account.The next day, I come back home and I can't login because of parental controls. This is the only user account on the computer, and it is a full administrative account. How do I turn this off without having the ability to even get on window's itself? 1. your current security settings prohibit running activex controls on this page, or
2. you have blocked a publisher of one of the controls.as a result, the page may not display correctly.
The warning pop-up opens only when I click on Extended tab.The problem has nothing to do with IE security, because I can open pages with ActiveX controls on them and so.I have installed Spybot spyware/malware removal tool. Then uninstalled it.I'm not sure if this is the cause of the problem. But I presume it is.
I have parental controls set up to lock my son's user account after a certain time of day. the trouble is, when he's on the computer, then leaves, and I come in later, his profile is locked but not logged out. I can't get in to his profile to log him out, of course, unless I disable the parental controls first. How can I force another user to log out from my profile?

I have been hiding the sound control on the taskbar, but they still adjust it.I would like to be able to lock the sound control so they do not have access to it in any way.I am OK if it basically locks it down, I just want to make sure the kids have full access to the internet as needed, the programs they require and the ability to save as needed.

Certain features such as closing an application's windows or unpinning a program from the Start Menu/Taskbar works, however. I've tried various solutions, such as clearing the %APPDATA%MicrosoftWindowsRecentAutomaticDestinations folder and pinning/unpinning programs from the Start Menu/Taskbar. I also tried the solution posted here: Jump List tasks not working. Nothing works.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using 64-bit Windows 7 and 32-bit Microsoft Office. For a long time I had noticed that the jump list for Excel was not updating in the Start menu. After a lot of research I have made sure that the settings have been made for the lists to actually show, and set the number of documents to show. Jump lists update fine for Word. The internal recent documents in Excel update fine too. However, "Recent documents" in the Start menu doesn't update for Excel files. I have also gone to the various locations recommended and deleted the files to clear the jump lists. That did the job of clearing the lists, but whereas Word, for example, has built up its list again, Excel is still showing nothing. I am opening Excel from the Start menu usually, and it makes no difference whether I open a file from a shortcut, double-click in Explorer or from within Excel, the file never appears in the jump list.

The only problem is when the last explorer window closes all of the pinned folders are gone. I found a thread on here and it had a link to a microsoft update download but the genunine windows tool won't work, it says its outdated but I can't find a new version. So my question is does anybody have any other advice an how I can fix this problem. After I reboot I wont see any recent flies either. I really like this function but it is disappointing that I can't use it.
