I'm far from a computer expert, other than games I don't know much at all.I was trying to get a file for a game to work so I turned to google for help, It looks like I've gone onto something I shouldn't have. The instruction on the website was to click start and type "Shell32.dll" into the search box.The next instruction was to open it with Notepad, which I did... The box saying something like "always open using this program" was ticked. After spending time googling what I'd just done it seems like that was a huge mistake, I have no idea how to change it back to its original state. So far everything seems to be fine but from what I read on another site the shell32.dll file has something to do
all my desktop icons has been changed to notepad. i cant find proper solution inany of the websites. if i have downloaded any program it also changed to notepad if i open. i cant work with my system.
I right click a file then click on "open with" then accidentally click notepad. What happen now is, the icons of my other files change to notepad and cannot open. The files now have a file extension of .lnk. My question is how can I restore my file back to its original or default form.
I recently installed a theme that made me change files such as shell32.dll and explorer. dll. Unfortunately, the theme is now messing with things such as Microsoft Word (Page colour is always grey instead of white) and a calender organization software. I'll show a picture of what I mean: Other than this, everything seems to look good, but this program doesn't have themes you can change. So basically is there a chance I can use an original shell32.dll files for example and have this organizer program use those files, while everything else uses the custom shell32.dll?.
I have XP x86, Vista x86, and Windows 7 x64 systems on different PCs. I use the icons frequently to customize folder icons; and I noticed that the SHELL32.dll and imageres.dll in Windows 7 have less a variety of icons (that I like personally) than does the Vista and XP O/Ss. Can I copy the Vista file: C:Windowssystem32SHELL32.dll to a scratchpad, change the name to SHELL32-V.dll and then copy it into the Windows 7 system32 folder as: C:Windowssystem32SHELL32-V.dll ? Since I predominantly use my Windows 7 machines, I can then utilize more folder icons from the Vista/XP platforms on my Windows 7 computer folders when I go to the folder properties/customize panel tab. Will it work? Im NOT a techie.
I need a clean Shell32.dll file for Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (English)
While using IconPackager an error occured and left my icons in disarray. Yes, I know what I'm doing; No, SFC didn't fix it; No, I don't wish to do a repair install.
3 hours of frustration later, I cannot find one reliable download for this file anywhere.
During an attempt to install a custom theme, I needed to replace explorer.exe, shell32.dll and a couple of other files. I used the reg hack to take ownership of these files.I managed to change explorer.exe to explorerBACKUP.exe and insert the modified explorer.exe file......However, when it comes to shell32.dll in the system32 folder, I can rename it to shell32BACKUP.dll, but when I try to drag the replacement shell32.dll file into the system32 folder, I click OK on all the permission requests, a window pops up saying it is copying the file there, but the replacement file does not appear in the system32 folder. Also, having realised it won't let me replace the file, I tried to rename shell32BACKUP.dll to shell32.dll but it won't let me! It appears to work, i.e. no errors, but the name does not change. The same thing happens on one of the other files I have to replace (i forget the name of it now) which is also in the system32 folder. what I need to do to replace the shell32.dll file?I'm running Windows 7 home Premium 64 bit.
Dont ask me how, but I ended up installing Windows7 twice on two seperate partitions. I now have two "Windows 7" options when my boot screen comes up. I obviously only ment to install it once so I want to get rid of the second Windows 7 option on the boot screen (and the bootscreen itself aswell actually).
How do I remove the Windows7 installation thats on partition "D"?
I thought I was deleting a guest acct. but it deleted admin. acct... now I can't load any programs etc. how do I get the admin. acct. back ... I've tried all the stuff I read in earlier posts but they don't work
While struggling to get rid of the win7 security 2012 virus I believe I accidentally deleted a registry key that had to do with my internet instead of one of the ones for the virus. I am not very tech savvy but I can navigate around a computer fairly well with the right guidance. I did not make a copy of the registry keys before attempting to edit them, and for some reason I have no restore dates before I made this mistake to use system restore. Now whenever I open my internet browser (internet explorer 8) I receive a: internet explorer cannot display this webpage. I have connectivity with my router but limited access. I tried trouble shooting and got a message saying there was an error with the DNS. Possibly just a list of what registry keys could possibly cause just my internet to go down. If I can find out which one I deleted I should be able to manually type it in.
I have a Lenovo z360 laptop that runs Windows 7 Home Premium x86 on an Intel core i3 processor. When I turned it on last Friday, the Windows logo showed for around 5 minutes then the BSOD flashes. Technical information:UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME 0x000000ED (0x87E0D798, 0xC0000183). I put in a repair disk and chose to use cmd so that I can chkdsk /r C:. After it successfully checked, I decided to also chkdsk D: so I wouldn't need to go past the recovery options menu again. It took around 5 hours before my maid unplugged it while cleaning, so it died while I was eating. I charged it somewhere else when my brother discharged it to use the desktop computer. He said that it said "Deleting index entry from index $0 of ... 25" when it died again. When I booted it again, it still shows the windows logo for 5 minutes but restarts with no blue screen
I just bought a cheap laptop from Walmart yesterday with windows 7. I am not a fan of it so I wanted to see if I could dual boot windows xp. Luckly it is a IDE machine not sata. So I Downloaded a copy of windows xp (I have a license key for all the people who would shun me for it, it is paid for). Well when I was making a new partition to install windows xp on I set the new partition to active, rebooted and wala, my computer won't boot because I'm a bone head sometimes. I have access to another windows 7 comp that is Extremly slow and I put emphasis on Extremly
why I wouldn't be able to save a .txt or an 'all files' document in Notepad? I don't get any errors or anything, just no response when I hit the 'save' button. I'm running a Dell Inspiron laptop, about seven months old and have all the latest service packs and such.
I just got Windows 7 recently. Was trying to open an old .txt file and the file could only be viewed as the tiny thumbnail at the bottom. My glasses may need to be changed but I don't think anyone can read that small!! You can visually see notepad opening a new window and flying to the right edge of the screen as it maximizes and completely disappears
Can locate the required Logitech folder OK and open and examine the 10 .xml files for the various controllers OK.However when I try this within Notepad, can only get as far as the Logitech Folder. If the Folder is highlighted with the cursor all 10 files are listed. If I try to open the files, get the message ...No items match your search....Not sure how to open so that I can edit?
